    Exploring the environmental Phillips Curve: How do globalization, economic growth, and institutional quality shape load capacity factors in highly globalized European countries?

    This study examines the Environmental Phillips Curve (EPC) hypothesis by analyzing the relationship between the unemployment rate (UR) and Load Capacity Factor (LCF) in the 10 most globalized European countries from 1996 to 2022. Using modern econometric methods, including the STIRPAT model and CS-ARDL, the study assesses the effects of economic growth (GDP), energy consumption (PEC), institutional quality (INQ), and globalization (KOF) on environmental sustainability. The findings robustly support the EPC hypothesis, showing that higher unemployment rates positively impact LCF, enhancing environmental quality. This effect is most evident in highly globalized nations like Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland, where decreased economic activity lowers environmental pressures. The results also reveal that economic growth negatively impacts LCF long-term, emphasizing sustainable development needs. While energy consumption degrades the environment, institutional quality and globalization contribute positively to sustainability. A unique aspect of this study is the interaction term UR∗INQ, demonstrating that institutional quality moderates the UR-LCF relationship, further validating the EPC hypothesis. These insights underscore the importance of integrated strategies for economic and environmental goals in globalized European countries

    Double J Stents: A Nightmare for Some, A Trouble Only When Ignored for Others

    BACKGROUND: Ureteroscopic lithotripsy for renal or ureteral stones is a standard technique performed by every urologist. Double J (DJ) stents are a part of this surgery. This study investigated how patients' compliance affects the time of DJ stent removal. METHODS: The cases of patients aged 20-80 years old who underwent transurethral ureteroscopic lithotripsy were reviewed. The duration of postoperative DJ stent retention was set as 21-28 days in all cases, and a duration of 14-35 days indicated compliance. Short durations signified intolerance, and long durations were considered negligence. The age, gender, stone side, level and size, and educational level and behaviours regarding stent removal of the patients were compared. RESULTS: A total of 146 patients were included. The duration of DJ stent retention ranged from two days to 152 days (mean 36.6 days). Amongst the patients, 66 were compliant with the recommended removal time of 28 ± 7 days, whereas 80 were noncompliant. The mean age of the group unable to tolerate stents was significantly lower (p = 0.032) that those of other groups. When the patients were divided into two groups on the basis of educational level (low and high), a significant relationship was observed between compliance with stent removal timing and educational level (p = 0.036). CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative planning is critical for young patients. This study demonstrated that a significant number of patients are unaware of the timing for DJ stent removal. Educational status, in particular, should be taken into consideration. Various measures, such as mobile phone applications, reminder short message service (SMS) messages and record-keeping systems, can help prevent complications caused by forgotten stents

    The effect of increasing canola oil and soybean oil addition to beef cattle rations based on corn silage and barley grain on the in vitro ruminal gas production and rumen fermentation

    The purpose of the current experiment was to determine the effects of ruminal fermentation parameters of the additions of canola or soybean oils at different rates (4, 8 and 12%) to beef cattle total mix rations (TMR), based on corn silage and barley grain. The addition of 4% soybean oil to TMR positively affected in vitro gas production, net energy lactation (NEL), metabolic energy (ME), and organic matter digestion (OMd). The additions of 8% and 12% of soybean oil to TMR linearly decreased ME, NEL and OMd (p < 0.05). The additions of 4, 8 and 12% canola oil to the TMR linearly decreased the in vitro gas production and estimated fermentation values (ME, NEL and OMd) (p < 0.05). All doses of soybean or canola oils in TMR reduced the molarities of total short-chain fatty acids (tSFCA), acetic (AA), butyric (BA), propionic (PA), valeric (VA), iso-valeric (IVA) and iso-butyric acids (IBA) for in vitro fermentation fluid (p < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between the increasing dietary stearic, oleic and linoleic acid and the end-products of in vitro rumen fermentation. However, increasing dietary α-linolenic acids had no adverse effect on in vitro ruminal fermentation end-products. As a result, 4% addition of the soybean oil, which included a higher rate of α-linolenic acid and saturated fatty acids and a lower rate of oleic, linoleic acids according to those of canola oil, to the TMR positively affected in vitro ruminal fermentation. In addition, the ≥8% addition of canola or soybean oil adversely affected the in vitro fermentation values

    A critical and comprehensive review of the removal of thorium ions from wastewater: Advances and future perspectives

    This review article critically evaluates recent developments in removing thorium (Th) ions from wastewater and discusses future perspectives. Moreover, it is imperative to develop effective and sustainable techniques for removing Th due to the significant environmental and health risks its contamination produces. This review is done to understand the recent technologies and strategies developed for the removal of Th ions from wastewater and to evaluate their efficiency, feasibility, and environmental friendliness. Removal of Th ions from wastewater is an urgent issue due to the radiotoxicity and chemical toxicity of Th. This review may facilitate a broad understanding of the advances in various methods used for the removal of thorium ions through adsorption, ion exchange, membrane technologies, and bioremediation. Again, the article tries to spotlight the problems or gray areas associated with the different techniques developed so far, thereby suggesting scopes for future research and improvement. It is hoped that this review can successfully guide the development of new and more powerful approaches to mitigating Th contamination in wastewater by synthesizing leading-edge research findings and advances for better environmental protection and public health safety. It is of critical importance to protect the environment and human health from the toxic effects of radioactive thorium mixed into life-threatening wastewater. Because a clean environment means a more livable world left to future generations

    Effect of Bortezomib, Daptomycin and Their Combination on Antiproliferation in U266 Multiple Myeloma Cell Line

    Multiple myeloma is the second most common hematological malignancy in adults. Although current treatment approaches extend survival to 6 to 10 years in multiple myeloma treatment, most patients relapse. This situation has led to the need for new therapeutic agents in the treatment of multiple myeloma. Daptomycin, a drug molecule isolated from Streotomyces roseosporus and used especially in infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, has been shown in recent studies to suppress tumor migration and angiogenesis. Bortezomib is a chemotherapy drug currently used in the treatment of multiple myeloma. In this study, we determined the antiproliferative effect of Bortezomib and Daptomycin applications on the U266 multiple myeloma cell line by % cell viability analysis with the XTT method. In addition, we determined the apoptosis levels of U266 multiple myeloma cell lines by flow cytometry. In conclusion, we determined that the combined application of Bortezomib and Daptomycin increased the anticancer effect of Bortezomib alone in U266 multiple myeloma cell lines. In light of the data obtained from this study, we can say that the effect of Daptomycin added to Bortezomib in the treatment of multiple myeloma may contribute significantly to the treatment of the disease
