    “Hear Me Out, Please…”: The Experience of the Novice Critical Care Nurse When Embarking in the Critical Care Areas

    Introduction: The readiness of novice critical care nurses (NCCN) to perform efficiently has been doubted globally. Studies have reported that novice nurses have issues with their confidence and competence in handling critical patients in ICU. Their lack of confidence and competence may promote more harm to the patient’s condition study aim is to explore the experience of novice critical care nurses when embarking in critical care areas.Methods: This study was carried out using a general qualitative design. Data were collected through an in-depth interview in exploring NCCN experiences, challenges, and needs while working in the critical care setting. They were recruited from a teaching hospital located in East Coast Malaysia. Data were organised and analysed manually using the thematic analysis approach. Finding: A total of 20 participants was recruited for the study. The majority of the participants are Malay, female, and graduated with Diploma in Nursing from Malaysia. The study reported three main themes; (1) Handling complex patients (2) Familiarised with the equipment and environment, and (3) Mixed feelings during the transition. Themes revealed in the study have proposed that NCCN is eager for support when embarking in the areas.Conclusion: Acknowledge the struggle faced by the NCCN may seem small to others. But it can free up some space in their mind to continue the growth expected and needed from them. Therefore, it could be beneficial to the health setting and patients’ care

    Attitudes and Beliefs of Nursing Students Towards Sexual Health Care

    Introduction: Sexual health care refers to assessing sexual health, identifying the risks, and providing appropriate counselling related to sexuality. It is essential to have competency related to this care to prevent under-treated patient and further complications. This study aims to explore attitudes and beliefs among undergraduate nursing students at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Kuantan, Pahang toward sexual health care and its association with socio-demographic characteristics. Methods: A descriptive quantitative cross-sectional study with a convenience sampling was conducted among 239 students from March to May 2021. Data were gathered by using Google Forms questionnaires and distributed to all undergraduate nursing students through WhatsApp. The questionnaires were available in three parts: socio-demographic, students’ characteristics, and Sexual Attitude and Belief Survey (SABS). Data analysis was done by using SPSS version 20.0. Results: The majority of nursing students have moderate attitudes and beliefs in delivering sexual health care and Age group was significantly associated with SABS score (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although most nursing students have sufficient knowledge related to sexual health, they still feel uncomfortable and unable to diagnose patients with sexual problems

    Knowledge Level on Breast Cancer and Breast Self-Examination (BSE) Practice Among Female University Students

    Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in Malaysia and therefore, it is important to recognize the early signs and symptoms of breast cancer. In addition, breast self?examination (BSE) also has been suggested as a valuable technique for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of knowledge on breast cancer and breast self-examination (BSE); and determine the practice of BSE among female student in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Kuantan, Pahang. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study with stratified random sampling method was conducted among 245 female students in IIUM Kuantan Campus, from April to May 2021. Data were gathered by using Google Forms platform which was available in English Language and were distributed to female undergraduate students. The questionnaire was adapted from three sets of questionnaires, Nimir et al., (2014), Erdem and Toktas (2016) and Tewabe and Mekuria (2019). Data analysis was done by using SPSS version 23.0. Results: Majority of the participants (98.0%) have high knowledge regarding the knowledge on risk factors, signs and symptoms of breast cancer and breast self-examination (BSE). The result also showed that 31.0% participants never performed BSE. Most of them reported that the reasons that they do not perform BSE are due to lack of knowledge (35.1%), forgetfulness (33.9%) and negligence (21.6%). Around 36.3% participants reported that they do not know the technique that use to perform BSE.Conclusion: Participants having high knowledge on breast cancer and BSE; however, the practice of BSE is still lacking. Therefore, BSE need to be more educate and promote its practice among young women for early detection of breast cancer and its prevention

    Knowledge, Awareness and Practice on Dietary Management Among Patients with Urolithiasis: A Scoping Review

    Urolithiasis or kidney stone has strong association with lifestyle. The pattern of recurrent episodes reported is alarming and if left untreated will lead to serious conditions such as cancer or ablative surgical intervention. Therefore, this scoping review was performed to provide an overview on knowledge, awareness and practice (KAP) of dietary management among patients with urolithiasis. Published studies within 2010 until 2020 on KAP among urolithiasis patients globally and Malaysia were searched through five databases including ProQuest Health and Medical Complete, Wiley Online Library, EBSCO Host, Science Direct and Scopus. The quality appraisal was performed using Freestyle Critical Appraisal. Two of the authors involved in screening the relevant literature while the supervisor involved in peer checking the appraisal performed. A total of eight publications; five original studies and three review papers were obtained but none was from Malaysia. Only five were reviewed systematically on the basis of its completeness for quantitative synthesis on design, population, methodology and instrumentation. The scope of interest was awareness of urolithiasis, knowledge on risk factors, sign and symptoms, treatment and preventive measure, as well as the relationship between urolithiasis and socio-demographic background. The findings highlighted an association between socio-demographic background such as age, gender, education level, income status, literacy level towards KAP among urolithiasis patients on dietary management. Lifestyle pattern such as food intake and weight management were crucial to prevent recurrent episode Proper dietary management was an early intervention to prevent recurrent episodes of urolithiasis. Health education efforts may be helpful to increase awareness and knowledge among patients and this need to be performed by multidisciplinary effort

    Knowledge and Attitude of Nursing Students Towards Mentoring Program in Kulliyyah of Nursing, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)

    Introduction: Mentoring is one of the important elements in education as it includes orientation to enhance the tutors’ role, integrating into the education community, teaching and leadership development, scholarship, and service skills. Despite the positive feedbacks and comments on mentoring program, the knowledge and attitude of students towards any problems faced are still unknown or unclear. Thus, this study aims to investigate the knowledge and attitude among nursing students on mentoring program in Kulliyyah of Nursing in IIUM Kuantan. Methods: A quantitative cross- sectional study with convenience sampling was conducted on 188 undergraduate nursing students between October to December 2020. Data were collected via online platform (google form) invited through WhatsApp or email. The questionnaires consist of sociodemographic profile, knowledge, and attitude towards mentoring program. Results: Most students age between 22 to 23 years old (59.5%). Students mainly perceived good knowledge and positive attitude towards mentoring program. There were no association seen between sociodemographic profile and knowledge towards mentoring program (gender p=0.120; age p=0.165; year of study p=0.188) and attitude to mentoring program (gender p=0.241; age p=0.442; year of study p=0.720). However, there was a correlation between knowledge and attitude of nursing students towards mentoring program in Kulliyyah of Nursing (p<0.05). Conclusion: The study revealed there were no effect of sociodemographic profile on knowledge and attitude, however demonstrated of association between their knowledge and attitudes to mentoring program. Thus, the study basically showed that by having a good knowledge on the program, they will tend to have good attitudes and involved in the program accordingly. This finding further implied that more awareness on mentoring program should be executed to boost the student knowledge and attitude. Further research should be explored to look onto students’ needs and how to assist the student through mentoring

    Development and Validation of the Islamic-based Smoking Cessation Program Module for Young Adults

    Abstract Objective: This study aims to develop and validate the new Islamic-based Smoking Cessation Program (ISCP) for undergraduate male smokers. Methods: The development of the intervention was based on the Intervention Mapping (IM) Protocol, where basic health education program planning activities involved four main steps which are; conducting a needs and capacity assessment of the program, developing the program, formative evaluation including; validating and implementing the program. A content validity level (CVL) was used to assess the content validity quantitatively, with a CVL of more than 70% being considered appropriate. Results: The module was found to have a high level of authenticity (content validity level = 79%). Revision and modification were completed based on the expert panel comments and suggestions to improve the module. Conclusion: The ISCP module has good content validity and can be used to assist undergraduate smokers in their cessation journey.

    Self-Rated Health, Demographic Factors and Depressive Symptoms Among Malaysian Adults

    Introduction: Depression risk has been significantly associated with sociodemographic aspects such as education levels and self-rated health.  The aim was to investigate the relationship of socio-demographic characteristics particularly level of education, and self-rated health on depressive symptoms among Malaysian adults.  Methods: This is a cross-sectional study among Malaysians who aged 16 to 52 years old. Respondents were recruited via social media, using convenience sampling. Sociodemographic questions include education levels and self-rated health among other questions. Depressive symptoms were measured using Beck Depression Inventory-II, Malay version. The data were analysed using Chi- Square Test. Two-Way of ANOVA was utilized to determine the association of education levels and self-rated health on depressive symptoms. Results: Chi-Square indicated that age, level of education, job categories and self-rated health had a significant relationship at p<0.05 with key variables used in this study, presence, and absence of depressive symptoms except for gender, race and marital status. Two-way of ANOVA results revealed a significant interaction between self-rated health, level of education and depressive symptoms (F = 2.711,df=5,p<0.05). Conclusion: Malaysian individuals with low education levels showed depressive symptoms and showed a significant association with low self-rated health, however some of them rated themselves as healthy.  Therefore, the government needs to make health literacy a priority for everyone, particularly for those with low levels of education and individuals who perceived themselves as mentally healthy

    Overwhelming Yet Striving; The Story of IIUM Medical Students.

    Introduction: Medicine is known to be tough and requires more than just intelligence. The implementation of other courses was deemed necessary to equip medical students with emotional intelligence, problem-solving and soft skills. However, their perception of their study plan and its relation to their grade has yet to be explored. This study aimed to assess the association between the grade and perception of the study plan among the pre-clinical medical students.    Methods: A 47 items self-administered questionnaire was distributed to Year 2 students (n = 137) in Kulliyyah of Medicine, International Islamic University Malaysia. The questionnaire included their study plan implementation, comprising of medical and non-medical courses, and how they perceived it. We obtained their official assessment results from the academic office. Results: Eighty four percent (n = 115) students responded. Most students spent 22 hours/week for medical courses self-study and assignments, and 18 hours/week studying and completing non-medical courses assignments after hours. Seventy percent (n = 80) felt that their schedule is overwhelming. Only 11 failed (9.6%) the medical course, and three failed other courses at least once. There was no difference in the grade regardless of feeling overwhelmed or not (p = 0.65). Conclusion: Despite the overwhelming study plan, the proportion of failure was relatively low. While this could indicate some degree of resilience in the medical students, precaution is necessary to safeguard their physical and mental wellbeing and prevent burnout

    Knowledge on Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) and Practice of COVID-19 Prevention Among Students in the Health Campus

    Introduction: Knowledge of COVID-19 and the practices towards the prevention of COVID-19 are crucial especially among health sciences students who are required to do a clinical placement at a hospital. This study aimed to assess the knowledge on COVID-19 and practice of COVID-19 prevention among university students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted via a web-based survey. A total of 273 students of the medical, dental and health sciences programs were invited to participate in this study using stratified random sampling methods. A set of questionnaires developed by WHO training material for identification, prevention, response, and control of COVID-19 was used. Results: Most of the respondents were fourth year students (37.4%) age of 22 years old. The mean of total knowledge score was 23.14 ± 1.50. The overall mean score for the practice towards prevention of COVID-19 was 30.06 ± 3.03. The findings revealed that 71.1% students had good knowledge while 28.9% of them had poor knowledge regarding COVID-19.  Half (58.6%) of the students have good practice and 41.4% had poor practice of COVID-19 prevention. There is no significant correlation of knowledge on COVID-19 and the practice of COVID-19 prevention. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the need for continuous education and a regular reminder to the student population involved in the clinical area regarding infectious disease prevention
