    Get PDF
Background: Smoking has been primarily studied as a public health problem involving mapping continued smoking patterns and interventions designed to decrease smoking prevalence. This paper aims to discuss the available literature on smokers’ perception on their health, the smokers’ health-seeking behaviour and factors influence the smokers’ continuity in smoking. Method: Review literature conducted by using databases such as Science Direct, Sage Journals, Wiley, PubMed, and Scopus with the keywords smoking, health perception, health seeking behavior, health status, and health screening. Result: Eighteen articles were reviewed, selected, and summarized. These include six qualitative studies, ten quantitative studies, and two randomized control studies. Findings showed that smokers underestimate the effects of smoking and overestimate their ability to quit before becoming addicted. Thus, communication of health risk must be in line with smokers’ perception of health risks which they tend to minimize and ignore. Smokers’ perceived smoking bring benefits and they could retain control over their actions but could not easily stop having frequent desires to smoke. Also, healthcare providers should develop passion, equipped with expected skills and aid while intervene smokers’, which might increase their motivation to quit smoking. Conclusion: Further study perhaps could bring a better understanding on the factors contribute to smokers’ judgment in making decisions whether to continue or stop smoking and how these factors influence their actions. Smoking rates might be reduced if smokers understood the risks of smoking, which were more accurate as evidenced by a medical check-up and held to the beliefs on smoking-related risks that led to their firm decision to stop smoking.

    Get PDF
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is often associated with Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission and results in a higher mortality rate around the world. The AKI cases have been rising for the past decade alongside the mortality rate. Literature has shown that early detection helps in overcoming the problem. This systematic review aims to identify the identify the relevant literature and to summarize the prevention and early detection of AKI in the ICU setting to reduce the morbidity and mortality rate of patients. A total of 20 articles identified in this review. This systematic review also is in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Relevant studies were identified based on the inclusion criteria with language filters but were limited to articles published from the year 2010 to 2020. Two reviewers independently conducted the quality assessment, data extraction, and analysis on all included studies. The result indicates there are several biomarkers which are helpful in detecting AKI such as Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL), Interleukin-18 (IL-18), Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase 2 (TIMP-2), Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Protein 7 (IGFBP-7), Protein C (PC), and soluble thrombomodulin (sTM). This review also addressed nursing responsibilities for early detection and prevention of AKI. Thus, severe cases of AKI and mortality cases associated with AKI can be minimized with better predictive and proper management

The aims of this study were to investigate the awareness, knowledge and practicality of solat for sick Muslim patients when they hospitalised. Methods: A cross sectional study involving 160 patients was conducted between 18th July 2013 and 28th August 2016. A valid, self-administered questionnaire was given to all Muslim patients to assess the awareness, knowledge, and practicality of solat during illness. The questionnaires were distributed to hospitalised Muslim patients from six selected hospitals in Malaysia. Results: All 160 respondents are Muslim and know that solat is obligatory to be perform (100%). The majority of them 129 (80.6%) practice solat five times daily, while 26 (16%) practice it sometimes and five (3.1%) of them never perform it. However, only 103 (64.4%) were still practising solat when they were hospitalised, while 57 (35.6%) did not. More than half (56.9%) said that the pain and illness had limited their daily ritual practice. Overall, 113 (70.6%) of the respondents felt guilty when they unintentionally did not perform solat. Seventy (43.8%) patients said that the facilities in the hospital did not meet their expectations in terms of helping them to perform solat. Conclusion: This study implies that there is a need for measures and interventions to help Muslim people perform solat while hospitalised. We hope that by conducting proper training and upgrading the facilities, the level of awareness and practice can be improved

Introduction: Nursing students with lesser experience and training are likely to react negatively to emotional labour and are at higher risk for deterioration of psychological well-being and increase emotional exhaustion due to accumulated stress. This study aims to determine the level and association between emotional labour and emotional exhaustion among undergraduate nursing students during clinical posting. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate nursing students in a public University in Malaysia using online surveys. The Nurse Emotional Labour Scale (NELS) consist of 15 items and scored the response using the 5-point Likert scale was used to measure the level of emotional labour. Meanwhile, emotional exhaustion was measured using 9 items Emotional Exhaustion subscale of Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results: A total of 155 students (81.3% female and 18.7 % male) responded to the study. The level of emotional labour among nursing students were found to be moderate with a mean score of 20.26 and most students used genuine acting. More students engaged in deep acting (Mean = 11.30) compared to surface acting (Mean = 8.97). A high level of emotional exhaustion was identified in 14.2% of the students. Clinical posting experience and emotional exhaustion were found to be associated. Posting in the operation theatre and labour room leads to emotional exhaustion. There was positive significant association between emotional labour and emotional exhaustion of the students. Conclusion: Overall, it can be concluded that emotional exhaustion during clinical posting is related to emotional labour. Thus, measures in dealing with emotional labour such as effective coping strategies and stress prevention can be encouraged. Close monitoring and support from the clinical teachers should be strengthened so that early assistance can be delivered to the needy students. Also, steps in the arrangement of the clinical posting should be employed to make it student friendly and interesting clinical learning. Further research from the clinical teachers’ perspective should be done so that early assessment of students’ performance or any emotional issues that arise can be monitored and detected early

    Get PDF
Introduction: A common treatment for patients nearing the end of their life expectancy is organ donation and transplantation. Organ donation can cure diseases and save the lives of those who need them. End-stage organ failure patients must have an organ transplant in order to survive and return to a normal life. The most common obstacle to organ donation is finding a donor willing to save other people's lives. Muslims are less likely to donate organs because of a lack of understanding of organ donation activities. To devise a strategy, it is necessary to gain a better understanding of organ donation activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of Kuantan's Muslim population regarding organ donation. Methodology: Based on interviews, this study employs a qualitative approach. An in-depth interview was conducted with eight residents of Kuantan, Pahang, in a semi-structured manner. There was a thematic analysis of the data. Results: Among the topics discussed were understanding organ donation, decision-making factors, the current updates related to organ donation activities in Malaysia, awareness of Islamic guidelines related to organ donation, and a source of information. Conclusion: Due to misunderstanding and anxiety, the willingness to register as a donor is still lacking. As a result of awareness campaigns, family and friends can all positively influence organ donation. The Islamic view on organ donation should be conveyed to the public in an easy-to-understand manner by religious leaders
