The outbreak and global spread of the coronavirus in December 2019 has thrown the global community into a desperate search for an enduring solution to the scourge. To this end, several precautionary measures have been advanced. They included frequent washing of hands, use of face-mask and alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water, and covering of the nose and mouth with a flexed elbow or disposable tissue when coughing and sneezing, among others. For more robust outcomes of these measures, especially among the school-going children in the world, effective guidance and counselling services in the area of adequate orientation, information, and feedback/follow-up services need to be properly entrenched. This paper examined the perceived effects of COVID-19 and the potential impacts of counselling intervention services on the psychological wellbeing of school-going children in Osun State, Nigeria. A total of 400 secondary school students were selected from four schools. Findings revealed that the perceived effect of COVID-19 was higher among females than males and among urban residents than their counterparts in rural areas. The pro-counselling intervention services meant to cushion the effect were almost unavailable. Also, a negative significant relationship was found between perceived psychological effect and pro-counselling intervention services, which seemed to indicate that the lower the pro-counselling intervention services available to students, the more psychological effects and poor mental health they will experience. These findings have important implications for government and stakeholders in secondary education. There is an urgent need to put appropriate measures in place against different waves of COVID-19 across the globe in order to ensure that the safety and psychological wellbeing of secondary school students are not compromised

The most extensively studied second language in the world, English is the language of the global economy. It is crucial to understand whether instructors are sufficiently motivated at different stages of their professional journeys because good teaching is a prerequisite for students' learning. This study aimed at investigating the overall motivation of in-service English language teachers in Malaysia. Employing a quantitative research design, a survey instrument was used to collect data from in-service English teachers who are currently doing their undergraduate degree. They were requested to respond to the items on motivation, which are categorized into two sub-dimensions, intrinsic and extrinsic. The study reveals that Malaysian in-service English teachers are generally motivated to teach English, whereas the motivation comes mostly from the intrinsic aspects. The findings have significant implications on the Malaysian educational policy and system as well as its various professional development programs for teachers generally, and English teachers specifically

English as a Second Language (ESL) learners, especially in rural educational settings, continue to encounter challenges in acquiring fundamental writing skills. One possible factor is the lack of creative and innovative pedagogical approaches tailored to support the learners. In light of this, the present study examined the use of graphic organiser (GO) as a pedagogical tool on writing performance of Malaysian ESL learners. Twenty-seven intermediate students from a secondary school in Malaysia participated in a series of 11 writing sessions using GO in writing descriptive essays. The application of this GO in composing the descriptive writing was carried out throughout the writing lessons consisted of modelling, scaffolding, individual prewriting, drafting with peers and group writing. Using a qualitative study, the data analysis involved content analysis sourced from participants’ essay scripts. Guided by the CEFR framework, 54 descriptive essays were evaluated and analysed to observe changes in writing in terms of content, communicative achievement, language, and organisation. Participants' essays in Writing Task 1 (WT1) and Writing Task 2 (WT2) were compared to observe changes in their writing performances after the implementation of GO in the writing instructions. Results showed that the use of GO in developing descriptive essays has improved learners’ writing in all components. The study has revealed that successful writing requires differentiated and creative graphic organisers, accompanied by systematic writing activities for ESL learners to thrive in a challenging writing classroom

In recent years, the incidence of juvenile delinquency has been increasing, posing a threat to the well-being of families and society. This urges the understanding of the involvement in delinquent behaviours among young male juvenile delinquents. The main objective of this study was to explore juvenile delinquent involvement among former young male juvenile delinquents. A phenomenology qualitative research design was utilised to explore the participants’ lived experiences and their involvement in juvenile delinquency. Eight (8) former young male juvenile delinquents aged 26 years old and below participated in this research. The non-probability sampling technique of snowball sampling was utilised to select the participants. An intake form was administered to obtain the participants’ socio-demographic information. A semi-structured interview questions were used to explore the participants’ involvement in juvenile delinquency. The analysis of the data collected from former young male juvenile delinquents using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) revealed several themes that led to such delinquent behaviours; namely, lucrative business, recidivism, and peer pressure. The results indicate that the participants’ initial involvement was influenced by their social circle or peer group, the challenges of relapse, and the advantages they gained from their unlawful conduct. The analysis of the results helps us determine the need for early intervention in order to prevent the increasing percentage of juvenile delinquency among adolescents in Malaysia

    Get PDF
This paper examined the issue of graduate employability in Malaysia by exploring its theoretical underpinnings, defining key concepts, analysing the levels of employability, and investigating the underlying socio-political-economic aspects of the issue. Other than the Malaysian context, the study also drew insights from international perspectives on the employed theoretical framework, comprising the theories of job market signalling, human capital, and neoliberalism, in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of graduate employability. Then, the study highlights the distinction between employability and employment, while emphasizing the long-term ability of graduates to obtain jobs aligned with their skill sets. It critically analysed the current Graduate Tracer Study (GTS) framework in Malaysia, which primarily focuses on employment status and unable to capture the broader concept of employability, particularly long-term employability. Suggestions were put forward to expand the GTS framework by including industrial insights, addressing the horizontal mismatch of employment and long-term employability. Socio-political-economic issues related to graduate employability, such as minimum wages, income inequalities, and gig work arrangements, were also examined. This was followed by the discussions on the role of the state governments in managing employment and employability issues, along with policy initiatives that are aimed at enhancing job quality and long-term employability. Overall, this paper presents a way forward for improving graduate employability in Malaysia. From the perspective of socio-political-economics, this paper has highlighted the challenges faced by gig workers, including job security and unstable income. In line with these, necessary recommendations were proposed, including graduates' learning skills development, the expansion of existing employability programs, the enhancement of the GTS, improvements in the gig-worker sector, collaboration between academia and industries, as well as promotions of entrepreneurship and innovation
