    Why teachers use Bahasa in the Arabic language classroom?

    The use of the target language has long been considered an important principle of second language (L2) instruction. Previous research has attempted to quantify the amount of the first language (L1) used in the classroom and has explored the purposes or functions of teachers’ ‘lapses’ into their students’ L1. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the attitudes towards using L1 in Arabic classes among teachers of secondary school in Malaysia which consists of students speaking Bahasa as their L1. Data was collected based on the interviews of the teachers that teach Arabic language in a school. The respondents of this study were two experienced teachers. The findings indicated that L1is still used by the teachers to explain difficult concepts of grammar so that students easily understand linguistics terms, and also to translate new words to ensure that students understand unfamiliar words.   Abstrak   Penggunaan bahasa sasaran telah lama dianggap prinsip pengajaran bahasa kedua (L2) yang penting. Kajian terdahulu telah berusaha untuk mengukur kuantiti Bahasa pertama (L1) yang digunakan dalam bilik darjah dan mencari tujuan atau fungsi guru-guru ‘tanpa sedar’ menggunakan bahasa pertama (L1) pelajar.  Tujuan kajian kualitatif ini adalah untuk meneroka sikap guru sekolah menengah di Malaysia terhadap penggunaan L1 dalam kelas Bahasa Arab iaitu pelajar bertutur dalam Bahasa Malaysia sebagai L1.  Data telah diperolehi melalui temubual dengan guru-guru yang mengajar Bahasa Arab di sebuah sekolah. Responden kajian ini adalah dua orang guru yang berpengalaman.  Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa L1 masih digunakan oleh para guru bagi menjelaskan konsep nahu yang sulit supaya pelajar mudah memahami istilah linguistic dan juga bagi menterjemah istilah-istilah baharu bagi memastikan pelajar memahaminya

    Conceptions of Autonomy in Language Learning from a Cultural Perspectives Using Q Methodology

    The adoption of Autonomy in Language Learning (ALL) is claimed to be beneficial to learners learning a second or foreign language. It is asserted that through ALL, learners are able to make better progress and continue to learn and acquire the target language even after the formal learning is over. Nonetheless, the consensus on what ALL entails and its universal applicability is still questioned. There are debates on the possibility of ALL paradigm shifts due to cultural perspectives. In addressing this issue, an investigation of the conception of ALL among Malay trainee teachers of English as a Second Language in Malaysia was carried out. The objective was to explore the participants’ subjective viewpoints of ALL. In an attempt to do this systematically, Q Methodology was chosen. This method allows for the researcher to have insights and identify the participants’ conceptions of ALL. The result showed that the trainee teachers conceptualized interdependence as well as empowerment and flexibility as important in ALL. The finding corroborate with the notion of students constructing knowledge from experience, which may have its basis on cultural background.   Abstrak   Penggunaan Autonomi dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa (ALL) didakwa sebagai amat berfaedah bagi pelajar yang mempelajari bahasa kedua atau bahasa asing.  Ada yang menegaskan bahawa menerusi ALL, pelajar mampu menjadi lebih maju dan terus belajar dan memperolehi bahasa sasaran walaupun selepas tamat pembelajaran formal. Namun demikian, pada umumnya apa yang didokong oleh ALL dan kesejagatan aplikasinya masih dipersoalkan. Wujud perbahasan tentang kemungkinan berlaku anjakan paradigm ALL kerana perspektif budaya.  Untuk menangani isu ini, satu penyelidikan tentang konsepsi ALL dalam kalangan guru pelatih berbangsa Melayu yang mengambil pengkhususan Bahasa Inggeris sebagai Bahasa Kedua di Malaysia telah dilaksanakan.  Objektif penyelidikan adalah untuk meneroka pandangan subjek terhadap ALL.  Dalam usaha untuk menjalankan penyelidikan ini dengan sistematis, Metodologi Q telah dipilih kerana ia membolehkan penyelidik memperoleh pandangan yang mendalam dan mengenalpasti konsepsi subjek mereka tentang ALL.  Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa guru pelatih mengkonsepsikan saling kebergantungan, pemberdayaan dan keluwesan sebagai penting dalam ALL.  Ini konsisten dengan pandangan bahawa pelajar membina ilmu daripada pengalaman mereka yang mungkin bersandarkan latar belakang kebudayaa

    Relationship between Religious Commitment and Career Decision Making Among International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Students

    This study is an exploration of the relationship between religious commitment and career decision making among students at the International Islamic University Malaysia. The sample of this study consisted of two hundred and thirty students. The major hypotheses of the study were that (a) the degree of religious commitment among students in IIUM is high, (b) the students are highly confident in their career decisions; (c) there is a positive correlation between confidence in career decisions and religious commitment. The instruments used were Career Decision Scale (CDS) and Religious Commitment Inventory (RCI). The results found that students of IIUM have a high level of religious commitment and a moderate level of confidence in career decision-making. Multivariate Analysis of Variance showed a significant difference between local and   Abstrak   Kajian ini adalah satu ekplorasi tentang hubungan antara komitmen agama dan pertimbangan pemilihan kerjaya dalam kalangan 230 orang mahasiswa di Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM). Hipotesis utama adalah (a) darjah komitmen agama mahasiswa UIAM adalah tinggi; (b) mahasiswa mempunyai keyakinan yang tinggi dalam pertimbangan kerjaya mereka; (c) terdapat korelasi positif antara keyakinan dalam pertimbangan kerjaya dan komitmen agama.  Instrumen yang digunakan adalah Skala Pertimbangan Kerjaya (CDS) dan Inventori Komitmen Agama (RCI).  Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa mahasiswa UIAM mempunyai komitmen agama bertahap tinggi dan keyakinan dalam membuat pertimbangan pemilihan kerjaya yang sederhana.  Analisis Varian Multivariat menunjukkan perbezaan yang signifikan antara mahasiswa tempatan dan antarabangsa di mana mahasiswa antarabangsa lebih tinggi keyakinan dalam membuat pertimbangan kerjaya. Analisis korelasi statistiks tidak menunjukkan korelasi yang signifikan antara CDS dan RCI seperti yang dijangka oleh hipotesis. Bagaimanapun, hasil kajian menunjukkan hubungan yang signifikan dan positif antara subskala “kepastian kerjaya” dan komitmen agama.  Dapatan ini mempunyai implikasi yang penting bagi kaunselor kerjaya, sebab ia menunjukkan kepentingan komitmen agama dalam kaunseling kerjaya. International students with international students having more confidence in career decision-making. Using statistical analysis of correlation, results did not show any significant relationship between CDS and RCI as was predicted by the hypothesis. However, the results showed a significant, positive relationship between the ‘career certainty’ subscale and religious commitment. These findings have important implications for career counsellors, as they show the importance of religious commitment in career counseling

    This research deals with the experiences and perceptions of Muslim children and adolescents of divorced parents. The study, therefore, focuses on Muslim adolescents who went through the emotional trauma and impact of their parents’ divorce but who have managed to let go of their negative reactions and to learn from the whole experience. Because the participants in this study are Muslims, another aspect that this research has looked into is the extent to which their faith, Islam, acted as a spiritual comfort.   Abstrak   Penyelidikan ini mengkaji pengalaman dan persepsi kanak-kanak dan remaja berugama Islam tentang ibu bapa mereka yang bercerai.  Oleh itu, ia memberi tumpuan kepada remaja Islam yang pernah melalui trauma emosi dan kesan daripada perceraian ibu bapa mereka tetapi berjaya membebaskan diri daripada reaksi negatif dan mengambil iktibar daripada segala yang mereka alami.  Oleh kerana subjek penyelidikan ini berugama Islam, maka satu lagi aspek yang dikaji adalah sejauh manakah agama mereka dapat memberi ketenangan kerohanian

    Exploring Teachers’ Perceptions in Managing Interracial Interactions in a Multicultural setting: A Case study of Five Malaysian Secondary Schools in Klang Valley

    The multicultural school environment at the Malaysian national schools presents a number of issues and challenges for the in-service teachers. This study investigated the experiences of 16 teachers in five selected national type schools in Klang Valley. Through a series of semi-structured interviews, responses from the teachers provided insights to the multiculturalism school environment in a multiracial society such as Malaysia. The findings of this study revealed that low proficiency of the national language among non-Malay students, inadequate multicultural trainings for teachers, and lack of programmes and initiatives that promote unity in a multicultural environment are among the major hurdles faced by teachers. The implications of the findings and recommendations from the teachers on ways to improve the multicultural environment in schools are also presented.   Abstrak   Persekitaran sekolah kebangsaan yang majmuk budaya di Malaysia menampilkan beberapa isu dan cabaran bagi guru-guru dalam perkhidmatan.  Kajian ini menyelidik pengalaman 16 orang guru daripada lima buah sekolah jenis kebangsaan yang dipilih di sekitar Lembah Klang.  Respons daripada para guru melalui satu siri temubual separa berstruktur, memberi maklumat lebih dalam tentang persekitaran sekolah majmuk budaya dalam masyarakat majmuk seperti Malaysia.  Hasil kajian mendapati penguasaan Bahasa kebangsaan yang rendah dalam kalangan pelajar bukan Melayu, kekurangan latihan tentang kemajmukan budaya dalam kalangan guru dan kekurangan program dan inisiatif bagi memajukan perpaduan kaum dalam persekitaran majmuk budaya merupakan beberapa halangan utama yang dihadapi oleh guru. Kertas ini turut membentangkan implikasi bagi dapatan kajian dan mengesyorkan beberapa saranan daripada para guru tentang cara untuk menambahbaik persekitaran majmuk budaya di sekolah.     Make it mean! Using a ‘community of inquiry’ to improve language skills in the esl classroom

    The purpose of the study was to explore ways of making ESL classes more engaging for language learners at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). To this end, an instructional method known as ‘Community of Inquiry' (CI) where students sit in a circle and explain, challenge and justify one another’s opinions, arguments and assertions was combined with specially written ‘thinking stories' containing philosophical issues and elements of relevance to learners' culture. Two such stories were written and taught to a class of intermediate level, ESL learners at IIUM, over a five-week period, using CI method. Qualitative research methodology was utilized to evaluate learners' responses to the method and materials. Data collection instruments included: in-depth interviews, student-diaries, focused-group observation and teacher’s diary entries. The data was subsequently transcribed, analysed and arranged into themes and sub-themes using Nvivo - a qualitative research software. The results of the research showed that CI method, combined with thinking stories, holds great potential for improving all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in a holistic way. For example, speaking and listening were practiced through CI discussions; grammar and vocabulary were learnt in-context using the thinking stories; pronunciation was practiced during read-aloud sessions of the stories and the philosophical issues and questions discussed provided an excellent stimulus for written work. In addition, students' confidence to speak-up in class grew, as did their ability to use critical thinking skills. It appears that combining CI method with thinking stories satisfied learners' cognitive, affective and cultural needs, and this, in turn, helped to increase their intrinsic motivation to study English - an important factor for effective language learning. The paper ends by suggesting ways to improve CI method for future implementations of this new approach to second language learning.   Abstrak   Tujuan kajian ini adalah untuk meneroka cara-cara bagi membuat kelas ESL lebih menarik bagi penuntut Bahasa di Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM). Bagi tujuan ini, sejenis kaedah pembelajaran yang dikenali sebagai “Komuniti Inkuiri” (KI) di mana pelajar duduk dalam satu bulatan dan menjelaskan, mencabar dan mendokong pendapat, hujah dan dakwaan mereka, telah digabungkan dengan cerita-cerita yang ditulis khas berunsur pemikiran yang mengandungi isu falsafah dan unsur-unsur yang relevan kepada budaya penuntut. Dua buah cerita khas telah dikarang dan digunakan dalam sebuah kelas pelajar tahap pertengahan di UIAM bagi tempuh lima minggu menggunakan kaedah KI.  Metodologi kualitatif telah digunakan bagi menilai respons pelajar kepada metode dan bahan mengajar.  Instrumen untuk mengumpul data terdiri daripada temubual mendalam, diari pelajar, pemerhatian kumpulan fokus dan entri daripada diari guru.  Data yang diperolehi telah ditranskripsikan, dianalisa dan disusun mengikut tema dan sub-tema menggunakan Nvivo – satu perisian  bagi kajian kualitatif, Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa kaedah KI bergabung dengan cerita-cerita berunsur pemikiran mempunyai potensi yang amat besar bagi memajukan keempat-empat kemahiran Bahasa (mendengar, bertutur, membaca dan menulis) secara holistic.  Kajian juga mendapati bahawa keyakina pelajar bertutur bertambah, dan juga kemahiran berfikir kritis.  Penggabungan kaedah KI dan cerita khas untuk berfikir memenuhi keperluan kognitif, afektif dan budaya pelajar, yang akhirnya meningkatkan motivasi intrinsic untuk belajar Bahasa Inggeris.  Kertas ini diakhiri dengan cadangan bagi memperbaiki kaedah KI bagi pelaksanaan akan datang
