Validating a model of OCBIP practices in Indonesian Islamic Higher Education Institutions: A structural Equation Modeling Approach

    No full text
This study aims to validate and confirm a structural equation modeling (hypothesized model) of organizational citizenship behavior from Islamic perspective (OCBIP) practices in Indonesian state Islamic higher education institutions. This study employed a quantitative survey method to collect the data from 450 academic staff of six States Islamic Higher Education Institutions across Indonesia using a five-point organizational citizenship behavior scale based on Islamic perspective. A descriptive analysis technique was performed to comprehend the respondents view on the practice of underlying factor, followed by the application of confirmatory factor analysis and full-fledge SEM. The study’s findings exhibited that the academic staff in the sampled higher institutions of learning had high inclination and passion for practicing OCBIP in their respective working place. Results also showed a high degree of OCBIP practices by academic staff in selected higher education institutions. Theoretically, the study also established a four factor model of OCBIP practices such as altruism, civic virtue, advocating high moral standards (da’wah), and removing harm (raf’al haraj). The result was deliberated through SEM on the observed instruments, and the hypothesized model of OCBIP under the study was empirically valid and reliable. The findings provided a remarkable contribution for institutions of higher learning and top management to intensify the operation of OCB based on Islamic perspective in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The practical contributions guide the academic staff, particularly in Indonesian state Islamic higher education institutions and other regions, to embrace all principal human resource development and management practices. The study has successfully tested, formulated, and validated the hypothesized model of organizational citizenship behavior based on the Islamic perspective for Indonesian State Islamic Higher Education Institutions

    Get PDF
The rapid growth of mobile technology has opened new opportunities for learners to engage in authentic learning activities. The aim of this systematic review is to provide a synthesis of research on mobile device-based authentic learning in educational environments. This review has analyzed 72 studies published between 2010 and 2019 (until mid-November) in terms of major research purposes, methodologies, research outcomes, subject matter domains, educational levels, educational contexts and geographical distributions. Three research questions guided the review process. The findings showed the major research purpose of a majority of the studies was about investigating the effects of mobile device-based authentic learning on students. Researchers have mostly used mixed-methods research to examine the learning phenomena with a majority of the studies reporting positive learning outcomes. The analysis showed that science and literacy are the most represented content areas, while most of the studies were carried out at the elementary school level. More research was conducted in informal contexts than any other contexts, and the most predominantly used mobile device type was tablet computers. The findings revealed that there is a disproportionate distribution of studies in the literature in terms of geographical contributions as studies tend to concentrate on specific countries or regions. AbstractThis study analyzes the net returns of educational investment in Malaysia using the net present value approach. The estimations consider the tuition payments of nine different bachelor degree programs of public and private universities in Malaysia and the forgone earnings while undertaking the degree programs as the cost of investments in human capital. The returns to education investment are based on the expected income accrued by the individual over the employment period until retirement. Under the assumptions that an individual would work until the retirement age of 60 years and a discount rate of 4 percent, the estimations show that holding a computer science degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia would give the highest net present value. Holding a medical degree, in general, would give the lowest net returns on educational investment as compared to the other selected programs. The net returns are sensitive to the costs of education, earnings and the duration of undertaking the degree programs. Keywords: Human capital investment, net present value, private rate of return, educational investment, Malaysian degree programme

Developing High-Order Thinking in Primary School Students through Qur’anic Stories and the Hikmah Pedagogy of Philosophical Inquiry

    Get PDF
The Hikmah pedagogy (HP) is an offshoot of the Philosophy for Children Programme (P4C), a method used in teaching critical, creative and benevolent thinking based on philosophical inquiry. Slightly different from the original P4C invented by Lipman, HP emphasizes the Islamic perspectives of metaphysics, epistemology and values. Interest in this pedagogy has led Muslim scholars to develop Islamic-based stories to be used with it in the classroom. But to date, no studies involving HP have employed stories drawn from the Qur’an, the holy scripture for Muslims, for the purposes of teaching Islamic Education and improving the thinking of students within this subject.  Hence, this study is an effort to fill this gap in knowledge and research on HP. The participants were 12 primary school children around the age of 10. Using the qualitative case study method with focus group discussion and participant observation in a natural setting as the main data acquisition strategies, the study explored the experiences of these primary schoolers as they discovered Qur’anic stories through HP. Over a period of eight weeks, they learned to ask high-order questions about the stories and engage in debates about the issues and core messages contained within them in a community of inquiry (COI). The objectives were to explore if the pedagogy could enhance their cognitive behaviours (i.e., HOTS) and to find out their views about the method. The findings pointed to the success of HP in improving the students’ HOTS, especially in the skills of inquiring and reasoning, their general mannerisms and interest in the Islamic Education subject. The students also felt that they had a voice in the learning process, and that their opinions were heard and accepted. Overall, the students enjoyed the method and welcomed it as a positive change in their learning of Islamic Education

Behavioural Intention to Use Building Information Modelling (BIM) among Community College Students in Malaysia

Building information modelling (BIM) is one of the new technologies being used in architectural and constructions projects. At present, BIM curricula are being taught in many Malaysian higher learning institutions, including at the certificate level in community colleges. Even though many studies have investigated behavioural intention to adopt BIM in the industrial setting, studies on the intention to use BIM among students during their training or learning have not received the same level of attention. This study, therefore, investigated the extent to which community college students are willing to accept and use BIM. Factors that influenced their behavioural intention to use BIM, as well as the relationship between the factors and intention to use were also examined. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used as the theoretical framework to guide the research, where students’ behavioural intention to use BIM was explained through their perceptions of its usefulness and ease of use, as well as their attitude towards BIM utilization in the classroom. A total of 144 community college students enrolled in the architecture programmes in Malaysia were selected as the sample using convenience sampling. The findings show that the students’ behavioural intention to adopt BIM is high. They also perceive BIM as useful and easy to use, and their attitude towards BIM usage appears to be positive. The regression model produced an adjusted R-squared value of 0.790 indicating that 79% of the total variance in the students’ intention to use BIM can be explained by the three independent variables, i.e., perceived usefulness, ease of use, and attitude. Keywords: Building information modelling, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude, intention to use, behavioural intention, Technology Acceptance Mode

Policy Implementation Performance of Primary School Leaders in Malaysia: An Exploratory Factor Analysis

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to develop a scale for assessing the policy implementation performance of public primary school leaders in Malaysia. The “Implementation Leadership Scale (ILS)” by Aarons, Ehrhart and Farahnak (2014) and part of the “Teacher’s Competency Scale” by Ghafar (2015) were adapted and customised to suit the context of the study in measuring school leaders' policy implementation performance. The respondents were 228 senior primary school leaders who included headmasters and senior teacher assistants in three categories: academic, student affairs, and co-curriculum. Clustered random sampling was used to select the respondents. Results of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed six underlying components of policy implementation performance with 38 indicators, the first four of which are proactive, knowledgeable, supportive, and perseverance implementation leadership. The last two components are ability to perform and standard of performance. Evidently, the six components explained 65.1% of the total variance. The reliability of the policy implementation performance construct was 0.95, while that of other constructs ranges from 0.79 to 0.89. In addition to contributing further insight to the current literature on policy implementation performance, the results also provide a reliable source of information to researchers and professional practitioners of educational policies for future research in policy implementation performance.
