To date, much research on the sustainability of the automotive industry has been published. The classification analysis method has been used to describe the relationship between sustainable design categories and the automotive industry. More than 50 articles related to sustainability towards the automotive industry were found from a search through a database on sustainability and automotive published between 2000 and 2018. This paper attempts to direct attention towards the user and responding to his needs when designing automobiles to help avoid overconsumption. The findings show that the past articles discussed 1) improvement and actions taken; 2) the impact of fulfilling the users’ aesthetic and emotional needs; and 3) categories in sustainable products related to the automotive industry including green initiatives to sustainability, Malaysian industry and green initiatives, environmental aspects, sustainability in product life cycle, sustainable consumption, aesthetics and sustainability, end-life-remanufacturing, and product aesthetics, longevity, and user interaction. The study also found that sustainable design is considered less in meeting consumers’ emotional and aesthetic needs. This study could benefit from making early decisions during the automotive design and development process to avoid the costs and time used through later redesign, especially in Malaysia. Vertical greenery describes a system that allows plants to grow on a facade of a building. The system is classified into two: Living wall and Green façade. In Malaysia, a Vertical Greenery System (VGS) has been practice for about eight years. Though the method is no longer new in the landscape architecture profession, technical knowledge on VGS and selection of plant species is in need of more research. This paper documents the application of VGS on commercial buildings in an urban setting with the objectives of providing information on the implementation of VGS andidentifying plant species used in VGS of commercial buildings. It is common knowledge that rigorous urban development can cause environmental issues such as urban heat island, noise, and air pollutions and others. Therefore, one of the ways to reduce environmental problems is by adopting more landscape solutions. To further probe into it, the study had data collected using a review of literature, personal field observation and interview of experts. The finding indicates that the VGS implicates not only environment, but also aesthetics quality. Hence, the result suggests that quality urban scape can be enhanced through landscape solutions, while VGS is one of them

The electrical lighting system is one of the most significant contributors to energy consumption and operational cost for a library building. The extended operation of the lighting system in the library building consumes a high amount of energy, which requires the adoption of energy efficiency implementation to reduce energy consumption and to overcome energy waste. The objective of this paper is to present the outcomes of investigation on the energy efficiency of the lighting system in a university library building. The lighting system operated in a library building in one of the universities in Malaysia was chosen as the subject of the case study. A semi-structured face to face interview was carried out to interview four respondents who currently in-charge in the lighting system operation of university library building under the study. Looking at the results of the study, the lighting system of the university library is not energy efficient which leads to high energy consumption. To overcome energy waste, the results revealed that a proper guideline for the adoption of energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the lighting system is essential to be developed by the university authority for the university library

    Get PDF
Malaysia suffered from several dengue epidemics with a highly contagious health threat in the last few decades. Analyses of the incidence number of dengue cases and the illegal dumpsite by using the Geographical Information System, GIS, standard deviational ellipse, SDE, produces a scientific-based evidence of dengue map for the urbanized area of Iskandar Puteri, Johor State, Malaysia. A high incidence of dengue cases in the illegal dumpsite area was recognized in radius 200 to 1000 meter with the trend towards the east and west of the city with standard distance (STD) value 0.03. It was identified as a high spot area. It was noteworthy that illegal dumpsite has potential to be a predictive tool for dengue risk to prevent the outbreak. Furthermore, the study recognized the sites i.e. pedestrian walkway, roadside, abundant land and riverside as a spotted illegal dumpsite. Nevertheless, an increment about 40 percent out of the total cost to manage illegal dumpsite from 2011 to 2016 is showing the urgency in tackling this problem comprehensively. Close monitoring system on the sub- contractor of waste disposal collection works and having concentrated effort by involving the relevant government agencies are among crucial issues need to be tackled to solve dengue problem related with illegal dumpsite
