Searching for Data: Nature and Flow of Information Underlying Urban Wild Boar Management Policies. Bordeaux (France) as a Case Study
International audienceNature in the city harbours a wide range of biodiversity. While some species are welcomed, others have settled in uninvited. This is the case with wild boar. The challenge of managing large urban wildlife is not only ecological but also cultural, political, and ethical. This study, driven by the general uncertainty surrounding the socio-ecological issues of coexistence with urban wild boar and potential solutions, explores and discusses the nature and flow of information underlying the specie’s management policies. Our approach is based on a field survey conducted in Bordeaux Metropolis, aimed at tracking the shared information between local stakeholders. The objectives are twofold: i) to gather and analyse existing data on urban wild boar, the problems generated by their presence in the city, and the management systems; ii) to model information flows between social groups facing the challenges of coexistence with wild boar or involved in their management. The study points to a lack of data, along with a general confusion regarding key organisations responsible for monitoring and managing the issue. While the effectiveness of management policies depends on the ability to frame the problem, data is used as an instrument of power by actors engaged in social legitimacy struggles. Assuming that the integration of information is a prerequisite for freedom in urban wildlife management choices, we discuss the implementation of a collaborative reporting platform, tailored to the urban socio-ecological context. Keywords: fauna, city, management, conflict, knowledge, social networ
Transformation numérique vue par les Learning Analytics
International audienceDigital transformation in higher education, as seen through learning analytics (LA) in Learning management systems (LMS), marks a profound break in the way we understand and support learning, as well as the professional gesture of the teacher. These tools enable real-time analysis of learner behavior, providing precise indicators for personalizing educational paths. However, their integration raises ethical issues, particularly in terms of data protection and surveillance. Learning analytics thus represent a powerful lever for new pedagogical directions, but require a rigorous framework to ensure responsible and fair use. This webinar will discuss these issues with speakers from a variety of backgrounds.
Dissent as a formal feature of rule by law: A textual legal ethnography of adjudication in authoritarian contexts
International audienceJudicial adjudication is a process through which, in systems claiming to abide by the rule of law, the polyphony of the many parties in a trial and their voices is submitted to a polishing mechanism through which the normative monologue of the verdict is produced. In that sense, dissent is part of the due process of law, even though it is to be eventually replaced by the singular outcome of the verdict. This paper aims to explore what happens between the parties' initial polyphonic dialogue and the judge's final verdict, which largely erases the practical conditions of its crafting, to see how dissenting voices are formally and substantially accounted for. Drawing on the distinction between the rule of law and the rule by law, it will show that legal formalism can be used to present the appearance of legal conformity, while, in some regimes, achieving the objectives of an authoritarian conception of law, justice and politics. Inspired by realistic jurisprudence and legal ethnomethodology, this study will be conducted from within judicial documentary practices. It relies on cases from Egypt and other countries from the Global South which share a geo-cultural proximity to the Arab World. This study contributes to the field of law in authoritarian contexts by showing, in opposition to the main literature trends, how, practically dissenting and marginalized voices are silenced, repressed or even included in the objectifying and justifying narratives of authoritarian regimes
A theoretical approach to agentivity and race in the social performance of music
Colloque "Le Japon sonore : modernité, constructions sociales, rapports de force / Japan and sound: modernity, social constructs and power relations"14-16 novembre 2024Sociologists of music and cultural production have found that racial inequalities are deeply embedded in the structures and institutions of the arts and cultural industries and consistently disadvantage certain racial groups. These researchers have shown that artists struggle to overcome racial oppression, but that their efforts often inadvertently lead to further reification and perpetuation of racial segregation in the cultural and creative industries. In my talk, I present a theoretical model that can help to better understand how artists and creative workers respond to racial oppression in contexts where racial meanings are activated. Inspired by cultural pragmatics, I theorise five types of performative response to racial stigma and marginalisation, ranging from denial of the importance of race in the arts, through respect for artists’ racialised representations, to an attempt to emancipate themselves from these representations. I argue that a more detailed analysis of the way in which actors in artistic and cultural production deal with difference is fundamental to understanding the social and cultural processes of change and the reinforcement or mitigation of inequalities. The theoretical insights gained may be applicable to other contexts in which professionals are vulnerable to stigmatisation and marginalisation and where this is reinforced by the intertwined axes of difference: race, gender, age, class and disability

International audienceClimate change in south-west France is characterised by a shift from a temperate oceanic climate to a Mediterranean one, presenting major challenges for irrigated agriculture in the Lot-et-Garonne department. Ensuring sustainability in the face of increasing water scarcity is critical, as the agricultural sector is caught in a complex dynamic between maintaining high production and conserving water. The declining availability of irrigation water due to climate change is a major concern. Field research in Lot-et-Garonne conducted in 2022 and 2023 with stakeholders in the prune, kiwi and hazelnut sectors highlighted three key findings: an increasing shift toward more technical and industrialised production methods; the development of both collective and individual irrigation strategies, including frost protection measures; and a notable disconnect between public policy decisions and local expectations, as evidenced by persistent agricultural protests.
