Realities, Communities and Norms in Spoken English Varieties: New Perspectives
International audienceThe present volume focuses on the empirically-based description, modelling and understanding of both native and non-native English-speaking communities. Some specific areas of interest are considered: i) interdisciplinary concerns in the description and modelling of spoken varieties in the contemporary English-speaking world; ii) more specifically, the interplay of social, psychological and cultural factors in phonological and phonetic variation and change (both at the dialectal and sociolectal levels); iii) the sociolinguistic investigation of new norms within spoken English, drawing upon the central notions of indexicality, self-perception and perception of speakers’ linguistic environments and communities; iv) representations of native and non-native English-speaking communities and their relationship to traditional standard varieties.Throughout these areas of interest, the volume highlights the importance of representations, which are examined along three perspectives that permeate in the different chapters: i) from the speaker’s perspective, the construction of linguistic and cultural identities, and the speakers’ perception of a linguistic environment and the sociocultural values attached to it; ii) from the researcher’s perspective, the examination of the criteria and parameters of linguistic representations as devised by communities of speakers, as well as the historical and contemporary conditions of the demographic, social and cultural dynamics of linguistic communities; iii) from the artistic and stylistic perspectives, the ways in which the representations of linguistic and social identities in artistic productions feed the representations that speakers themselves have and produce of their own cultural, linguistic and social identities, and vice versa, which may notably question the issues of authenticity and stereotyping
Cross-border Sport and Leisure: Public Action, Practices and Usage in the European Union
International audienceThe process of European integration has received special attention from European border studies, with a particular focus on internal market issues and cross-border cooperation. Sports are often presented among the transnational activities likely to contribute to “European citizenship” and the creation of an imagined community. Despite the increase in publications in 2016 linking sports, leisure, and cross-border activities, research remains rather limited. In this special issue, we shall focus on the transnational spaces of European cross-border cooperation, as studied from the perspectives of construction and appropriation. We shall go beyond institutional analysis to offer a more comprehensive and balanced approach, taking into account both public policies and the experiences of individuals and groups involved in sports and leisure activities in three border areas. Our analysis will encompass public action, the use of sports areas, facilities and equipment, and cross-border entrepreneurs

Finding the Common Ground: Visibility, Cooperation and Tensions between Russian and Georgian Civil Society Initiatives in Tbilisi, 2023
International audienceThis article explores the coexistence of the Russian émigré community and Georgian civil society in Tbilisi and the tensions between them since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It analyzes how these interactions reflect broader post-colonial dynamics, particularly focusing on the differing political grammars and histories that shape both communities. Drawing from extensive fieldwork, the study highlights the complexities of this encounter, emphasizing the influence of historical narratives, collective action, and the post-Soviet socio-political context. The paper uncovers the nuances of visibility, integration, and mutual perceptions, ultimately contributing to the broader debates on post-socialist societies, migration, and civil society development

Blame-validation: Beyond rationality? Effect of causal link on the relationship between evaluation and causal judgment
International audienceThe Culpable Control Model assumes that causal judgments are irrational: a negative evaluative reaction to an agent would lead individuals to overestimate his causal contribution to a harm. However, the extent to which these judgments deviate from criteria of rationality remains unclear. The two present studies aimed at investigating conditions under which this effect occurs. Participants red a vignette in which the evaluative reaction was operationalized through the agent’s motives (blameworthy, laudable). We also varied the causal link between the agent’s action and the outcome (strong, weak, preempted). In both studies, we found that negative motives influenced causal judgments when a strong action-outcome link could be established. In Study 2, we replicated the effect of motives on causal judgment in the weak link condition. However, participants consistently judged the agent as less causal when the link was weak (vs. strong), regardless of the agent’s motives. These findings show that both the presence and the strength of the actual causal link between the action and the outcome moderate the detrimental effect of negative evaluative reactions on causal judgments. Thus, common sense causal judgments seem to deviate relatively little from the criteria of rationality
tabula: Analysis and Visualization of Archaeological Count Data
An easy way to examine archaeological count data. This package provides several tests and measures of diversity: heterogeneity and evenness (Brillouin, Shannon, Simpson, etc.), richness and rarefaction (Chao1, Chao2, ACE, ICE, etc.), turnover and similarity (Brainerd-Robinson, etc.). The package make it easy to visualize count data and statistical thresholds: rank vs abundance plots, heatmaps, Ford (1962) and Bertin (1977) diagrams
