SYMBOL LEVEL DECODING FOR DUO-BINARY TURBO CODES
This paper investigates the performance of three different symbol level decoding algorithms for Duo-Binary Turbo codes. Explicit details of the computations involved in the three decoding techniques, and a computational complexity analysis are given. Simulation results with different couple lengths, code-rates, and QPSK modulation reveal that the symbol level decoding with bit-level information outperforms the symbol level decoding by 0.1 dB on average in the error floor region. Moreover, a complexity analysis reveals that symbol level decoding with bit-level information reduces the decoding complexity by 19.6 % in terms of the total number of computations required for each half-iteration as compared to symbol level decoding
KINETIC, ISOTHERM AND EQUILIBRIUM STUDY OF ADSORPTION CAPACITY OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE-WASTEWATER SYSTEM USING MODIFIED EGGSHELLS
The studies of adsorption equilibrium isotherm and kinetics of hydrogen sulfide-water systems on calcite-based adsorbents prepared from eggshell are undertaken. The effects of operating variables such as contact time and initial concentration on the adsorption capacity of hydrogen sulfide are investigated. The modified eggshells are characterized by using different analytical approaches such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The batch mode adsorption process is performed at optimum removal conditions: dosage of 1 g/L, pH level of pH 6, agitation speed of 150 rpm and contact time of 14h for adsorbing hydrogen sulfide with an initial concentration of 100-500 mg/L. In the current study, the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin models are used to predict the adsorption isotherms. Our equilibrium data for hydrogen sulfide adsorption agrees well with those of the Langmuir equation. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity is 150.07 mg/g. Moreover, the kinetics of H2S adsorption by using the modified calcite of eggshell follows a pseudo-second-order model. From the current work, we have found that the calcite eggshell is a suitable adsorbent for H2S embeded inside the waste water. Most importantly, chicken eggshell is a waste and vastly available; hence, it could serve as a practical mean for H2S adsorption
OPTIMIZATION OF FLOCCULATION PROCESS BY MICROBIAL COAGULANT IN RIVER WATER
The existing process of coagulation and flocculation are using chemicals that known as cationic coagulant such as alum, ferric sulfate, calcium oxide, and organic polymers. Thus, this study concentrates on optimizing of flocculation process by microbial coagulant in river water. Turbidity and suspended solids are the main constraints of river water quality in Malaysia. Hence, a study is proposed to produce microbial coagulants isolated locally for river water treatment. The chosen microbe used as the bioflocculant producer is Aspergillus niger. The parameters to optimization in the flocculation process were pH, bioflocculant dosage and effluent concentration. The research was done in the jar test process and the process parameters for maximum turbidity removal was validated. The highest flocculating activity was obtained on day seven of cultivation in the supernatant. The optimum pH and bioflocculant dosage for an optimize sedimentation process were between 4-5 and 2-3 mL for 0.3 g/L of effluent concentration respectively. The model was validated by using a river water sample from Sg. Pusu and the result showed that the model was acceptable to evaluate the bioflocculation process
INTELLIGENT FRACTIONAL ORDER ITERATIVE LEARNING CONTROL USING FEEDBACK LINEARIZATION FOR A SINGLE-LINK ROBOT
In this paper, iterative learning control (ILC) is combined with an optimal fractional order derivative (BBO-Da-type ILC) and optimal fractional and proportional-derivative (BBO-PDa-type ILC). In the update law of Arimoto's derivative iterative learning control, a first order derivative of tracking error signal is used. In the proposed method, fractional order derivative of the error signal is stated in term of 'sa' where  to update iterative learning control law. Two types of fractional order iterative learning control namely PDa-type ILC and Da-type ILC are gained for different value of a. In order to improve the performance of closed-loop control system, coefficients of both  and  learning law i.e. proportional , derivative  and  are optimized using Biogeography-Based optimization algorithm (BBO). Outcome of the simulation results are compared with those of the conventional fractional order iterative learning control to verify effectiveness of BBO-Da-type ILC and BBO-PDa-type IL
DEVELOPMENT OF LOW POWER WIRELESS POWER TRANSFER SYSTEM USING RESONANCE PRINCIPLE WITH SECURITY FEATURES
This research describes a resonance principle-based low power Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) system. The reflective impedance model is derived to evaluate the resonance coupling between coils. Additionally, Cockroft Walton voltage boosting circuit is incorporated to boost up the received voltage to the appropriate level, instead of using traditional conditioning circuits. The prototype model, operating at 130 kHz, is demonstrated experimentally and analysed graphically to validate the performance of designed circuit. For an overall span of 100 mm coil separation distance, the maximum efficiency of 60% with no load and 36% loaded system, is observed at a distance of 55 mm with the approximate (e.g., manual) axial orientation of coils. It can be supported widely for the portable electronic products and biomedical devices. As an added contribution, the WPT circuit were enabled by a password security feature using an arduino nicrocontroller.Â
Implementation of Layered Decoding Architecture for LDPC Code using Layered Min-Sum Algorithm
For binary field and long code lengths, Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code approaches Shannon limit performance. LDPC codes provide remarkable error correction performance and therefore enlarge the design space for communication systems. In this paper, we have compare different digital modulation techniques and found that BPSK modulation technique is better than other modulation techniques in terms of BER. It also gives error performance of LDPC decoder over AWGN channel using Min-Sum algorithm. VLSI Architecture is proposed which uses the value re-use property of min-sum algorithm and gives high throughput. The proposed work has been implemented and tested on Xilinx Virtex 5 FPGA. The MATLAB result of LDPC decoder for low bit error rate (BER) gives bit error rate in the range of 10-1 to 10-3.5 at SNR=1 to 2 for 20 no of iterations. So it gives good bit error rate performance. The latency of the parallel design of LDPC decoder has also reduced. It has accomplished 141.22 MHz maximum frequency and throughput of 2.02 Gbps while consuming less area of the design
AIR POLLUITON INDEX PREDICTION USING MULTIPLE NEURAL NETWORKS
Air quality monitoring and forecasting tools are necessary for the purpose of taking precautionary measures against air pollution, such as reducing the effect of a predicted air pollution peak on the surrounding population and ecosystem. In this study a single Feed-forward Artificial Neural Network (FANN) is shown to be able to predict the Air Pollution Index (API) with a Mean Squared Error (MSE) and coefficient determination, R2, of 0.1856 and 0.7950 respectively. However, due to the non-robust nature of single FANN, a selective combination of Multiple Neural Networks (MNN) is introduced using backward elimination and a forward selection method. The results show that both selective combination methods can improve the robustness and performance of the API prediction with the MSE and R2 of 0.1614 and 0.8210 respectively. This clearly shows that it is possible to reduce the number of networks combined in MNN for API prediction, without losses of any information in terms of the performance of the final API prediction model
BIOELECTROCHEMICAL BEHAVIOR OF WILD TYPE BACILLUS CEREUS IN DUAL CHAMBER MICROBIAL FUEL CELL
Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a bioelectrochemical system that uses bacteria as biocatalyst to oxidize organic substrates as well as release electrons, which can be harvested in an external circuit to produce electrical energy. In this study, a proteolytic biocatalyst Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) has been employed for the first time in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The wild type pure culture was isolated from municipal wastewater and identified using Biolog Gen III analysis. The MFCs were fueled with palm oil mill effluent (POME) and attained the maximum power density of about 3.88 W/m3. The electrochemical behavior of MFC operated by B. cereus was evaluated using polarization curve, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetery (CV) analysis. B. Cereus excreated electron shuttling compound which significantly reduced the anode charge transfer resistance (52.95%). The FESEM result shows that B. Cereus has the capability of effective biofilm formation. These results revealed the electrocatalytic potentiality of B. cereus and which makes it a promising candidate to be used in MFCs. Therfore, this biocatlyst can be used to generate electricity through the wastewater valorization
Anti-lipolytic activity and phytochemical screening ofChelianthesalbomarginataagainst pathogenic microorganisms
ABSTRACT:The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic properties of selected fern, Chelianthusalbomarginataand to identify its functional compounds. The methanolic fern-extract (MFE) of these ferns was assessed for anti-bacterial activities by measuring inhibition zones against a panel of pathogenic bacterial strains using agar diffusion method. MFE at a concentration of 25 μg/ml showed marked anti-bacterial activity against all bacterial strains (6-23mm zone of inhibition) and was maximum against Enterobacter sp (23 mm). In addition, the MFE of C. albomarginatahad the best MIC values of 2.25µg/ml against S. aureus and Enterobacter sp., respectively. The MFE also possessed good anti-lipolytic activity (66.5%) against a porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL) and cholesterol oxidase inhibition (79%). This result showed that MFE of C. albomarginataunder optimal concentrationis not only a potent source of natural anti-oxidants and anti-bacterial activity but also possesses efficient cholesterol degradation and anti-lipolytic activities, that is to be beneficial in the body weight management
PEDOT:PSS–MODIFIED PLATINUM MICROELECTRODES FOR MEASUREMENTS IN AQUEOUS MEDIA: EFFECT OF POLYMER SURFACE AREA ON LONG-TERM ANODIC PEAK CURRENT STABILITY
Contamination of drinking water by hazardous agents is becoming a serious global threat, so it is necessary to develop more efficient sensing technologies for applications in liquid media. The limited working lifetime of electrochemical biosensors, especially when measurements are made continuously in liquid media, remains an unsolved challenge. We studied the effect of PEDOT:PSS surface area on platinum microelectrodes with respect to electrode ability to conduct reversible ion-to-electron transduction in liquid media. Electropolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:poly(styrene sulfonate) EDOT:PSS to poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) was conducted on microplatinum electrodes 5 and 10 mm long using a galvanostatic mode. Cyclic voltammetry was used to determine capacitive peak current; higher peak current indicates higher redox capacitance. Field-emisison scanning-electron microscopy was used to study the surface morphology of the PEDOT:PSS transucer layer after measurement in liquid media. The anodic capacitive peak currents did not differ significantly between the two electrodes at day one (~0.20 mA); however, peak current decreased by ~ 20% and ~ 80% at day six for 10- and-5 mm electrode lengths, respectively. The results imply that PEDOT:PSS surface area plays a role in transduction of PEDOT:PSS in aqueous media
