Malaysian Teachers’ Attitudes, Competency and Practices in the Teaching of Thinking
No full textThe development of the third wave of Information and Communication Technology is accompanied by the growing concern on the decline of an individual’s ability to think sharply and wisely. In Malaysia, this concern has brought to fore the prominence of teaching thinking skills within the school system and teachers were expected to be the agents of this change. Are teachers aware of the importance of this thinking ability? Have they been adequately prepared for this paradigm shift? Do they personally feel competent teaching for thinking in the classrooms? This survey attempts to answer these questions and investigates the relationship between teachers’ attitudes and practices. It also examines if there exists any significant differences in teachers’ beliefs and their practices with respect to gender, course attendance and teaching experience. Finally, it explores some of the problems faced by teachers in teaching for thinking
Issues in Quality Management: ISO in Relation to Islamic Standards
Get PDFThe International Standard Organization (ISO) is an international consensus on quality management practice. Recently, an Islamic standard certification services known as ISI 2020 is offered by the Islamic Standard Institute, Malaysia. A sample survey was conducted to investigate managers’ and executives’ perceptions regarding ISO 9002 and ISI 2020. The study found that the respondents understand and are supportive of ISO but the support for ISI 2020 is relatively poor. There is a need for better marketing of ISI 2020 if it is to have a wider appeal

Religiosity and Social Problems in Malaysia
Get PDFThis study analyzes the views of Malaysian teenagers on selected aspects of religion and its impact on their involvement in social problems.Religiosity is conceptualized as consisting of ideological, ritualistic, intellectual, experiential and consequential dimensions. It is measured in two ways: 1) the overall measure of religiosity (for both Muslims and non-Muslims which excludes ideological), and 2) the measure of religiosity for Muslims only (which includes ideological). The research, based upon a questionnaire administered to 2869 secondary school children, found that each component is positively correlated with the overall measure of religiosity. It also reveals that the more religious the person is, the less he or she becomes involved in social problems. Thus, religion plays an important role in contemporary Malaysian society and it should be given due emphasis in Malaysia’s nation building and developmental activities
