    Al-Bīrūnī: Father of Comparative Religion

    No full text
Abū Rayān al-Bīrūnī is famed as a great scientist and a polymath. The intellectual world, however, is less familiar with the fact that al-Bīrūnī is a great scholar of comparative religion. The religions he studied and the methodology he formulated for a “scientific method” of studying religion are impressive. That his works took place very early in the history of the disciplineof comparative religion, and the fact that no other works of his contemporaries came near in dimension and depth, indeed set him up as the forerunner of this discipline. Abū Rayān al-Bīrūnī should, therefore, be declared the Father of Comparative Religion or Religionswissenschaft

    Does Morality Require God?

    No full text
A series of arguments have been offered in favour of a God-based ethical and moral system by convincingly refuting parallel, competing systems like secularist, relativistic and situational ethics which advocate the alleged superiority of their standards devoid of God or religious concepts and precepts. Specifically, the article has examined (i) popular theories of Western ethics, (ii) religious ethics, particularly that of Islamic ethics and its sole dependence and reliance on God and religion, and (iii) an overview and an enunciation and articulation of Islamic perspective on morality. This perspective is provided in the context of modern ethical theories by comparing secular theories with Islamic ethics wherein morality is inextricably linked with religion

Al-Biqā‘ī and Iṣlāḥī: A Comparative Study of Tafsīr Methodology

    No full text
It is recognized by scholars that there is a system of coherence in the Qur’ān and that each and every verse, large and small, constitutes an integral unit of the Qur’ān. There are only two complete tafsīr (exegesis) of the Qur’ān based on the principle of coherence. One is in Arabic and the other is in Urdu. A comparative analysis of the two works shows that the coherence found in the Arabic exegesis was in its formative phase and that it was developed to its full form in the Urdu exegesis. The coherence in the Qur’ān found in the two exegesis deserves closer analysis as it may assist the rebuilding of the grand edifice of Islamic thought and life

British-Zionist Military Cooperation in Palestine, 1917-1939

    Get PDF
The essence of the British military and security formula in Palestine was the smooth establishment of the Jewish national home with minimum costs of lives and money. However, this British pro-Zionist policy created a continuous security problem, and opened the door to all possibilities of Palestinian revolts and uprisings of both national and religious nature. The British were very active in disarming the Arabs and adopted stringent measures to crush their uprisings and revolts. But, they turned a blind eye to the Jewish arms smuggling and Jewish military organizations, especially, the Hagana, which later became the backbone of the Israeli Army. During Palestinian uprisings of 1920, 1921 and 1929 against the Zionists, most of the Palestinian casualties were inflicted by the British forces despite the fact that the Palestinians avoided attacking the British. The British-Zionist cooperation reached its peak during the Palestinian revolt of 1936-1939, and took different forms, including allowing the Jews to establish a military force of twenty two thousand men under the pretext of protecting the Jewish community
