    Application of direct instruction model in teaching swimming to university students

    Purpose: This study aimed to determine the level of development of university students' swimming skills with the direct instruction model (DIM) and whether the model would enhance the learning process. Method: Data were collected through student diaries, field notes, and a semi-structured interview technique developed by the researcher. The data were coded as fear of water, swimming skills, part-to-whole, feedback, student motiva-tion, and skill repetitions. Data were analyzed with MAXQDA 2020 analysis program. Results: According to the findings of the study, it was seen that students overcame their fear of water, their swimming skills improved, and permanent learning was achieved by repeating the previous learning. Discussion/Conclusion: Based on the findings obtained in the study, it can be recommended to use the DIM by taking into account the factors affecting success (learning) in groups who know how to swim and those who do not know how to swim.https://doi.org/10.56639/jsar.172344

    Assessment of 40-year Al Deposition in some Exotic Conifer Species in the Urban Air of Düzce, Türkiye

    Abstract Heavy metal (HM) pollution in urban air, a global dilemma, has increased drastically in the last century. Aluminum (Al) is one of the HMs and a neurotoxic element that can be absorbed into human tissues through digestion, breathing, and skin. Al accumulation in humans can cause diseases and even cause death. Due to the risks it poses to human and environmental health, it is vital to track the Al contamination shifts in the airborne and decrease them. In this study, 40-year Al concentration differences in Pseudotsuga menziesii, Cedrus atlantica, Picea orientalis, Cupressus arizonica, and Pinus pinaster grown in Düzce, Türkiye, the fifth most polluted European town, in terms of direction, tree species, and tissue type were assessed. As a result, Al accumulation in the tissues generally varies as outer bark > inner bark > wood. Whole species can accumulate Al significantly, and Al transfer between adjacent cells in the wood part is limited. In conclusion, all species can be used as biomonitors to track temporal Al pollution changes. However, the highest concentrations, especially in the wood part, were observed in Cedrus atlantica, Picea orientalis, and Cupressus arizonica, and these species were chosen to be the most suitable species to be used in phytoremediation studies.https://doi.org/10.1007/s11270-024-07723-

    Antiprotozoal Effects of Pediococcus acidilactici-Derived Postbiotic on Blastocystis Subtypes ST1/ST3

    Blastocystis, a common intestinal protozoan in humans, is associated with gastrointestinal disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, urticaria, and colorectal cancer. Its genetic diversity and potential for treatment resistance make it a focus of ongoing research. This study evaluated the in vitro antiprotozoal activity of a postbiotic derived from Pediococcus acidilactici as a natural alternative treatment. P. acidilactici cultures were grown in MRS broth under anaerobic conditions, and the postbiotic was collected and characterized for pH, yield, organic acid composition, and phenolic compound content. Human isolates of Blastocystis subtypes ST1 and ST3 were cultured in Jones’ medium and exposed to varying postbiotic concentrations for 72 h. Viability was assessed microscopically. The cytotoxic effect of the postbiotic-derived P. acidilactici was evaluated by investigating its impact on the viability of HT-29 cells using the Cell Counting Kit 8. The postbiotic showed a 7% yield and a pH of 4.52 ± 0.11. It contained seven different organic acids, predominantly lactic acid, and eleven phenolic compounds, with naringin as the most abundant. At 4.38 mg/mL, the postbiotic achieved over 94% inhibition and 100% inhibition at 8.75 mg/mL and above. A pH analysis confirmed that the inhibition was independent of the culture medium acidity. Cell viability was not affected at the postbiotic concentration showing 100% antiprotozoal activity (8.75 mg/mL). These findings suggest that the P. acidilactici postbiotic is effective on a mixed culture of ST1 and ST3 subtypes and holds promise as a safe, natural antiprotozoal agent.     Clinical outcomes of endovascular aortic repair in abdominal aortic aneurysms: a single-center experience

    Aims: This study aims to evaluate the early and mid-term clinical outcomes of 35 patients who underwent endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in a tertiary peripheral hospital. Methods: A total of 35 patients who underwent EVAR due to AAA in our hospital between May 2021 and May 2025 were evaluated retrospectively. Demographic characteristics of the patients, aneurysm morphology, intervention details, perioperative complications, postoperative follow-up process, and mortality rates were analyzed. Results: Of the 35 patients included in the study, 30 were male (85.7%) and five were female (14.3%). The mean age was 70.8±7.9 years. The mean aneurysm diameter was measured as 63.1±10.7 mm. Early postoperative mortality was observed in 2 of the patients. Both of these patients were admitted due to ruptured AAA. No other complications were encountered in the early postoperative period. All patients were followed up in the intensive care unit for 24 hours after the procedure. The total hospital stay varied between 5±1 days. Early mortality was observed in 2 patients (5.7%) during the hospital follow-up period. No endoleak was observed in the 6-month follow-up after the procedure. Conclusion: Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair is a safe and effective treatment method with lower morbidity and mortality rates compared to open surgery in appropriate patients. However, regular radiological follow-up of patients and early detection of complications directly affect treatment success.https://doi.org/10.47582/jompac.174371

    Edebi metinler yazıldıkları dönemin özelliklerini yansıtmaktadır ve bu metinlerin çevirisi de kaynak metnin ortaya çıktığı dönemin özelliklerini yansıtan unsurlar içermektedir. Dolayısıyla, çeviri metinler, kaynak metnin yazıldığı dönemin özelliklerini hedef kitleye tanıtması açısından da önemli bir misyona sahiptir. Bu yüzden, bu çalışma Edgar Allan Poe tarafından kaleme alınmış ve önemli bir gotik kurgu örneği olan “The Fall of the House of Usher” (“Usher Evi’nin Çöküşü”) adlı eserde yer alan, tek kadın karakter olan, Madeline'in özelliklerinin, Eugene Albert Nida'nın (1964) biçimsel (formal) ve devingen (dynamic) eşdeğerlik teorisi çerçevesinde ve gotik kurgularda kadınlara atfedilen özellikler bağlamında, iki Türkçe çeviri metnine nasıl aktarıldığını orta koymayı hedeflemektedir. Sonuçlara göre, kaynak metinde ana karakterin sessiz, pasif, savunmasız, çaresiz, evcimen, geleneksel oluşu gibi özelliklerinin vurgulandığı görülmüştür. Çevirmenlerin bu özellikleri nasıl yansıttıklarına bakıldığında, her iki çevirmen de Madeline' in temel özelliklerini kaynak metinde olduğu gibi, hedef metinlere aktarmıştır.     Comparison of Pb, Cd, Zn and Cr content of some mineral concrete admixtures

    Today, the demand for urban areas due to population growth worldwide and migration from rural to urban areas increases the need for new residential areas and new housing construction. This need also increases the demand for concrete, which is an important raw material especially in the building sector and constitutes a significant portion of construction input costs. Therefore, studies on the use of various environmental wastes as concrete admixtures in order to both reduce the cost of concrete and to dispose of environmental wastes are gaining importance and many studies have been conducted on the subject in recent years. However, the lack of sufficient data on the chemical structure of concrete admixtures leads to a lack of information on the environmental impacts of construction activities as well as the health of people working in the sector. For these reasons, this study aimed to determine and compare the Pb, Cr, Cd and Zn contents of some materials used as concrete admixtures. As a result of the study, it was determined that these heavy metal contents can vary significantly on a material basis and can reach up to 37.36 ppm for Pb, 103.67 ppm for Cr, 446.18 ppm for Zn and 444.85 ppm for Cd. This result shows that workers in the sector working with these materials may face serious health problems.     Removal of humic acid from aqueous solutions using activated carbons obtained from hollyhock flower and black pine cone

    Aktif karbon, en genel tanımı ile porozite yani boşluk/yer/alan etrafını kaplayan/kapatan karbon atomları olarak tanımlanabilmektedir. Aktif karbon: karbon siyahından nükleer grafitlere, karbon fiberlerden elektrot grafitlerinin kompozitlerine ve bunlardan gibi çok daha fazla üyeye sahip olan karbon ailesinin bir üyesidir. Diğer bir deyişle de, farklı boyutlarda, çok küçük miktarlarında devasa yüzey alanlarına sahip olabilen ve bulunduğu ortamda adsorplama yeteneği oldukça yüksek olan maddelerdir. Ortamda bulunan organik maddenin oldukça büyük bir kısmını oluşturan ve genel tabir ile humus olarak adlandırılan yapılar da, ekosistemlerin hem kendi içinde hem de birbirleri ile olan etkileşimleri açısından önem arz etmektedir. Humus olarak adlandırılan maddeler üç kısımda incelenebilmektedir; hümik asitler, fulvik asitler ve hüminler. Hümik ve fulvik asitler genel tabirle belirli pH aralıklarında ve belirli şartlar altında çözünebilen ve etkileşime girebilen kısımları; hüminler ise etkileşime girmeyen diğer kısımları ifade etmektedirler. Etkileşimde bulunan kısımlar olarak hümik ve fulvik asitler, serbets haldeki grupları, girift ve kompleks yapıları ve çoklu bağ yapabilme kapasiteleri ile bulundukları ortam neticesinde hem fayda sağlayabilmekte hem de koşullar olumsuzlaştığında ekosistem için sorunlar ortaya çıkarabilmektedir. Bu yüksek lisans tez çalışmasında, hatmi çiçeği ve karaçam kozalağı bitkilerinden kimyasal aktivasyon yöntemiyle aktif karbonlar üretilmiş; değişen sıcaklıklarda ve NaOH muamelesi ile üretilen aktif karbonlar ile sulu çözeltilerden farklı sıcaklık ve pH değerlerinde hümik asit giderimi çalışılmıştır. Üretilen aktif karbonların Taramalı Elektron Mikroskobu (SEM), Brunauer-Emmet-Teler (BET), Enerji Dağıtıcı X-Işını Spektrometresi (EDX), Fourier Dönüşümlü Kızılötesi Spektroskopisi (FTIR) ve Azaltılmış Toplam Yansıtma (ATR) analizleri yapılarak karakterizasyonları gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan çalışma sonucunda Hatmi çiçeği için 2M NaOH muamelesinde 600 derecede 21,33 m2/g, 700 derecede 18,62 m2/g; Karaçam kozalağı için 2M NaOH muamelesinde 600 derecede 79,48 m2/g ve 700 derecede 14,64 m2/g yüzey alanına sahip oldukları tespit edilmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra aktif karbonların Hümik asit giderim veriminin artan yüzey alanı ve sıcaklıkla arttığı ancak artan pH ile azaldığı bulunmuştur

    Consumer society and sustainability: A semiotic analysis of campaigns on ecological fashion thought

    It can be seen that studies on the phenomenon of consumption focus on the relationship between humans and the phenomenon of consumption and attempt to understand the place of consumption on the psychological, social and economic plane. Humanity, which consumes and accumulates excess or beyond its needs, also realizes the irreparable dimension of the depleting nature and its elements. In this context, ecological fashion, which has emerged as a sensitivity in recent years, and studies in this field will reveal whether sustainable fashion is possible or not. H&M, a ready-to-wear brand that produces for women, men and children, has in recent years become the representative of ecological fashion with its products produced from recycled and natural materials. In this context, in this study, a semiotic analysis was made of the section on the brand's website where environmentally harmless products defined as "sustainability" are included and the production and distribution processes are explained in detail. The combination of visual elements and selected texts used while explaining the process reveals the difference of ecological fashion from the existing fashion concept and the features presented as "alternative". The analysis shows that the approach, which carries out its activities with the slogan of sustainable fashion and stands out with its environmentally friendly and harmless features, also tries to make "consumption" sustainable. The fact that the production and distribution processes of the products are quite different and "innocent" has turned into a campaign that makes it necessary to choose them in this context.     Journal of ‘Computers & Education’ from Past to Present: Bibliomeric Analysis (1978-2025)

    This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of Computers & Education, a leading academic journal in the field of educational technology, covering the period from 1978 to 2025. Drawing upon data from the Web of Science database, a total of 4,715 articles were examined using bibliometric techniques, including co-citation, co-authorship, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic evolution analysis. The findings reveal a significant increase in publication volume and citation rates, particularly after 2008, indicating a growing scholarly interest in digital education. Thematic clustering analyses identified three dominant research foci: student performance and achievement, technology-enhanced learning and motivation, and user acceptance and self-efficacy. Furthermore, collaboration networks show that Taiwan, China, the USA, and the UK are central hubs in the global educational technology research landscape. Thematic evolution analysis reveals a paradigm shift from early discussions on "computer and distance education" toward more recent emphases on "digital content," "virtual learning," and "student-centered design." This study contributes to the literature by mapping structural patterns and identifying key trends, prolific authors, institutions, and countries, offering a macro-level understanding of how Computers & Education has shaped the educational technology discourse over nearly five decades.https://doi.org/10.18009/jcer.166225
