    The Cubic Lambert W Function

    No full text
This paper presents a cubic generalization of the Lambert function, or simply called the Cubic Lambert W function, and establish its Taylor series, derivative and its real branches, Taylor series expansion of its integral and its Mellin transform. The Mellin transform is known to be useful in computer science in the analysis of algorithm and in number theory in the analysis of the prime-counting function while it is a fact that Taylor series expansion of the function is useful to obtain approximation values. In the final section of the paper, the derivative and the real branches of the function are used to establish that the fixed-point solution in the application to a nonlinear differential equation is stable

Superdiffusive Fractional Brownian Motion Memory of Annual Mean Global Temperature Anomaly

    No full text
The NASA’s GISTEMP Team temperature anomaly data from year 1880-2015 has undergone two different data treatments: 5-year moving average and second-generation data. Together with the untreated data, the log-log plot of mean square displacement (MSD) of temperature anomaly versus time was derived. Since it showed a linear response, fractional Brownian motion (fBM), which was derived using white noise analysis was shown. The fBM with Hurst exponent, H = 1 was then used as a fit to the MSD of temperature anomaly which implied super-diffusion. It must be pointed out that the upper bound of the H index is the condition necessary for the chosen memory function rendering the best fit to the temperature anomaly. Considering that global temperature follows a natural cycle when unperturbed, this anomalous behavior can be attributed to a driving force in the time evolution of the temperature anomaly. These ‘forces’ may be attributed to both the natural heating cycle in the Earth’s surface and human activities particularly on technological changes and innovations which already begun even before the 1880s

Salmon’s E-tivity Approach in Teaching Mathematical Concepts in Physics

    No full text
The study is a Quasi-Experimental research design employing Solomon’s four-group method of comparing the performance of the experimental and control groups. It aimed to determine the impact of Salmon’s E-tivity approach on students’ Mathematical performance in Physics. E-tivities have five stages namely: access and motivation, online socialization, information exchange, knowledge construction and development. Relevant activities were derived from interactive simulations of Physics Education Technology (PHET) and a facebook group chat was created for the realization of the process. Seventy six (76) Grade 9 students of Subangdaku Technical Vocational School were randomly selected for the conduct of the study. The researcher adopted a validated questionnaire from DepEd to determine the performance level of the groups. The data were analyzed via dependent, independent t-tests, and ANOVA (single factor). Findings of the study showed that Salmon’s e-tivity approach is more effective in improving students’ Mathematical performance in Physics. The positive response of the approach was verified from experimental group’s reflection of the entire stages. Thus, e-tivities fit the learners of today and can help address their difficulties in dealing with the mathematically challenged topics in Physics

From Novice to Expert: The Lived Experience of Master Teachers in Science

    No full text
This study explored the lived experiences of Master Teachers to help bridge the teaching gap with the novice Science teachers. This phenomenological inquiry utilized a set of open-ended questions constructed based on Domain 1 of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) and employed semi-structured interviews among seven purposively chosen participants. Data were recorded, transcribed and analyzed through Colaizzi’s seven-step method. It revealed nine themes that are aligned to three of the seven domains of the PPST. It emphasized that to become master teachers, time, effort and hard work have to be invested by the novice Science teachers. Their lived experiences are considered intricate, unique and encompassing. Finally, it is recommended that the explored lived experiences through the PPST should be considered as a springboard data for DepEd administrators, coteachers, stakeholders’ community, and students to improve the teaching-learning process

    No full text
An evaluation of the implementation of the School Monitoring, Evaluation and Adjustment (SMEA) System of the Department of Education (DepEd) was conducted to aid on the improvement and upgrading of the system. A researcher-made instrument was utilized to quantitatively analyze the implementation and interviews were conducted to identify the challenges and struggles of its implementation. Also, a close look at the SMEA questionnaires was done to identify the level of compliance with the established standards. The analysis showed high levels of implementation, however, the qualitative analysis showed gaps in the validity and reliability of results. The burden of too many indicators and the confusion by questions that are hard to quantify in a single questionnaire were identified as the major problem. The need for indicators, which consider the setting and context of each school, was identified as the primary need. A sense of ownership of the indicators and commitment building were among the recommendations. In addition, a systems approach of integrating established school systems such as School Improvement Planning, Results-Based Performance Management System and the Monitoring and Evaluation System was also suggested. The result of the study could contribute to the management of schools, enhancement of policies and improvement of DepEd systems

Exploring the Voting Behavior of the Cebuano Electorate

    No full text
An essential tool for measuring the exercise of democracy is through looking into thefactors considered by voters in choosing a candidate. This study presents how demographicfactors such as age bracket, sex, educational attainment, and salary bracket affect thepreferences of voters. In the process, this study also illustrates how culture and socializationaffect political choices. A survey with a stratified random sampling technique wasconducted across Cebu province with 606 registered voters. The survey quantitativelyexhibits the patterns of the voting behavior of Cebuano electorates in the 2016 Presidentialand Vice Presidential elections. It identifies elements that influenced the electorates\u27preference towards a certain candidate. Using the multivariate canonical correlationanalysis, the study revealed that the demographic profiles of the respondents weresignificantly correlated with their preferred characteristics of a presidentiable and vicepresidentiable. The characteristic preference of the Cebuano voters for president and the vicepresident differs across age bracket, sex, educational attainment, and salary bracket. Thestrength of such a relationship can be predicted using the mode

Antagonistic Activity of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Against Phytopathogenic Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Schlecht.) as a Biological Control

    No full text
The search for the most effective, organic, biological control against fungal-related diseases of economically-important crops such as in banana is still being encouraged in the Philippines. This study compared the antagonistic activity of beneficial endophytic fungi, T. viride and entomopathogenic fungi, M. anisopliae against F. oxysporum (causative agent of Banana Wilt disease) using dual culture method for 10 days incubation period. The study employed Complete Randomized Design (T1= T. viride vs. F. oxysporum; T2= M. anisopliae vs. F. oxysporum; and control plate = F. oxysporum alone) in five replications. Radial growth and percent inhibition of radial growth (PIRG), as well as Bell rating across treatment groups, were analyzed using ANOVA (p\u3c0.05) and T-test (p ≤0.05), respectively. Results showed that both biological control fungi (T. viride and M. anisopliae) manifested antagonistic activity against F. oxysporum, where T. viride registered stronger inhibition (PIRG=72.37%; Bell Rating=2) than M. anisopliae (PIRG=31.27%; Bell Rating=3). The superior antagonistic action of T. viride and M. anisopliae against F. oxysporum may be attributed to their production of hydrolytic enzymes which facilitated growth inhibition of F. oxysporum. To observe stable antagonistic interaction among these fungi, future studies may consider longer ncubation period as well as in vivo field trial on infected banana crops

Suggesting Without Recommending: Relativism in the Zhuangzi

    No full text
At first glance, one sees an apparent contradiction upon reading the title of this article. This is due to the fact that when one suggests, the implication is that one is at the same time pushing for a certain course of action or, perhaps, is trying to endorse some product. It would be quite absurd if one says “You do this” and then tell this same person “You do the opposite of what I tell you”. This notion of suggestion, nevertheless, is not to be equated with the way we understand the thoughts of the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi whom one day dreamt that he was a butterfly and upon awaking no longer knew whether he was a person dreaming that he became a butterfly or vice versa, that he was a butterfly traveling in a dreamland as a man. The Zhuangzi is a protean text which meansthere is certainly more than meets the eye in the entire text. Thus, to read the Zhuangzi from one point of view only or to interpret it according to a limited perspective is to altogether miss its entire message. For Zhuangzi, man fails to distinguish between reality as seen in nature and man’s way of describing it through language. Obviously, for him, the constant use of metaphors betrays a hidden thesis in which he accepts that man\u27s best guide or, should we say, the best chance of finding the way lies in the things surrounding him – practically anything that has already existed even before he came into this world

    No full text
This study assessed the Alternative Learning System-Accreditation and Equivalency (ALS-A&E) Writing curriculum for secondary clientele with the end goal of developing an enhanced session guide. It was focused on how it is taught, the clientele’s ability to write an academic composition and the implementers’ and clientele’s concerns in its implementation. Two program implementers and 48 clientele were purposively chosen as respondents. Data were obtained from the compositions written by the respondents which were expressed in Waray and English languages, questionnaire, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Subsequently, data gathered were analyzed accordingly following the six-step techniques for a case study outlined by Yin (2014). Results revealed that the curriculum is conventionally facilitated. Also, the clientele can easily write a composition in Waray but find it challenging using the English language. Learning associated factors aggravated by insufficient logistics support and cognitive demands are among those echoed by the respondents’ as their core concerns pertinent to the curriculum implementation. Accounting things holistically, there is a need to re-engineer the existing instructional delivery practices for this curriculum

    No full text
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) may leave permanent and long-term disability placing a burden on the family. Disability following the CVA often required family, especially spouse to provide care. Spouses may struggle to adapt to a long-term caregiving role and relationships with CVA survivors. The study aims to describe the lived experiences of spouses of CVA survivors innorder to gain a deep and thorough understanding of the phenomenon. The Husserlian descriptive phenomenology design was used to purposively identify the eight informants. The data were gathered through an interview, after which transcription was done and analyzed using Colaizzi\u27s method. After the thematic analysis, four themes emerged: (1) Increased Domestic Workload (2) Exhaustion: (a) Physically Demanding (b) Psycho-emotional Distress (c) Financial Burden, (3) Bound for a Mission and Responsibility: (a) Being Obligated (b) Strength of Relationship (c) Spouse Welfare, (4) Sense of Loss: (a) Loss of Understanding (b) Loss of Hope (c) Loss of Control. Taking care of CVA survivor had contributed to the changes in the lives of these spouses. The physical, emotional, psychological and financial matters had to be considered that could affect the wellbeing of both the spouses and the CVA survivor. The support of spouses of CVA survivors and their families in achieving optimum long-term adjustment was essential
