Student Teachers’ Impact on their Basic Education Students’ Cognitive, Affective and Social Development
The study examined the student teachers’ influence on the cognitive, affective and social development of the basic education students. The findings suggested that the presence of student teachers in the classroom had greater impact on the students’ affective and social dimensions rather than their cognitive development even with the learning they had. Student teachers from TEIs with a larger population were perceived by their students to be more sociable and affectionate than those from TEIs with fewer student teachers. But the latter have a better attitude towards teaching and better workplace interactions
An Empirical Analysis of the Impact of the Teacher Factor on Student Performance across Countries Based on the 2003 TIMSS Mathematics Scores
The study analyzed the impact of six (6) teacher characteristics on the mathematics performance of students based on the TIMSS (2003) mathematics scores of the top 20 and lowest 20 performing countries. Data analysis consisted of an initial exploratory procedure via forced cluster analysis and a formal test of statistical hypotheses through t-tests, analysis of variance and regression analysis. Results revealed that only three (3) of the six (6) characteristics, namely: hiring system of the nations, percentage of teachers with board certification, and nature of induction programs have statistically significant bearings on the overall quality of mathematics education in these countries
Utilization of Graphic Organizers in Teaching Mathematics
This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of graphic organizers in teaching Mathematics to college students of JRMSU during the first semester, school year 2009-2010. Researcher-made tests were used to measure the frequency of graphic organizer use by 43 algebra instructors and the effect on the performance of 339 students. The statistical tools used were mean computations, t-test, and Pearson r Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. There was a significant relationship between instructors’ utilization of graphic organizers and the students’ skills in Mathematics. The use of graphic organizers in other subject areas or departments, and the conduct of more researches both to explore the effects of long-term consistent exposure to its use and to measure its effectiveness on student performance using standardized test should be done
Dynamics of Code-Switching In Academic Discourse: Evidenc
The aim of uniting the Filipinos for community building allowed government leaders and lawmakers to see the role of language motivating them to draft and promulgate laws for communication and instruction. However, at present, the government only perceives the critical role of Filipino in performing civic duties, declaring it a national code and English, to respond internationally, while regional languages are only used as auxiliary codes up to grade two only, leaving non-Tagalogs with doubts of the real purpose of legalizing Filipino and English as languages of communication and instruction. This paper reveals that auxiliary languages with English exist in academic discourse to facilitate learning even in a Higher Educational Institution
Challenging Popular Assumptions on Teacher Education
The Revised Policies and Standards for the Undergraduate Teacher Education Curriculum, articulated in CHED Memorandum Order No. 30 (CMO 30) in 2004, marks a significant curriculum reform for teacher education in the Philippines. This paper examines the ideas and assumptions behind the reform policies articulated in CMO 30, explores the theoretical basis of these assumptions within the framework of levels of curriculum representation, and validates these assumptions from the perspective of teacher educators and students in two selected teacher education institutions in Cebu City. Using a researcher-made five-point scale, the respondents assessed a set of pre-specified assumptions on the revised teacher education curriculum with regard to the extent to which these assumptions hold in their teaching-learning environments. Results showed that the assumptions that had the highest perception ratings among teacher educators and students revolved around the assessment of entry competence of teacher education students; strengthening the connections between theory and teaching practice through the Experiential Learning Courses; the use of the National Competency- Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS) as basis for teaching practice; and the integration of theoretical principles, concepts and methods in professional education courses. To validate these assumptions, respondents also assessed their teaching-learning environments using a 7-point semantic differential based on bipolar characteristics of conventional and constructivist learning environments in terms of the nature of classes, the role of teachers and students, learning modes, instructional emphasis and assessment of student learning. Results showed that teacher educators perceived their teaching-learning environment as moving towards the constructivist while students perceived their environment as a mix of conventional and constructivist. From the results, implications and challenges for curriculum implementation and research are drawn as basis for recommending concrete actions towards the delivery of teacher education programs based on reform efforts anchored on evidence from research
Governing Digital Transformation in Taiwan
This paper tries to provide a new perspective to illustrate the changing role of government from ‘top’ policy maker towards policy moderator based on the empirical findings of the e-Taiwan Project. The architecture of governing digital transformation in conjunction with e-Taiwan policy can be observed from two aspects. One is that the state is governing the process of technological change with special reference to introducing ICTs intensively in order to transform Taiwan from an industrial island into a digital island, while the other is that the state is changing the governing nature of digital development policy from a government structure to that of a governance structure. It is argued that traditional theories about the political economy of development can not fully fit into the trend of changes in the digital age. The new type of government-industrial relationship in the domain of the e-Taiwan policy can be characterized as governing digital transformation based on the combination of professional network and intergovernmental network

This paper tackles the current Gestalt practice in the country through the students’ developmental activity program participated in by adolescent college students.. The Gestalt therapy cultural milieus are also described through the vignette of extra curricular students’ activities in the various academic institutions in Cebu, Philippines. This paper also attempts to introduce the Philippines as one of the many countries in Asia that study, adhere to, practice and advocate Gestalt Therapy—in a very beautiful gestalt way
Multi-Specie Lotka-Volterra Predator-Prey Model with Environmental Stochasticity
The interaction of multiple specie of animals in an ecological system is modeled by first reducing the ecological system to a kernel ecological system consisting of keystone species and top predators in the environment through the Graph Theory. From the reduced kernel ecological system of keystone specie, a system of Lotka-Volterra differential equations is used to describe the predator-prey relationships that exist. The equations for the number of organisms per species were derived and additive environmental stochasticity or noise are added to each equation. The noise is assumed to come from an extreme value distribution or Gumbel distribution to reflect the impact of extreme weather conditions on the population dynamics of the entire ecological system
Deconstruction and Reconstruction: Review of the Latest Version of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Law
Since 1982, the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act has been revised several times. Among all the revisions, the latest one, which was revised in 2005, alters the original contents the most, so much so that it appears to reconstruct the basic principles of cultural heritage preservation in Taiwan. The object of this paper is to view how the concepts of cultural heritage have been adjusted and discussed in the successive revisions of the Act. In addition, the paper attempts to point out several problems that the latest version of the Act and its related concepts may encounter when practiced in reality
Affected Families in the Development Area of the MCDP III Project
The Metro Cebu Development Project III (MCDP) Project, particularly the Cebu South Reclamation Project is one of the three major components of the project package. A project of such magnitude requires an Environmental Compliance Certificate and one of its components is the social aspect of the study, whereby social preparation and acceptability would be of equal importance as those of the Physical and biological aspects of the environmental impact assessment. It was then the focus of this study to determine the social acceptability of the Cebu South Reclamation Project specifically among the directly affected families which are composed of marginalized fishermen and those families subsisting on the fishing –related activities which are dependent on their day-work for a living. Results revealed that provisions for the social component of the project were provided and that the concerns of the stakeholders were amply addressed
