The Impact of Urban Transport on Women’s Autonomy in South Asian Cities: A Case Study of University Students in Karachi

    No full text
This research examines the structural impact of urban transport on university-going women’s autonomy. The primary focus of the study is how challenges of safety and security within urban transport i.e. risk of cat-calling and physical harassment influence the psychological autonomy of university-going women. I investigate women between the ages of 18-25 years who are enrolled in an undergraduate program at a university in Karachi. They belonged to either of the ten categories as modes of transport: Private Transport (Self), Private Transport (Driver or family member), Carpool, Bus, Rickshaw, University Pickup Point, Private Van, Ride Hailing Services (Car), Ride Hailing Services (Rickshaw), and Bike. This study adopts a quantitative approach: an online survey was circulated on online social media platforms via Google Form, collecting data from 105 women across different universities in Karachi. The survey was divided into five parts - Consent, Basic Profile, Choice of Transport (Trip 1), Choice of Transport (Trip 2), and Autonomy (replicated from the Noom, 1999 questionnaire). Mobility (the free right to movement) is an essential aspect of the analytical framework. There are three main primary indicators of autonomy examined in terms of self-determination theory: functional, attitudinal, and emotional autonomy. Transport, on the other hand, is examined in terms of time, mode, and duration of travel. The results highlight that commuting from home to university and university to home can cause severe levels of anxiety that are manifested through physiological indicators. Moreover, experiences of cat-calling and physical harassment contribute to reduced levels of autonomy

    No full text
The main objective of this research project was to evaluate the effectiveness of Khaadi\u27s retail mix elements—Product, Price, Layout, and Customer Service—on enhancing customer experience and loyalty. The analysis was done to identify strengths and areas for improvement within Khaadi\u27s retail strategy to support the company\u27s goal of moving to an experience store model across its network. In-depth interviews with Khaadi’s Senior Management and Store Managers were conducted to gather insights into the strategic and operational considerations behind the retail mix elements. The interviews were transcribed, coded, and thematically analyzed to complement and deepen the understanding gained from quantitative data. Utilizing customer survey data, we conducted extensive statistical analyses, including multiple regression and ANOVA, to quantify the impact of each retail mix element on customer experience and loyalty. This approach allowed us to assess the relative influence of different factors within the fashion retail environment. Some key findings were that after-sales service is the most important driver of customer loyalty, emphasizing the importance of strong post-purchase support. Product selection also plays a significant role in fostering loyalty, indicating that a diverse assortment is essential. Additionally, store layout and ambiance have a greater impact on customer experience, suggesting that these elements are key to creating a memorable shopping environment. Finally, the overall quality of customer service, including knowledgeable and helpful staff, enhances both customer experience and loyalty, with a slightly stronger impact on experience. This research provides Khaadi with actionable insights into how its retail mix can be optimized to improve customer satisfaction and loyalty. Implementing the recommended changes will not only enhance the overall shopping experience of customers but also instill loyalty which will result in repeat purchases and increase in long term brand equity

A Case Study of the Effectiveness and Challenges of Internal Mobility at Foodpanda Pakistan

    No full text
This study examines the effectiveness and challenges of the Internal Mobility (IM) Program at Foodpanda Pakistan, initiated in 2021, aimed at enhancing employee development, engagement, and retention by providing growth opportunities within the organization. The research was conducted through interviews and surveys, focusing on key stakeholders such as HR representatives, line managers, and IM program participants. Key findings highlight that Foodpanda’s IM program has facilitated over 60% of internal hires, particularly for junior roles, contributing to significant cost and time savings compared to external recruitment. Internal recruitment was shown to reduce hiring costs by approximately 13.5 million PKR annually, largely through lower advertising, administrative, and onboarding expenses. Additionally, the program has resulted in faster filling of positions, improved employee satisfaction, and higher retention rates, particularly among Millennials and Gen Z employees. However, challenges include skill mismatches, managerial resistance, and difficulties in transitioning employees between departments. Moreover, the program revealed potential drawbacks such as loss of team cohesion and lack of fresh perspectives due to reliance on internal hiring. Recommendations include aligning managerial incentives with organizational goals and increasing transparency and support in the transition process. Overall, Foodpanda’s IM program has demonstrated substantial benefits in talent retention, cost efficiency, and employee satisfaction, although certain strategic adjustments are recommended to maximize its effectiveness

Exploring the Accounting Treatment of Ijarah - A Study of AAOIFI vs IFRS in Pakistan

    No full text
This research paper explores the application of Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) Standards and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by Islamic banks in Pakistan, with a specific focus on the accounting treatment of Ijarah transactions. Islamic banking prohibits interest under Shariah law and relies on asset-based financing, which requires unique accounting practices. Ijarah, a form of leasing considered Shariah-compliant, cannot be accounted for in the same way as conventional leases under IFRS. This creates a conflict in financial reporting for Islamic banks, especially when it comes to Islamic mortgages and leasing, as these institutions must navigate the challenge of complying with global accounting standards while maintaining Shariah compliance. AAOIFI was established to develop Shariah-compliant accounting standards that emphasize ethical finance, while IFRS, created by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), provides a globally recognized framework aimed at ensuring transparency and consistency across financial markets. However, IFRS lacks specific guidance on Shariah-compliant finance, which makes it difficult to apply these standards directly to Islamic banks. As a result, Islamic banks in Pakistan often adopt a dual-framework approach, using both IFRS and AAOIFI standards to maintain Shariah compliance—necessary for domestic credibility—while also adhering to global standards that enhance transparency and comparability. This dual approach not only helps Islamic banks meet the ethical and legal requirements of Shariah but also makes them more appealing to international investors, who seek consistent and transparent financial reporting
