PREDICTING EXPECTED GOALS AND PLAYOFF SUCCESS IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

    No full text
We explore the within-game variables that can be used to project the typical number of goals a National Hockey League (NHL) team scores in a game. In particular, we used Poisson-type count-response models to model expected goals for a game given other variables such as shots, faceoffs won, penalty minutes, etc. Subsequently, we analyzed the teams whose actual scoring production over- and underperformed our model’s expected goals projection in the regular season, and investigated whether it could be used for predicting their performance in the playoffs. The data used to conduct this research are regular season and postseason game logs for every NHL team over the past 9 seasons (2016-2024). The data was scraped from hockey-reference.com

Latin American Guitar Music FROM LATIN AMERICA TO COLLEGE HALL

    No full text
This paper was part of preparation for a performance of select Latin American guitar compositions and ensemble works. Studying the rhythms and histories of the composers’ nations, this paper will provide context for the pieces, Manhã de Carnaval and Samba de Orfeu by Luiz Bonfa, Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5 & Mazurka Choro by Heitor Villa Lobos, Estrellita by Manuel Maria Ponce, Por Una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel, and Milonga No. 5 by Fernando Carlos Tavolaro. This paper will detail the lives and music of the selected composers, in addition, it will talk about the musical histories of their native countries–Brazil for Bonfa and Villa-Lobos, Mexico for Ponce, and Argentina for Gardel and Tavolaro. Overall, this is truly ‘world music’, with the composers taking in a melting pot of musical influences only to send it back into the world to influence others

Re-Fashioning the Working Woman: Using the Pattern and Decoration Movement to Create Femmage Designs on Female Work Attire

    No full text
“Femmage”: or feminist collage, was defined by Miriam Schapiro and Melissa Meyer as an activity “practiced by women using traditional women\u27s techniques to achieve their art”. In keeping with feminist ideals, their definition celebrates rather than denigrates qualities long associated with women\u27s creativity: the personal, the collective, the decorative* Re-fashioning the Working Woman, an artistic body of work, calls out the hindrances that uniforms have imposed, undermining feminine identities, aesthetics, experiences, and empowerment. Looking to the Pattern and Decoration art movement for inspiration, my body of artwork reflects a plethora of themes that developed from this movement, including femininity, individuality, women\u27s work and labor, and domestic crafts, which contrast to larger cultural constructs including corporate America, mainstream aesthetics, and the fashion industry. Across this body of work, I employ mixed media strategies to subvert the uniform\u27s oppressive confines. By modifying borrowed uniforms through screenprinting, fabrics, sewing, and photography, I aim to better represent the individual behind the brand. This body of art is pieced together with these various elements, creating a collage - or femmage - that expresses the identities and viewpoints of women in the workforce. Through these feminist themes and imagery, Re-fashioning the Working Woman confronts the connotations surrounding uniformed females in a stigmatized society

HOW FISH DECORATE: COLOR PREFERENCE IN HETERANDRIA FORMOSA

    No full text
Environmental enrichment is the intentional addition of stimuli to an animal’s environment to provide necessary stimulation for optimal psychological and physiological well-being. This has been studied across taxa, but there is significantly less research on enrichment in fish. The current experiment looked into differences in how the least killifish (Heterandria formosa) interact with enrichment based on color. Preferences between colors can aid in determining potential care standards. This experiment utilized four colors of yarn mops, green, brown, white, and pink, to represent common colors in home aquaria. A preference between these colors was determined based on how many fish were interacting with each color for what amount of time over twenty-five days. This study has shown that the most preferred enrichment colors, based on H. formosa behavior, are pink and brown. Color is a small part of enrichment, but it can make a big difference in its effects. The preference for pink and brown in H. formosa suggests that this color can promote well-being through lowering stress and promoting natural behaviors

PROBING ALOPECIA AREATA: JAK-STAT DYSREGULATION AND IMMUNO-EPIGENETIC, NEUROENDOCRINE, PHARMACOLOGICAL, AND BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL COMPLEXITIES IN AUTOIMMUNE PATHOGENESIS

    No full text
Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disorder in which hair is lost abruptly because the immune system damages hair follicles. In this thesis, I will first review the epidemiology and biology of the disorder and will then discuss the therapeutic potential of JAK-STAT pathway inhibition for AA and the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of JAK inhibitors, in particular Ruxolitinib. The Janus kinase/signal transducer/activator of transcription JAK-STAT pathway is a major driver of immune and inflammatory response, and its dysregulation contributes to AA. Ruxolitinib, by preventing JAK’s activity, reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines, allowing restoration of immune privilege in hair follicles and regenerating hair. The pharmacokinetics of Ruxolitinib, including its absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, is reviewed herein. In addition, this thesis focuses on the biopsychological nature of AA, including the impact of stress and hormone dysregulation on the course of the disease. The role of androgens, thyroid hormones, and the HPA axis in AA are discussed, and the importance of an integrated approach to treatment. Combining drugs with psychological interventions and lifestyle changes can boost treatment efficacy. It is an integrated approach that works to address the complexities of AA and aims to provide patients with higher quality of life through specific therapy and interventio
