ANXIOUS FLESH, DIVINE MACHINES The Body as a Canvas for Technology

    No full text
What remains of humans when we merge with machines? What is lost—and what is gained? I will examine the intersection between human and modern technology through a series of figurative paintings, prints and collages. Inspired by the critiques of Byung-Chul Han and the fiction of J.G. Ballard, the themes of alienation, hyper-connectivity, and the erosion of human agency are at the core of my works, I look at how technology has reprogrammed us, our bodies, or actions, our feelings and how this paradigm shift has influenced my artworks. Visually, I am interested in distorted depictions of human bodies; I draw inspiration from surrealism, as well as the works of David Cronenberg, Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kruger. Through distortions, I underscore the vulnerability and ever-changing nature of the human body

WHO WE DON’T SEE: PATERNAL KINSHIP IN ADOPTION

    No full text
The topic of this research is discovering what defines the connection between adopted people and their biological fathers due to the lack of research regarding that perspective. The research was conducted through repeated in-depth interviews online and in person. The subjects that are addressed here involve the intersection between adoptees\u27 gender and adoptive identity, biases held within the adoptive household, and negative biases towards their countries of origin. These topics assist in understanding the kinship found, or not found, between the participants and their biological fathers. Two frameworks are also presented here, deemed the Adoptive Environment Bias and the Motherland Paradox. Other themes that present themselves involve how the adoptees view their ethnicities, culture, birth givers, and adoptive parents, and how that leads to the dismissal or rejection of the biological father. All of these characteristics amass as the participants\u27 perceptions and connections to the biological father are uncovered
