    Hierarchical linear modeling for determining the effect of ICT literacy on mathematics achievement

    This study aims to identify the effect of ICT literacy on mathematics achievement in grade 8 by using the Indonesian Student Competency Assessment\u27s (Asesmen Kompetensi Siswa Indonesia or AKSI) 2019 questionnaire data. A multistage probability sample of 13,079 students was analyzed using a two-level hierarchical linear model (HLM) which student achievement scores are the first level laid in schools as the second level. The results of the analysis revealed that SES, the number of smartphones and computers that students have at home, the availability of ICT at home and school, the use of ICT for education, and perspective on the benefits of ICT in daily life have a positive influence on mathematics literacy achievement, while the easiness of access to the use of digital devices in schools has negative influence at the student level. At the school level, the high mathematics literacy achievement of students is influenced by the location of the school and the number of certified teachers. School accreditation and completeness of learning facilities in schools are not factors upon better students toward their mathematics literacy achievement. However, the interaction between the easiness of access to the use of digital devices in schools and the completeness of learning facilities in schools have an influence in increasing students\u27 mathematics literacy achievement. Based on the diversity component, it is known that the diversity of students\u27 mathematical literacy achievement explained by the student level and school-level variables are 33.24 and 0.18, respectively

    Empirical lecturers\u27 and students\u27 satisfaction assessment in e-learning systems based on the usage metrics

    Nowadays, in the pandemic of COVID-19, e-learning systems have been widely used to facilitate teaching and learning processes between lecturers and students. Assessing lecturers\u27 and students\u27 satisfaction with e-learning systems has become essential in improving the quality of education for higher learning institutions. Most existing approaches have attempted to assess users\u27 satisfaction based on System Usability Scale (SUS). On the other hand, different studies proposed usage-based metrics (completion rate, task duration, and mouse or cursor distance) which assess users\u27 satisfaction based on how they use and interact with the system. However, the cursor or mouse distance metric does not consider the effectiveness of navigation in e-learning systems, and such approaches measure either lecturers\u27 or students\u27 satisfaction independently. Towards this end, we propose a lostness metric to replace the click or cursor distance metric for assessing lecturers\u27 and students\u27 satisfaction with using e-learning systems. Furthermore, to obtain a deep analysis of users\u27 satisfaction, we tandem the usage-based metric (i.e., completion rate, task duration, and lostness) and the SUS metric. The evaluation results indicate that the proposed approach can precisely predict users\u27 satisfaction with e-learning systems

    Character education strengthening model during learning from home: Ki Hajar Dewantara\u27s scaffolding concept

    In providing educational and learning services to students during the Covid-19 Pandemic, learning is carried out from home. The disparity in learning achievements, especially related to attitude competencies, is strongly experienced during learning from home. This study aims to integrate attitude values through learning with Ki Hajar Dewantara\u27s scaffolding concept: Identifying, Imitating, Developing, Dissemi-nating. This scaffolding is applied to strengthen the character of junior high school students in Yogyakarta Special Region to become Pancasila students. This is a research and development study that applies a qualitative approach. The respondents of this study were teachers, principals, students, parents, and supervisors of junior high schools in this province. Data were collected using focus group discussion, interview, and observation, then were analyzed using Miles and Huberman models, which comprised data reduction, data display, and inference stages. The results of this study is a character education strengthening model during learning from home applying Ki Hajar Dewantara\u27s scaffolding concept. This model contributes to the policymaking of character education strengthening during the learning from home online

    The relationship between education level, retirement status, and civic engagement among older adults in Indonesia

    The Indonesian population is aging very rapidly and as the number of old people increases, the number of retirees increases as well. Many scholars have argued the benefits of civic engagement in old age, but there is lack of empirical evidence of the factors associated with civic engagement in Indonesia. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between education levels, retirement status, and civic engagement among older adults in Indonesia. The study used data from the fifth wave of the Indonesia Family and Life Survey which was held in late 2014 and early 2015. The study included participants aged 56 years and older, the mandatory age for retirement in 2014 in Indonesia. Multiple regression was modelled for data analysis. The main results revealed that those who completed junior and senior high school and high education exhibited more civic engagement than those who completed only primary education. Moreover, the study found that those who were retired were less engaged in civic activities than those still in labor force. These relationships held true even after controlling for gender, age, marital status, personality traits, religiosity, and self-rated health variables. To strengthen democracy and growth, education needs to be re-emphasized and there is need for further investigation concerning retirement and civic engagement in Indonesia

    The influence of the Jigsaw learning model on mutual respect attitudes for grade VIII junior high school students

    This study aims to determine the effect of the use of Jigsaw learning model on mutual respect in grade VIII junior high school students. The study population consisted of 3 classes totaling 72 students. The sample of this research is class VIII students, amounting to 23 students. The determination of the sample class of this study was carried out using random sampling techniques. The research data were obtained through the distribution of pre-test and post-test in which validity were tested using the product moment formula. Research data were analyzed using quantitative techniques through independent sample t-test. The results showed that the use of the Jigsaw learning model had a significant effect on the mutual respect of students in the eighth grade. The results of this study can be a reference for education practitioners and related parties in an effort to instill mutual respect for students in schools, especially in the learning process.These findings can be further research material to find models, methods, or media that can be used by education practitioners and related parties for character education in schools

    Nationalist character at Muhammadiyah school

    One of the ways to strengthen nationalist character values is through formal education, including in Muhammadiyah schools. The practice needs strengthening in Muhammadiyah schools for deviations in student behavior that do not reflect the values of nationalist character. This article attempts to provide an overview of strengthening the values of nationalist characters through Muhammadiyah school culture. The research method used is qualitative research. The focus of the object in this study is strengthening the value of nationalist character for students in Muhammadiyah schools. The steps of data analysis using data reduction models, data presentation, conclusions. The study results show that there are several school programs to instill the values of nationalist character through school culture, among others, through learning in the classroom and habituation outside the classroom, among others, through extracurricular activities. The supporting factor is that the school establishes with the parties to run the program. The inhibiting factor is that some students are still not optimal in participating in a school program

    Teacher\u27s Need in the Continuing Professional Development Program for Teachers of Vocational High School throughout Surakarta Residency

    This research aimed to identify the activities needed by teachers in holding the Continuing Professional Development Program. This research employed survey type of non-experimental quantitative research method. This type of research was used when the author wants to find out the population\u27s opinion by conducting a study on the sample of population. The population of research consisted of all teachers of Vocational High School in Business and Management field in Surakarta City Residency. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Techniques of collecting data were observation, interview, documentation, and questionnaire. Quantitative data obtained was the one processed using Microsoft Excel with the scale specified by the author, while qualitative data was analyzed using triangulation technique. The result of research showed that Program Continuing Professional Development had been conducted despite different proportion for self-development, scientific publication, and innovative work.     Abstrak: Keterampilan menulis materi ajar perlu dilatihkan kepada mahasiswa calon guru selama masa studinya. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan stategi menulis materi ajar multimodus representasi. Dengan menerapkan strategi tertentu diharapkan mahasiswa calon guru fisika meningkat dalam hal keterampilan menulis materi ajar fisika yang di dalamnya menyajikan gabungan dua atau lebih modus representasi. Metoda yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metoda penelitian dan pengembangan (Research and Development Methods). Tahap-tahap yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini meliputi studi pendahuluan, perencanaan, mengembangkan rancangan strategi pembelajaran, ujicoba pendahuluan, merevisi produk dan ujicoba utama. Dengan menggunakan metode R & D telah dikembangkan strategi menulis materi ajar multimodus representasi yaitu Triple Step Writing Strategy (TS-WS). Ujicoba pendahuluan (pleriminary field testing) menggunakan metode pre-experiment desain the one group pretest-posttest design. Ujicoba utama (main field testing) menggunakan metode quasi-expeiment desain randomized pretest-posttest control group design. TS-WS sudah diujicobakan pada mahasiswa calon guru fisika yang berusia rata-rata 21 tahun pada sebuah LPTK di Bandung. Ujicoba pendahuluan melibatkan 15 mahasiswa calon guru fisika dan ujicoba utama 45 mahasiswa calon guru fisika. Untuk mengukur keterampilan menulis materi ajar multimodus representasi mahasiswa ditugaskan untuk menulis materi ajar multimodus representasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa TS-WS efektif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis materi ajar multimodus representasi mahasiswa calon guru fisika. Triple step writing strategy: Improving multimode representation teaching material writing skills of preservice physics teacher Abstract: Writing teaching material skills need to be taught to the preservice teachers during their studies. This study aims to develop strategies to write multiple modes of representations teaching materials. By implementing these strategies, it is expected that preservice physics teachers are able to write physics teaching materials that present a combination of two or more modes of representation. The method used in this research is Research and Development (R & D) method. The stages of R & D methods carried out in this study include research and information collecting activities, planning activities, developing learning strategy designs, preliminary field testing, main product revision, and main field testing. Using the R & D method, a strategy has been developed to improve writing teaching material skills. Preliminary field testing used the one-group pretest-posttest design pre-experiment method. Main field testing used a quasi-experiment design randomized pretest-posttest control group design method. The strategies have been tested on preservice physics teachers who were on average 21 years old at an LPTK in Bandung. The preliminary field testing involved 15 preservice physics teachers and the main field testing was 45 preservice physics teachers. To measure the skills of writing multiple modes of representation teaching materials students are assigned to write multimodal representation teaching materials. The results showed that TS-WS was effective in improving the skill of writing multimodal representations of teaching materials for pre-service physics teachers

    Pengembangan perangkat e-learning materi gerak melingkar menggunakan LMS chamilo

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh perangkat e-learning materi gerak melingkar menggunakan Learning Management System Chamilo yang valid, praktis dan efektif untuk pembelajaran fisika materi gerak melingkar. Subjek penelitian yaitu peserta didik kelas X SMA Negeri 1 Banyuasin 1. Metode penelitian pengembangan menggunakan model Alessi dan Trollip terbagi dalam tiga tahapan yakni tahap perencanaan, tahap desain, dan tahap pengembangan. Pembuktian validasi dalam studi ini terdiri dari media, konten, dan desain pembelajaran. Hasil validasi menunjukan bahwa perangkat e-learning sudah valid dan layak untuk diuji cobakan. Uji kepraktiksan berdasarkan penilaian dari sudut pandang peserta didik menunjukan bahwa media yang dikembangkan memiliki kepraktisan sebesar 88,10%. Uji efektivitas diperoleh penilaian melalui N-gain sebesar 0,627 dengan kategori sedang. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini diperoleh hasil bahwa perangkat e-learning mempunyai nilai valid, praktis, dan efektif digunakan dalam pembelajaran fisika materi gerak melingkar. Development of e-learning for circular motion topics using LMS Chamilo Abstract: This research is aimed to obtain a valid, practise, and effective e-learning media for learning circular motion topics using Chamilo\u27s Learning Management System. The subjects of this study was students of science class in Senior High School in Banyuasin 1. The research method used in this research is development research using the Alessi and Trollip development model which consists of three stages, namely the planning stage, design stage, and development stage. Validation in this study includes media, content, and learning design. Based on the results of validation, the media was valid and feasible to be tested. The practicality test in accordance with students\u27 feedback on the media show that the developed media has a practicality of 88.10%. The effectiveness of media was proved through N-gain score of 0.627 with a moderate category. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the e-learning device that has been developed has valid, practical, and effective value against the learning of circular motion matter physics in SMA Negeri 1 Banyuasin 1

    Swimming training on moderate intensity significantly reduces total cholesterol and bodyweight on hypercholesterolemic rat model

    It is well established that regular exercise has many positive benefits on health. Exercise at the appropriate intensity and level has been shown to improve lipid profile and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study investigates the effect of swimming training on total cholesterol levels and body weight in male Wistar rats. Thirty rats weighing 150-200 grams were randomly divided into one control (C) and two treatment groups (ST=swimming training, SED=sedentary activity). Rats in control (C) group were fed a standard diet, while rats in both treatment groups were fed high-fat diet-induced hypercholesterolemia for three weeks. Rats in ST were then swim-trained at moderate intensity for 30 minutes/day, six days a week for three weeks, and rats in SED were left without exercise stimuli. Body weight was measured weekly. At the end of the experimental period, intracardiac blood samples were drawn to measure the total cholesterol level. Findings revealed that rats\u27 bodyweight (p=0,045) and blood cholesterol (p=0,034) in ST group were significantly lower compared to SED. It indicates that swimming exercise is shown to be effective in weight loss and reducing blood cholesterol level in hypercholesterolemic rats
