Capturing Magic: Recording Emily Lubitz’s Two Black Horses at Mix Artist Studio – A Reflective Case Study in Contemporary Recording Practice
This paper reflects on the recording of Emily Lubitz’s album Two Black Horses at Mix Artist Studio in early 2024. It outlines how I applied my core engineering values, technical precision, sensitivity to the musicians’ needs, and anticipatory readiness, to capture the energy of a live band with high acoustic separation. Beyond the technical aspects, it demonstrates how ongoing studio practice directly informs and enhances my teaching, keeping lessons current and relevant. The aim is to connect industry experience with teaching practice, showing how staying active in the field strengthens classroom delivery
Rockpool
Rockpool is a 2.5D, family-friendly narrative game set in an Australian rockpool. Players care for a small community of hermit crabs who carry their homes on their backs, helping them recover and reconnect after a storm. Through gentle exploration and drag-and-drop interactions—feeding preferences, swapping homes, and collecting treasures—players respond to each crab’s personality and emotional cues. The design encourages conversations about resilience, emotional regulation, and belonging, with minimal text and clear audio/visual feedback so children (5–12) can play independently or alongside a parent or older sibling. Developed in Unity by a small multidisciplinary team, the project combines bespoke character animation, ambient sound design, and a lightweight UI. A community “chuffed compass” reflects overall wellbeing and guides player decisions without heavy instruction. The aim is a calm, replayable experience that feels like a picture book you can play, offering a comforting shared play space for young families. The submission includes a playable build and supporting documentation (GDD, itch page, target market research, instagram marketing page and inital pitch
Identity Entanglement in Transnational Body Horror Cinema
This paper will examine Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance (2024) within the context of transnational body horror films, arguing that its power lies in its ability to entangle audiences in themes of identity fragmentation. The Substance, echoing work by filmmakers including David Cronenberg, Pedro Almodóvar, and Takashi Miike, depicts the disturbing erosion of self through visceral transformations and psychological disintegration. By analysing Fargeat’s

recent film alongside earlier films such as Videodrome (1983), The Skin I Live In (2011), and Audition (1999), this paper demonstrates how body horror, despite diverse origins, shares a preoccupation with blurring self/other boundaries. Drawing on Blasi’s (2019) application of entanglement theory to film studies, emphasising active viewer engagement over passive observation, this paper explores how body horror’s psychological techniques – paranoia, unease, and distorted realities – entangle viewers in characters’ experiences. The transnational appeal stems from its ability to evoke universal anxieties about identity loss. The Substance reconfigures these anxieties within a Hollywood context of beauty standards, demonstrating how body horror transcends national borders. This examination reveals the genre’s global significance, highlighting its capacity to connect audiences through shared psychological experiences within an increasingly interconnected cinematic landscape
