Using digital archaeology and machine learning to determine sex in finger flutings
One of the earliest and most enigmatic forms of rock art are finger flutings. Previous methods of studying them relied on biometric finger ratios from modern populations to make assumptions about the people who left the flutings—an approach that is both theoretically and methodologically problematic. This study presents a proof-of-concept for a paradigm shift away from error-prone human measurements and controversial theories, toward computational digital archaeology methods using an innovative experimental design that integrates tactile, virtual, and machine learning approaches. We conducted a digital archaeology experiment using tactile and virtual samples from 96 participants. A machine learning model was trained on this known dataset to determine the sex of the individuals who made the flutings. While the virtual dataset lacked sufficiently distinct features for reliable sex classification, the tactile experiment showed promising potential for identifying the sex of fluting artists. However, a larger sample size is needed to support generalization. The significant contribution of this study is the development of a foundational set of methods and materials. We offer a novel digital archaeology framework for data creation, collection, and analysis that is replicable, scalable, and quantifiable
Prakrithi Hai Tho Pragati Hai - Progress Alongside Nature
Prakriti Hai Toh Pragati Hai is a short VFX-driven film that explores humanity’s fragile relationship with nature and the devastating consequences of its exploitation
CIM250.1 International Study Tour Example 2
An experience plan proposal for the International Study Tour to Berlin in 25T1
DDX219.2 Social Media Content Creation Example 2
This project involved creating a cohesive suite of social media content tailored to the student’s chosen creative project. The work is exemplary for its consistent visual style, platform-specific content design, and alignment with the strategic goals defined earlier. Additionally, the student demonstrated strong collaborative skills by providing thoughtful, constructive feedback to peers, reflecting both creative and professional growth
Songs for Dead Sailors
Songs for Dead Sailors is a psychological exploration of love and loss in the era of tall ships; a song cycle about leaving a home and loved ones, to journey with no promise of a return. The work was scored for a sextet of improvising musicians and reflects my interest in the creative process and my experiences teaching creative practice research. It was written for the specific group of jazz musicians that you hear on this recording, with their particular instrumental talents and styles very much in mind. The work provides challenges to the players, drawing as it does on a number of other traditions and music practices. Its use of tuplets (polyrhythm) is more in line with new ‘classical’ music, the instrumentation is akin to orchestral composition practices, and rhythmically, it draws from South Indian (Carnatic) music. The work is also a song cycle, and the musicians are asked to contribute in line with the continuing narrative and compositional structure. The album was produced by Ned Friedman, recorded by Enrico LeMura at The Hive, and mixed and mastered by Marly Lüske at SAE Brisbane and Alchemy
\u27What the world would be\u27: how creating a shared world through collaborative roleplaying helps us to deal with real-world challenges
This article is in two parts: a creative prose artefact, and a critical exegesis situating the artefact in a wider context. It illustrates how roleplaying games explore community and identity, through a creative / critical lens. A prose dramatisation of a cooperative TTRPG (table top roleplaying game) session, played online over Discord and online gaming platform Roll20, juxtaposes the collaboratively imagined world, and the reality from which it is an escape. Themes of gender identity, isolation, precarious work and fluctuating health are explored within the timeframe of the Covid outbreak in Adelaide mid-2020, with the roleplaying session serving as a respite from insecure work and health challenges, while supporting creative agency and the expression of meaningful selfhood through collaborative play and problem-solving. This reflects a broader phenomenon of the increased popularity of online TTRPGS since Covid, and how they can serve as bulwarks against isolation, may assist in safely expressing and navigating gender identity, and act as an inclusive space for those living with an impairment (temporary or long term). The benefits of collaborative roleplay through TTRPGs in higher education, including support of neurodiverse, non-binary and non-traditional learners, are also discussed
Artwork from animation (ANI216 Animation Studio)
A series of pen and ink and photograph collages inspired by my teaching and the scene I created as part of the ANI216 Animation Studio group project. These were made as a response to the invitation to exhibit 3 artworks in a group exhibition. They were all subsequently sold
Music portfolio: Berd Shert Vol. 3
Berd Shert is an ongoing solo music production project aimed at development of music production skills, music composition skills, and sound engineering. As trends in creative media education have changed over the years, there has been a shift from a focus on sound engineering more towards music composition and production. Berd Shert became a project to develop critical skills required for teaching music composition and music production using modern DAW software and related technologies. This project also enabled the exploration of advanced music theory concepts and digital production techniques whilst still aiming to produce a body of work that is musically accessible.
On the distribution platform Bandcamp, the Berd Shert listing indicates a carefree and whimsical approach to music making, whereas in reality the process was much more intentional. The result of this project is an eclectic mix of tracks that may not come across as a cohesive playlist, but more broadly achieve the goals of developing a diverse range of skills and techniques. Despite the diversity of the tracks in this album, the overarching theme is to create a sense of ‘real’ sounds and performances from what would otherwise be mainly synthetic and sampled content.
Exploring composition and production skills impacted teaching and facilitation through the use of real world examples, having a range of musical styles that can appeal to a range of students, and ongoing use of music and audio related software
