The Role of Technology in Expanding Conducting Practice and its Aesthetic Implications
This presentation explores the expansion of practice in conducting with a focus on technology, interdisciplinary practice, and its implications for aesthetics. Technology continues to evolve in musical and composition practice leading to a transformation in ensemble and music aesthetics over the next century, therefore, it is relevant to ask – how might the practice of conducting change and expand in the 21st Century? Key questions include how technology influences conducting gestures and how to ensure it serves musical expression and conducting practice versus creating a performance distraction.
Through iterative experimentation and collaboration with composers and performers, this project reveals that integrating technology can expand conducting practices offering innovative gestural aesthetics and sonic outcomes, however there is a limit that should not be crossed, and therefore a need for discussion on perceived liminality. The findings suggest that while technology can expand the possibilities for conductors, it is crucial to maintain a balance and critically examine the boundaries of its integration to preserve the essence of the art form of conducting
Beyond The Path
In modern society, there has been an increase in issues of stress and a loss of guidance in young adults, who are struggling to find their own identity and path. These challenges are inevitable in life and can be seen as a common human experience, which can be linked to the classic framework of a Hero’s Journey, first explored by Joseph Campbell. It’s the journey that every individual faces when confronting the hardships and challenges of life that helps humanity grow and persevere through any obstacle.
In our Project, “Beyond the Path”, we highlight how the themes and stages of the Hero’s Journey reflect the internal and external challenges faced by many in society. With our focus on using 2D Animation as a medium, we aim to appeal to and create a sense of connection between the audience and the protagonist of our animation through facial expressions and body language. Initially refusing the call to adventure, an integral part of the Hero’s Journey, our character gathers the will and spirit to overcome his obstacles to save someone’s life.
This connection allows the audience to relate our animation’s story to their journey of change and growth. Our goal is to inspire the audience to view their life from a new perspective, recognising that they are living a Hero’s Journey. We want them to see obstacles they encounter as a chance for growth so that they can gain guidance and meaning in their lives once they overcome them. This is especially crucial in a time
Orchestrating Brilliance In The Recording Studio: Mixing Music To Record Music
This paper is a report on a heuristic inquiry into music recording practice and workflow to arrive at the essence of experience. Through professional reflection on a music recording, we investigated the recording process and student experience; this was used to identify, explore and expose tacit professional practice. The central theme that unfolded revealed benefits in mixing music during a recording session. Other themes of workflow efficiency, and emotional expression, also emerged from the data collection. The research culminated in a creative synthesis in the form of a research question: Can live studio recordings be a viable option for artists, record companies and the music industry? This creative synthesis held great value for the researchers and opens investigation into the possible benefits of live studio recordings and completing the final product at the time of recording
A Disruptive Innovation: Teaching Students to Take Risks in the Creative Industries
This article addresses the reluctance of creative industries students to embrace risk in their critical analyses and creative projects, often leading to formulaic work. Drawing on pedagogical reflections, it outlines the introduction of a revised project structure, \u27The Disruptive Innovation,\u27 designed to deliberately encourage students to reach beyond their creative comfort zones. This new structure asks students to intentionally disrupt and transform their initial, \u27safe\u27 creative work. By applying flow theory and shifting assessment emphasis toward the documented process of experimentation rather than the final product, the approach aims to build resilience against anxieties about failure. This pedagogical shift seeks to cultivate the innovative spirit and adaptability essential for navigating the dynamic and often unpredictable realities of the creative industries
