Slow Down. A Sound (e)scape. A Sound idea for Life
What are the possibilities of 360 audio to enhance the benefits of sound and music? This paper and its accompanying audio piece explores the potential deepening of immersion through adding an attentional element via movement to the sounds and music in an audio soundscape. The paper will argue through literature review and reflection, and demonstrate through its audio content, that adding this spatial element to audio material gives the brain additional attentional anchors to follow and assists in deepening immersion as a result. Why does immersion matter? Listening to music has multiple effects on the structural and functional arrangement of brain circuitry and new insights reveal that music therapy as a non-pharmacological intervention can assist with cognitive decline and to alleviate the symptoms of severe illnesses. Music is now known to change the chemistry of the brain, it evokes an emotional response, triggers memories and may lead to positive long term changes in brain neuroplasticity (Speranza, 2022, p. 796) . If a listening experience can have beneficial implications physically, mentally and emotionally then the more immersed in that experience one is the more potential benefit there could be

Connecting through stories: The power of digital narratives
As the creator behind this project, I, Adam Rawson, draw from my Scottish heritage and a rich tapestry of experiences. With a background rooted in Media Arts and Productions, my journey spans across an array of professional roles, including documentary directing and filmmaking. My multifaceted expertise extends into the realm of composition and music production, adding depth and resonance to my creative endeavours.
Through the power of multimedia and interactive storytelling, this project weaves together digital storytelling techniques, including animation, multimedia platforms, and interactive elements, to create a cohesive, immersive, and compelling narrative. At its core, this narrative is centred around the journey to recover a stolen family heirloom, transcending this singular event to explore universal themes like identity, family bonds, and historical events.
Employing a unique practice-led, digital storytelling, and autoethnographic approach as a research method, this project provides an introspective and authentic perspective that enhances the storytelling process. Using an agile practice-led approach, the project gathers new data from family as well as the audience, allowing the opportunity to test, try, and continue iterations as new information is collected, thus enabling the audience to connect with the story on a more personal level.
By employing a practice-oriented digital storytelling method, this project emotionally engages audiences beyond geographical boundaries, fostering a deeper connection with the narrative and its themes
Interactive Sculpture/Audio Installation - World Tree Melody - World Science Festival (Queensland Museum)
World Tree Melody is an interactive sculptural and sonic installation by Guy Cooper, exhibited at the World Science Festival Brisbane (Queensland Museum) in 2023. This work explores the fusion of creative technologies and public art through motion-activated sound, custom Arduino programming, multi-channel audio sampling, and evolving music composition. Visitors become active participants in the work, triggering a generative soundscape through physical interaction with the sculpture.
Constructed from copper pipe, hand-crafted leaves, and an organic tree core, the piece is powered by two Arduino microcontrollers, four motion sensors, and seven-channel 24-bit/48kHz audio samplers. Over 400 lines of custom code manage a library of more than eight hours of original sound, composed by Cooper and incorporating field recordings from the Gold Coast, synthetic textures, and voice samples recorded with students at Calliope State School. The resulting sonic landscape responds in real time to the movement and presence of the audience, turning each interaction into a unique musical event.
Set in a speculative future where Earth\u27s ecosystems have collapsed, World Tree Melody imagines a surviving tree dependent on human interaction and technology for its ongoing function—a metaphorical life-support system driven by symbiosis between people, nature, and machines. The work invites reflection on climate collapse, ecological stewardship, and the emotional and technological relationships we form with the living world.
The sculpture also produced an 8-track companion album, available on Spotify, extending its life beyond the installation space and reinforcing the evolving relationship between audience and sound. This project continues Cooper\u27s work as an award-winning professional sculptor and creative technologist, and draws from his academic foundation in a Master of Creative Industries. It stands as a synthesis of artistic practice, environmental storytelling, and interactive design—bridging music, sculpture, and emerging technology
