From Stage to Screen: the enduring influence of Commedia dell\u27Arte.
No full textThis presentation discusses how the principles of Commedia dell’Arte (henceforth Commedia), a vibrant 16th century Italian theatre form, have seamlessly transitioned into film, leaving an enduring impact on the silver screen.
During the silent film era, renowned stars Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton showcased Commedia through their exaggerated physicality and gestures, inspired by iconic characters such as Arlecchino and Pierrot. The frantic pace and chaotic energy in Keystone comedies also echoed the Commedia spirit, with improvisation and slapstick the key to provoking laughter (Scheide, 2012).
The popularity of \u27Rom-Coms\u27 overtime can be attributed to its use of Commedia\u27s archetypal characters, narrative structures, and themes where love triumphs over worldly troubles and personal challenges. Further, the intricate character dynamics and humorous plot twists of Commedia continue to captivate global audiences today, often without their awareness. In films like The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Meryl Streep\u27s portrayal of Miranda Priestly embodies traits akin to the domineering and authoritative La Signora, while Stanley Tucci\u27s character, Nigel, channels the flamboyant and witty spirit of the first servant, Pedrolino (Di Niro, 2021).
Whether overt or subtle, the principles of Commedia continue to shape and enrich cinematic storytelling, bridging the gap between historical theatrical traditions and modern cinema

Seeking the unspoken: Examining queer subtext in storytelling
No full textThis exegesis aims to examine the techniques of subtext that are used to determine creative decisions in narrative structures on various forms of fictional screen media with a specific focus on storytelling in an animation context and the creative mediums used to form it. The major focus of subtextual storytelling that is investigated during this exegesis is the themes and narratives used throughout the LGBTQ+ community and the diversity of its influences upon hidden signs within stories, which was studied through the process of creating the foundation of a short film with the use of methodological approaches such as practice-led research, semiotic analysis and reflective practice. Knock on Wood is the name of the creative project that this exegesis is structured on, being the product of numerous creative mediums, actor collaborations and research into subtext of queer contexts in order to be animated and released to audiences at a later date. The focus of the creative project was to analyse the variety of methods humans use to insert queer subtext into fictional stories, then attempt to create an animated film while weaving in a subtextual story which involved deep reflection into my own identity as queer individual. At its core, this exegesis analyses the ways in which queer subtext presents itself as a deeply human story
