Synthesis and Structure Characterization of Novel Lanthanide (III) – Cyclen Complexes Bearing Phenolate Arms
1,4,7,10-Tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) and its derivatives play a critical role in biomedical applications, particularly in medical imaging and the synthesis of stable metal complexes. This study focuses on the synthesis and structural characterization of novel cyclen-based tetraphenolate derivatives and their corresponding lanthanide(III) complexes. Cyclen was synthesized via a single-pot process involving the reaction of triethylenetetramine with glyoxal, followed by alkylation with a 1,2-difunctionalized alkylating agent. The resulting compounds were characterized using various spectroscopic techniques, including IR, 1 H-NMR, and ESI-MS, as well as single X-ray crystallography. The study highlights the versatile coordination chemistry of lanthanide(III) ions, demonstrating their ability to form stable complexes with cyclen-derived ligands. These findings contribute to the development of novel contrast agents for medical imaging and potential anticancer therapeutics, leveraging the strong binding affinity, low toxicity, and structural versatility of cyclen-based ligands
