Food or Fairness? An Ultimatum Game Concerning A College Student’s Budget
No full textThe influence of personal establishment and satisfaction has been the theoretical influence underlying conventional economics since proposed by Adam Smith. Results from many previous ultimatum experiments, which dictate that both parties must mutually agree on an ultimatum in order to win the game, often contradict the theories and ideals presented by conventional economic models. In this replication of the ultimatum experiment, instead of a minimal amount of $10 as the evaluating increment as used by past experiments, we have examined college students’ allocation decisions when presented the estimated cost of food for an entire month. This data will then be compared to traditional experiments to determine if students continue to value the social perceived characteristic of fairness when offered a financially significant amount of money
The Carceral State of American Schools: The Impact of Symbolic Threat of Public School Policy
No full textThe fear of violence in schools has compelled school systems to use a variety of authoritarian methods to control students\u27 behavior. This work seeks to understand why these methods of behavioral control are used in some schools but not in others. Using the school survey on crime and safety, the authors explore the extent that the behavioral control strategies at diverse schools are more reminiscent of correctional facilities than institutions of learning. This analysis offers a nuanced view of the carceral elements in schools, where student body diversity is linked to some aspects of the carceral state but not others. Previous research suggests that strategies that seek to nurture the minds of young people are giving way to practices that criminalize school discipline, with the latter more likely to be instituted in poor, majority-minority schools. The present analysis finds that other factors, which are non-diversity related, are associated with authoritarian forms of control in schools, and suggests that all students, not just Black and Latino kids, are experiencing carceral elements
Disjointed Cynicism
Get PDFLike most students, I started this writing MA program to become a better writer, which would be a tremendous benefit to me both personally and professionally. Put simply, I want to write books I would enjoy reading. While I have enjoyed a few of the short stories that I have written so far, my work is nowhere near the level of the action-lacked novels I love to read for leisure. I feel my biggest shortcoming is in framing up multiple storylines to make a well-paced novel, which is my long-term goal. My writing usually has a lot of action and violence, much like my preferred authors (e.g., Don Winslow, Donald Goines, James Cook)
THE TRANSFORMATION OF CHEROKEE MEDICIAL PRACTICES AND THE HESITATIONS THAT SURROUND THEM
Get PDFStudies on traditional Cherokee medicine during the 1800s explained Cherokee religious beliefs and the treatments they used to heal the members of their community. However, no updated research has been done to see if Cherokees are still using traditional medicine and if they are, which kinds are they using in the 21st century. This is in part due to the fact that Native Americans and the U.S. government have a complicated relationship from centuries of mistreatment, broken treaties, and the removal from their ancestral homelands. This has created a distrust between native and non-natives. Today, traditional healers\u27 identities are protected as they are important and sacred members of the community. This makes it difficult to know how many people are using traditional medicine, what is being treated with traditional medicine, and what are the beliefs surrounding traditional medicine. Political division between traditionalists and progressives among the Cherokee Nation has also made information on traditional medicine difficult to find as the former were wanting to continue in their traditional ways while the later wanted to assimilate into American culture and society. This divide has made it so certain members of the Cherokee Nation know more about traditional medicine than others. I argue that the Trail of Tears, the Civil War, allotment/statehood and the political divisions among the Cherokee Nation during these time periods created a distrust between natives and non-natives as well as created a divide in knowledge of traditional medicine, making it difficult to find information on it today
