The role of information on contentious firearm policy: in an examination of students attending a historically Black University
Get PDFFollowing highly publicized mass shootings on college campuses, more attention has been placed on making people feel safer at places of higher learning. In response, several states have passed campus carry policies, which permit conceal carry holders to carry their firearms on campus. Lawmakers have pursued these policies while ignoring the fact that most students and employees at college and universities are unsupportive of campus carry policies. The study aims to add to the campus carry literature by investigating the role of information concerning campus carry and its source of influence on support and perceptions of S.B. 11 amongst Black students. We find that the source of knowledge, previous knowledge, and perceptions of campus crime influence support for S.B. 11. We consider invoking transformative approaches to education in order to empower underserved constituents and hold policy makers accountable when developing contentious policy
Cross-Generational Effects of Workplace Spirituality on Employee Job and Life Satisfaction
No full textSince the 1990’s, the concept of workplace spirituality has grown in popularity.Contrary to the public notion of spirituality, workplace spirituality does not have much to dowith organized religion but more with the connectedness one has with other people at work.During the COVID-19 pandemic this sense of connectedness has waned, leaving employees witha lower attachment to their organizations. Workplace spirituality has been correlated withemployee job satisfaction, which impacts productivity, customer satisfaction, turnover, andultimately the firm’s bottom line. Job satisfaction also has an impact on one’s overall lifesatisfaction. Results of this study suggest that employee age may moderate the relationshipbetween workplace spirituality and employee job satisfaction. Specifically, Millennials may bemore likely than older generations to be satisfied with pay and promotion opportunities inorganizations where workplace spirituality is perceived to be high
Interdependence and Group Effectiveness in Entrepreneurial Ecosystems
No full textThis study examines the impact of interdependence on group effectiveness in entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs). Relying on survey data from 156 entrepreneurial support organizations (ESOs) throughout the United States, the study finds that goal interdependence fosters effectiveness in EEs. The study did not find any evidence in support of taskinterdependence as a precursor for group effectiveness. Specifically, a unit change in goal interdependence leads to a 0.18 unit change in EEs effectiveness measured on a 5-point Likert scale. Interestingly, while the study shows that older ESOs are less effective, those belonging to older ecosystems generate better outcomes for their members; for each year in an EEs, ESOs see a 0.13 increase in effectiveness but a 0.05 decrease in effectiveness for each year the ESOs exist outside an EEs. The study demonstrates how shared leadership theories can further our understanding of collaborative, decentralized ecosystems like entrepreneurial ecosystems and identify antecedents for their effectiveness. The findings provide implications for policymakers aiming to develop solid entrepreneurial ecosystems by underscoring the importance of shared goals and communication channels and facilitating new entrants and synergies between older and newer ESOs
Do you have to Attend to Succeed: Is there a Relationship between Class Attendance and Final Grades
No full textUniversity classes have a variety of assessments to determine if the students have learned the material. However, the researchers contend attendance is a strong predictor of class success. By comparing the number of absences and the final grade, statistically significant relationships were found. The variables of gender and academic major were also examined to ascertain if they are factors. Interesting conclusions were made as well as implications for practice
A Comparative Analysis of the Quality of Homicide Evidence Provided to Law Enforcement
Get PDFThe present study investigated the perceived quality of homicide evidence provided to law enforcement by the coroner versus medical examiner systems. Respondents (N=15) from county law enforcement agencies in three different Southeastern states that utilize either the coroner, medical examiner, or combination of both systems were presented with a 17-question virtual survey that included questions regarding personal background, educational background, employment history, knowledge of the medical examiner versus coroner systems, and personal experience with one or both systems involving homicide investigations. Participants who resided in the state that utilizes the medical examiner system reported mostly negative feedback regarding the collection, preservation, and recording of homicide-related evidence from their respective medical examiner. Furthermore, the feedback reported from participants who interacted with the coroner system was almost entirely positive. Given the size of the United States compared to the sample size of this study, more research is needed to better understand the overall differences in the quality of evidence provided to law enforcement by the coroner versus medical examiner systems
A Historical Analysis of Accounting Salaries as a Key Factor in the Staffing Crisis
No full textThe accounting profession is facing a staffing crisis. Addressing the causes for the decline in the number of accounting professionals and collegiate accounting majors is a multifaceted problem. To remain competitive and overcome the staffing shortage, the accounting profession must analyze the causes and make appropriate adjustments. To this point, in February 2023, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) issued a draft plan that tackles eight root causes that are negatively impacting the accounting talent pipeline. Interestingly, salary challenges are not included in the eight root causes examined by the AICPA’s plan. This article analyzes the history of accounting salaries as a possible contributing factor to the decline in the number of accounting professionals in the hiring pool. The analyses include a review of accounting salary trends for a 20-year period (2001-2021) and a state-by-state comparison of accounting salaries to salaries offered in similarly skilled professions. Nationally, the findings confirm an unfavorable trend in real-term median salary growth rates for accounting positions. On the state level, when comparing the 2021 accounting salaries to the salaries of similarly skilled professions, the accounting salaries, in all but a few cases, are lower. If slower salary growth rates and lower actual accounting salaries persist over time in comparison to similarly skilled professions, this will exacerbate the current staffing crisis as evenmore employees choose to leave the accounting profession for more lucrative external opportunities that increasingly offer better work/life balance (Ellis 2022; Iacone 2022). A further concern for the profession is the negative impact this salary deficit will have on the selectionprocess of incoming college students who may opt into better paying majors that do not require150 hours of college credits or a rigorous professional certification exam. Finally, the article concludes with recommendations for firms and the profession to stem turnover and create a robust talent pipeline into the accounting profession
The Impact of Live On-Campus Events on University Enrollments
No full textDue to declining college enrollment rates and intense competition to recruit students to attend one\u27s college or university, we must avoid the limitations of bounded awareness (i.e., wemust think outside the box) when marketing our institution. This paper examined a College of Business teaming up with University Admissions to host a live on-campus event targeted at high school juniors and seniors. The event allowed students to be involved hands-on with numerous competitions, networking events, and the potential to win scholarship monies. We investigated if experiences of this nature are effective tools to increase student interest and enrollment. This study used a quantitative methodology to investigate the research question. Research results indicated that an event of this nature has a positive impact on high school students with respect to their intention to pursue higher education upon graduating from high school
AI-Driven Diagnostic Tools: A Survey of Adoption and Outcomes in Global Healthcare Practices
