Calendula mother tincture vs normal saline for ulcer dressing as an add-on to Individualized Homoeopathic Intervention in the management of Diabetic Foot Ulcer: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study
Background: Despite standard management, healing rate of Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFUs) remains low, posing risk of lower extremity amputation. Objectives: This study was undertaken to evaluate if Calendula Q has added benefit over individualized homoeopathic intervention (IHI). The primary objective was to achieve complete epithelialisation within 20 weeks and secondary objective was to assess the changes in quality of life using DFU Scale-short form (DFU-SF) questionnaire. Materials and Methods: A randomised controlled pilot study with a 20-week intervention was conducted from 2014-2017. 277 cases were screened and 60 cases were enrolled and randomised to Group I: IHI + Calendula Q dressing (n= 30) and Group II: IHI + normal saline (NS) dressing (n = 30), along with standard conventional medication for glycaemic control. Results: The mean time (Group I= 12 weeks, Group II= 11 weeks) of ulcer healing in both groups showed no statistically significant difference, thus calendula Q used for dressing did not have any added benefits (p= 0.0521). Arsenicum album (n= 14, 23.3%), Lycopodium (n= 8, 13.3%), Silicea (n= 7, 11.7%), Sulphur (n= 6, 10%), Phosphorus (n= 5, 10%) and Sepia (n=5, 10%) were found to be effective medicines. Conclusion: IHI, along with wound hygiene and conventional diabetic management, proved to be effective, irrespective of whether Calendula Q or normal saline was used for wound hygiene, thus leading to early, complete epithelialisation of Wagner\u27s first and second stages of DFUs. Further studies comparing IHI with standard care are warranted
Efficacy of predefined homoeopathic medicines in the treatment of warts: Study protocol of double blind randomised placebo controlled trial
Background and Objectives: The literature cites a large number of homoeopathic medicines for the treatment of warts. Studies on warts are based on experiences of individual practitioners and do not give specific factors, which are responsible for making a successful prescription for the treatment of warts. The present study was designed as a multicentric randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate response to homoeopathic treatment for the disappearance or resolution of warts and to validate the symptoms of the pre-identified 09 drugs (Antimonium crudum, Calcarea carbonicum, Causticum, Dulcamara, Natrum muriaticum, Nitric acidicum, Ruta graveolens, Sulphur and Thuja occidentalis) on clinical outcome in warts. Materials and Methods: The study would be conducted at eight centres of the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, where patients requiring any of the predefined medicines for warts would be randomised to Homoeopathy or placebo group using a computer-generated randomisation chart. The selected medicine would be prescribed first in 6C potency and dosage and subsequent potency as per the requirement of the case. Outcome is based on the percentage of warts completely disappeared assessed fortnightly for 6 months. Discussion: The study intends to combine randomised controlled trial with validation of symptoms of the pre-identified drugs in warts. The symptoms of verum group in each case successfully treated would be compared with that in the control group. The study would aid in assessing treatment efficacy and identifying the symptomatology on the basis of which successful prescriptions have been made
Case of lumbar spondylosis treated with Homoeopathic medicine Calcarea fluorica
Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) is one of the most common problems with which people of all age groups report to physicians. It is a very troublesome complaint affecting day-to-day life, leading to decreased productivity. Amongst all the causes, lumbar spondylosis is one of the major causes of CLBP. Lumbar spondylosis commonly affects middle to later age groups. This case report describes patient with symptoms of recurrent pain in low back for the last 10 years. X-ray of the lumbosacral (L.S.) spine showed features of osteophyte confirming the diagnosis of lumbar spondylosis. After careful case-taking, homoeopathic medicine Calcarea fluorica in different potencies was prescribed as per homoeopathic principles with ever-increasing improvement. Pain in the low back gradually diminished. Ultimately, the patient got rid of all the symptoms with general improvement. After that, he was on placebo for 5 months. X-ray of the L.S spine done after treatment revealed no feature of lumbar spondylosis along with remission of osteophyte

Evidence- based homoeopathy: Case report of alopecia areata in an 11 year old boy
Introduction: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease characterised by non-scarring hair loss in single or multiple areas of the scalp. The disease affects hair on the head or other parts of the body. AA occurs in people of all ages and affects 1-2% of human population. Homoeopathic literature shows that cases of AA have been treated successfully with homoeopathic medicines. Case Summary: This is the case of an 11 years old boy with alopecia areata. The case presented here is documented from Dermatology clinic at Regional Research Institute of Homoeopathy at Gudivada, Andhra Pradesh. The patient was treated with individualised homoeopathic medicine over a period of 3 years. There was significant improvement with homoeopathic treatment, with complete disappearance of bald patches without any recurrence
A study protocol on comparative randomised controlled trial of Homoeopathy -vs- allopathy in acute otitis media and its recurrence in Children
Background: Acute otitis media (AOM) is one of the most common acute infections in children, and injudicious prescription of antibiotics may lead to increase of antibiotic-resistant cases. Homoeopathic treatment may provide a safer and more effective treatment. Objective: Earlier, a pilot study conducted by the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) on eighty patients at a single centre showed non-inferiority results. This study shall be undertaken to substantiate the earlier findings. Methods: This will be an open-label, non-inferiority, randomised controlled (parallel arm) trial to be conducted on children in the age group of 2–12 years, suffering from AOM. The trial will include 240 children; each participant shall be randomly selected to receive either individualised homoeopathic medicine or symptomatic allopathic medicine. In case a child does not have ≥50% improvement with assigned treatment on day 3, he/she shall be given antibiotics. Children shall be treated/followed up for a period of 1 year to check recurrence, if any, in both the groups. The primary outcomes are changes in the Tympanic Membrane Examination Scale and Acute Otitis Media-Severity of Symptoms scale, time to improvement in pain through the Facial Pain Scale-Revised between the groups and recurrence (number of episodes, intensity and duration) of AOM between the groups at 1 year. Discussion: The study will consolidate the findings observed during a pilot study conducted by the CCRH at Jaipur, India. It is proposed to compare the role of individualised homoeopathy over allopathy in the treatment of AOM and to assess its role in controlling the recurrence
Homoeopathic treatment of hepatic haemangioma with ovarian cyst
Introduction: This is a case of multimorbidity in a 35-year-old patient suffering from hepatic hemagioma with ovarian cyst. There was hepatomegaly with multiple well-defined homogenously echogenic nodular lesion (largest nodule of size 1.64 X 1.64 cm) in both lobes of liver suggestive of haemangioma. The right ovarian cyst was 2.26 X 1.25 cm in size with pelvic congestion syndrome. Case Summary: This case was treated with individualized homoeopathy for a period of 5 months at the outpatient department (OPD) of Regional Research Institute for Homoeopathy, Agartala. Homoeopathic medicine Pulsatilla, was given to the patient on the basis of individualistic approach. The patient not only improved in her presenting complaints but also there was change in diagnostic parameters. Post treatment outcome corroborated with follow up laboratory investigations that showed significant changes. Ultrasonography revealed no obvious abnormality after homoeopathic treatment with improvement in pelvic congestion syndrome. This case report suggests that a correctly chosen homoeopathic medicine can be beneficial even in complicated and unusual cases
Effect of Cuprum metallicum potentised through both serial dilution and succussion in comparison to succussion alone on Escherichia coli bacterial system and electrical properties of poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) polymer
Background: Homoeopathic medicines are traditionally potentized by serial dilution followed by succussion. Respective roles of these two components need to be assessed and explored for which the present study was undertaken. Objective: To compare the effect of the medicine Cuprum metallicum (Cup. met.) potentised through both serial dilution and succussion with succussion alone on selected biological and physical systems. Method: Starting with the medicine Cup. met. at 6C, we potentized it further to 30C and 200 C by serial dilution, followed by succussion (Set A). The same medicine at 6C was also potentized to 30C and 200C by using succussion alone (Set B). The antibacterial property of these two sets was compared on E. coli, a biological system and electrical properties on polymer matrix PVDF-HFP (widely used as charge separator) a physical system. Results: Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy shows that the particles get more agglomerated at higher potency in Set B. Antibacterial effect of Cup. met. in Set B at 30C and 200C was observed to be more significant as compared to Set A. Effect of Cup. met. on polymer matrix in Set A varied significantly with the potency as compared to Set B wherein less beta phase crystallization was produced followed by no significant change in electrical properties. Conclusion: Comparison of results using the medicine Cup. met. in two experimental set ups shows that serial dilution with succussion makes an important difference between the two sets
Evaluation of qualitative phytochemical analysis of water extract of Achyranthes aspera and Achyranthes aspera 30
Introduction: Plant sources are a valuable starting material for drug development. These plants are the potential therapeutic agents, which provide maximum benefits with minimum adverse effects. Objective: The objective of the study is to evaluate the qualitative phytochemical analysis of water extract of whole plant excluding root of Achyranthes aspera and 30 potency of the same drug. Methodology: The qualitative phytochemical analysis of water extract of whole plant excluding root of Achyranthes aspera and Achyranthes aspera 30 has been performed to confirm the presence of alkaloid, saponin, phenolic compound, carbohydrate and proteins. Physicochemical constants such as ash, extractive values and moisture content were also determined. Results: The physicochemical analysis showed that the parts of this plant contained total ash value of 9.59% in which the acid-insoluble ash is 2.27%. The extractive values percentage of water-soluble extract is 20.91%. The qualitative phytochemical analysis reveals the presence of carbohydrates, protein, alkaloids, saponins and phenolic compounds in water extract of Achyranthes aspera and Achyranthes aspera 30. The analysis also shows that various bioactive phytochemicals are retained with dilution while preparation of Homoeopathic medicines. Conclusion: Achyranthes aspera in homoeopathic potency 30 contains its bioactive phytochemicals even after being a high dilution (with alcohol) of the original plant
