Homoeopathy in management of chronic ischaemic ulcer: An evidence-based case report
Introduction: Ischaemic or arterial ulcer occurs when there is an obstruction in the arterial supply to a particular part of the human body leading to necrosis. These are extremely painful types of chronic wounds. Treating arterial ulcers is a difficult task for the physician since supportive measures such as compression therapy and leg elevation are contraindicated. Surgical intervention is the ultimate approach to manage in conventional medicine. The homoeopathic system of medicine offers a wide range of medicines and a holistic approach to treat such cases non-invasively. Case Summary: A case of a 75-year-old woman who suffered from chronic ischaemic ulcer for the past year, successfully managed using frequent doses of homoeopathic medicines Arsenicum album and Calendula officinalis, is reported here. The duration of treatment was 4 months
Is Homoeopathy contributing to the universal health coverage goal of #HealthForAll?
The expansion of health service coverage, a key target of the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals, has seen limited progress in recent years, further hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the financial protection has witnessed a decline. Fifty percent of the global population lacks access to essential health services. An estimated 2 billion people grapple with financial hardships resulting from out-of-pocket health expenses, including 344 million individuals residing in extreme poverty.
On 12 December 2012, a historic resolution endorsing the acceleration of progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as a paramount international development priority was unanimously endorsed by the United Nations. Two years later, on 12 December 2014, the Universal Health Coverage Coalition initiated the celebration of December 12 as UHC Day, emphasising the importance of holding leaders accountable for their commitment to #HealthForAll. Recognising the significance of this initiative, the United Nations officially designated December 12 as International Universal Health Coverage Day on 12 December 2017. In December 2023, the global community renewed its commitment to achieving UHC for all with the adoption of the United Nations Political Declaration on UHC (21 September 2023). Now, there is a call for immediate and tangible steps to reignite progress, emphasising the need for concrete actions following this renewed commitment
Effectiveness of individualised homoeopathic intervention in warts – A case series
Verruca vulgaris, also known as common warts, is benign lesions caused by the non-malignant human papillomavirus, affecting approximately 10% of the population globally. It may range from 1 mm to several cm, and are mostly seen on the extremities, followed by the face. They may be transmitted by direct or indirect contact and lead to cosmetic concerns, itching and mild to severe pain while doing activities. Conventional treatment has destructive therapies such as salicylic acid, cauterisation and cryosurgery, which induce many adverse effects from local to general. However, an individualised homoeopathic approach can be used to effectively treat these warts, without any need of applying topicals, or recurrence of the complaints. The improvement was assessed through photographic records. This case series provides an insight to individualised homoeopathic intervention in different types of warts and paves the way for pragmatic studies in the future
Individualised homoeopathic medicine versus placebo in the pain management of knee and hip osteoarthritis: A double-blind, randomised controlled trial
Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive, degenerative disease affecting large weight-bearing joints. The severity of symptoms varies among individuals; whereas pain and stiffness are the most troublesome complaints. Homoeopathic medicines have the potential to manage pain episodes. Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the effect of individualised homoeopathic medicine (IHM) in managing the pain of knee and hip OA. Methods: A prospective, double-blind, randomised (1:1) placebo-controlled trial was conducted on 60 individuals suffering from OA at R.B.T.S. Govt. Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur. Visual analogue scale for pain (Score-A-1), stiffness (Score-A-2) and loss of function (Score-A-3) was the primary outcomes and the OKHQOL scale (Score-B) was the secondary outcome. The outcomes were measured at baseline and after 3 months. Comparative analysis was done to detect group differences. Intra and intergroup analysis was done by paired and unpaired t-tests, respectively. Results: Statistically significant results were observed in both intra and intergroup outcomes (P \u3c 0.05, at 95% CI). The group differences in Score-A-1 (mean difference: −5.83, 95% CI: −6.71to−4.94, P \u3c 0.001), Score-A-2 (mean difference: −5.43, 95% CI: −6.38to−4.48, P \u3c 0.001), Score-A-3 (mean difference: −5.60, 95% CI: −6.50to-4.69, P \u3c 0.001) and in Score-B (mean difference: −106.87, 95% CI: −142.77 to−70.96, P \u3c 0.001) were statistically significant after 3 months. However, the improvement was much better in the IHM group than in the placebo group. The frequently indicated medicines were Rhus toxicodendron, Medorrhinum, Bryonia and Syphilinum. Conclusion: This study shows that IHMs can improve the pain in knee and hip OA, as well as the quality of life
Homoeopathic management of non-responsive, nodulocystic acne: A case report
Introduction: Nodulocystic acne is a severe form of acne that can significantly damage the skin and impact the quality of life. Although oral isotretinoin is considered an effective conventional treatment for such cases, it often fails. A case of severe facial nodulocystic acne is reported here, where allopathic treatment failed to control the condition. Homoeopathic treatment was administered, and the patient improved. Case Summary: A 16-year-old female patient presented with pustular, nodular, cystic and painful eruptions on the face, which were treated with individualised homoeopathic medicine Tarentula cubensis. The symptoms improved without any relapse. The causal attribution of changes was assessed by modified Naranjo criteria. The case progress was documented photographically at the beginning, during and at the end of treatment. The patient’s quality of life had also improved markedly, along with the presenting complaints. The uniqueness of this case was that the severe acne, which did not respond to conventional treatment, was resolved with homoeopathy
COVID-19 vaccines and homoeopathy – An integrative review
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought millions of people at risk. Clinical trials of several known antiviral drugs and vaccines have been done. Homoeopathy is known to be effective in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases as well as in overcoming some adverse effects of vaccination. Objectives: The objectives of this review were to identify the adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccination from the published literature and doing homoeopathic repertorisation to find out indicated remedies for alleviating the ill effects of COVID-19 vaccines. Methods: Published literature was searched for ‘Covid-19’, ‘Vaccination’ and ‘Adverse events’ in PubMed between January 2020 and July 2021. The related symptoms pertaining to known adverse effects were picked and repertorised with appropriate rubrics from the ‘Vaccination’ chapter of Murphy’s clinical repertory and synthesis repertory. Results: Repertorial totality of identified symptoms was analysed. Thuja scored high when symptoms related to the adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines were repertorised according to Murphy’s and synthesis repertories. Indications of the common remedies for the ill-effects identified for COVID-19 vaccination are discussed. Conclusion: Vaccines against nCoV- 19 are still not fully researched, especially for their long-term effects. Hence, whether they would prove to be friends or foes to humankind, in the long run, is the arena of future research. Meanwhile, homoeopathy can lend its services to overcome the ill effects of the vaccination. Studies with rigorous designs to find out the efficacy of homoeopathic medicines in relieving the adverse effects of vaccination are suggested
The usefulness of homoeopathic medicines for infertility – A case series
Introduction: Infertility is the inability to achieve a successful pregnancy within 2 years of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. About 8–12% of couples of reproductive age experience infertility worldwide. Infertility may result from any underlying pathology or unexplained causes and can cause severe emotional disturbances in both partners. The complexity and cost of conventional treatment may not be affordable for a majority of people. Case Summary: Three cases of infertility with an underlying pathology successfully treated with standalone homoeopathic treatment are reported. These cases presented with a structural deformity as a cause of infertility. The patients partners were also given homoeopathic medicines in all the cases. The first case showed a long liquefaction time on semen analysis and the female partner had a unilateral tubal block. The second case investigation reported ipsilateral varicocele and small-sized testes with oligospermia. In the third case, the female had polycystic ovarian syndrome with a sub-septate uterus and multinodular goitre. All three cases were treated with individualised homoeopathic medicine. All these cases were followed up regularly and they conceived within 6 months of treatment
Individualized homeopathy in a case of liver abscess: A case report
Introduction: Liver abscesses (LAs) are purulent collections in the liver parenchyma that result from bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infection which can spread to the liver by extension of an adjacent infection, or as a result of trauma. Homoeopathic approach of treating the disease based on symptom totality is a relevant alternative to often unsatisfactory conventional medicine in cases of LA.
Case Summary: A 35-yearold male who presented with LA was treated with homoeopathic medicine based on the totality of symptoms and significant improvement was seen with resolution of abscess in the liver along with relief in other presenting symptoms. This enhances our belief in the potential of individualized homeopathy in treating infectious conditions
Role of homoeopathy in the management of adhesive capsulitis: A pretest-posttest study
Background: Adhesive capsulitis (AC) is an insidious and painful stiffening of the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint, resulting in compromised functional ability and quality of life (QoL).
Objectives: Primary objective was to evaluate change in shoulder pain after individualised homoeopathy treatment for over 2 months. Secondary objective was to assess the change in the QoL and outcome related to impact on daily living (ORIDL).
Methods: A single-arm, pretest-posttest, clinical study on AC was conducted on 40 participants recruited from the outpatient clinic of rheumatological disorders at Clinical Research Unit (Homoeopathy), Siliguri, West Bengal, India. Medicines were prescribed on the basis of the totality of symptoms. Changes in shoulder pain over 2 months were evaluated using the shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI). QoL was evaluated using SF-12v2 and ORIDL (participants and physician assessed), respectively.
Results: Thirty-six participants completed the study and four participants dropped out. A protocol compliant sample of n = 36 was analysed. There was a statistically significant reduction of SPADI score (91.92 ± 10.22 vs. 34.14 ± 24.43; mean reduction 57.78, 95% CI 49.41–66.14, P \u3c 0.001) and statistically significant increase in SF-12 v2 score (44.39 ± 9.70 vs. 72.27 ± 10.97; mean increase 27.87, 95% CI 23.89–31.85, P \u3c 0.001). The Spearman’s correlation between the changes in physician assessment ORIDL scores and participants assessment ORIDL scores over 2 months suggested a statistically significant correlation (rs = 0.998, P \u3c 0.01).
Conclusion: The findings showed symptom alleviation, and improvement in the QoL after homoeopathic treatment. Randomised controlled trials are further warranted
