    The distribution of rainbow trout is strongly influenced by their habitat. As climatic conditions change, the distribution of rainbow trout populations will change along with them. The objective of this study was to identify the particular habitat parameters that rainbow trout select for in this lotic system and to specifically assess how this relates to the upper extant of their distribution. By assessing the distribution of the upper extant specifically, future research may be conducted to better assess climatic changes on a small and/or large scale basis. A 9,000 m section of the Clearwater River was used as the study site. Hook-and-line method was used to catch all rainbow trout throughout this reach and was used to assess the upper extant of the trout population’s distribution. Available and used habitat parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen, depth, width, stream velocity, and substrate size were assessed two times per week for three months. A t-test, displaying 95% confidence, was used to compare available habitat to habitat used by rainbow trout. T-test results indicated that temperature (p \u3c 0.001), depth (p = 0.029), and width (p = 0.036) were habitat parameters that rainbow trout selected for. Trout resided farther upstream in the spring when river temperatures were cooler and depths deeper due to flooding conditions from snow melt. As temperatures increased, trout moved downstream to cooler water. While this trend is inconsistent with the River Continuum Concept, which explains physical, chemical, and biological patterns for north to south flowing rivers, the Clearwater River flows south to north and therefore may have extensive differences. As climatic conditions change, especially as temperatures increase, the distribution of trout will change also

    The Impact and Effectiveness of Student-Centered Classroom Structure

    The purpose of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of student-centered learning as an alternative classroom structure. It is important that we continually reflect on our teaching methods and explore alternatives that can help give our students the best chance to succeed. While the literature is mixed with regard to which classroom style is best, there are many sources showing the benefits of student-centered instruction over a strictly teacher- centered classroom. Sources also showed that teachers do not need to choose exclusively one style of teaching, and that a blended classroom using a variety of teaching styles can be very effective. This paper also explores why teachers are reluctant to implement student-centered instruction into their classes, and some proven methods for dealing with these issues

    Winter Survival Strategies of Benthic Invertebrates in Temporary Habitats in a Northern Minnesota Lake

    During the winter months in the northern hemisphere, above 40 degrees latitude, a freezing event occurs that can last several months. Some lakes may have large portions of the shallow littoral zone frozen completely solid down into the sediments. Invertebrates affected by these events have developed survival strategies to cope with the harsh environment. The two main strategies for invertebrates in these areas are to either migrate to a different area and recolonize the original area when it becomes available again, or to burrow into the sediments and withstand the freezing. A 1- month study took place on Lake Bemidji (Bemidji, MN) in the spring of 2013 to identify the survival strategies of these organisms. Core samples were taken in shallow littoral areas to estimate invertebrate densities and determine where in the sediment column the invertebrates were located. When analyzing the samples, it did appear that different survival strategies were being utilized in the different study areas. The deeper sampling locations had the majority (90%) of invertebrates in the top 3 cm of substrate, which favors a recolonization strategy. In contrast the shallow sampling depths showed invertebrates in larger numbers burrowed deeper into the substrate (50% at or below 3 cm). While both strategies were identified while analyzing the data set, migration was ruled out as most Chironomidae were found inside of a cocoon. This lead to the conclusion that burrowing into the sediments was the preferred form of survival in these shallow littoral areas

    Economic voting, the theory that when the economy is good the party in control gains support and when the economy is bad the party in power suffers. This is a simplistic definition and economic voting is so much more. In this paper I seek to prove how economic voting can be broken down into two categories, sociotropic and checkbook. I do this by looking at two countries in very different situation. Greece is a country going through economic turmoil and is constantly changing which party is in control of the government. It has been suffering especially hard from a debt crisis that has crippled the country’s economy. SYRIZA, the coalition of the radical left, has surpassed the PASOK, the moderate left wing party, in the most recent election. Germany on the other hand has been relatively stable throughout the European debt crisis. The economy has remained stable and Angela Merkel and the Christian Democrats will be in control of the government for third straight term. In Greece I seek to show how sociotropic economic voting is taking place and how radical parties are gaining support. In Germany I show how checkbook economic voting is taking place and why it is

    Learning Style Relationship to Motivation and Success in the Flipped vs Non-Flipped Classroom

    This research paper will provide a brief overview of what a “flipped classroom” is and the variations of it. It will address whether a flipped classroom is a possible way of addressing students of all learning styles and if all learning styles are motivated in a flipped classroom. The VARK learning style inventory will be given to all students in four College Algebra Prep classes. Two classes will be the flipped “inverted” style of classroom and the other two will be the traditional (control) style of classroom. All students in both formats will also be given a periodic survey to examine motivation levels. Lastly, all summative tests given during this grading period (1st quarter) will be examined to see if learning styles and flipped classrooms can affect the outcome of student grades
