How Factors of State Supreme Court Retention Affect Votes to Overturn Precedent: How Do Different Factors of State Supreme Court Composition Effect the Likelihood That Salient Cases Will Result in an Overturning of Precedent?
No full textSince the establishment of individual states supreme courts, there has been debate on the best way to retain individual judges to their court. With five different forms of retention, each comes with their own set of outside forces that determine how a judge behaves while on the court. Some of these outside forces like a judge’s length of service on the court can also affect the decision to overturn a standing precedent, especially when the case captures great amounts of media attention. Salient cases are often more likely to result in an overturned precedent than other cases but outside factors can often make or break a justice’s opinion on the issue at hand. These determining factors need to be identified and dissected in order to fully understand their weight in the decision process. Examination of Online Voter Registration Within Non-Profit Organizations Post 1993
No full textVoting is a key eliminate to the validity of our democracy. Nonprofit organizations are one of the fastest growing organization structures within our society, with growing opportunities to engage voters in pursuit of their goals along with enhanced pressure following the movements surrounding the 1993 voter registration act. In this Thesis I analysis what categories of nonprofit organizations promote voter registration using their websites, to order to establish which organizations are utilizing their resources to promote their goals. The data I use is taken from the Washington Representatives studies which consists of 43,012 nonprofit organizations within Washington DC. My research has determined that certain types of nonprofit organizations appear to be more successful in engaging their communities through online voter registration engagement
How Socialism Failed Venezuela
No full textIn the 1970s, Venezuela was considered one of the wealthiest nations in the world. They enjoyed high oil prices after the discovery of OPEC, they were a democratized country in a continent where most of it was still undeveloped. Unfortunately, in the 1980s a major cut in oil prices caused economic turmoil, and leading into the 90s there were bloody riots, political disparity, attempted coups and building poverty. In 1998 came Hugo Chavez, a newly elected president to rid their economic issues and end corruption. However, that all turned out to be the opposite of what he did. The country of Venezuela today is seen around the world as a country of overrun corruption, economic depression, mass malnutrition and fierce dictatorship. While the country has the world’s largest oil reserves, Venezuela struggles today in economic hardships, and many political leaders in our country have been debating how they went from the second wealthiest nation in the western hemisphere to a crushed society. This thesis dives into three big features as to how Venezuela collapsed: state ownership, social welfare programs, and political corruption. After extensive research, it concludes socialism is what really killed this nation, and a dangerous central government ran by a small group of corrupt elites now holds the destiny in their future
Using Northern Pike and Yellow Perch to Attempt a Trophic Cascade
No full textIn the midwestern USA, water clarity has decreased in shallow lakes as a result of large populations of Fathead Minnow Pimephales promelas and agriculture that impact the life that depend on shallow habitats, such as waterfowl, fish, and aquatic plants. Northern Pike Esox lucius and Yellow Perch Perca flavescens were stocked in a few lakes in attempt to create a tropic cascade and reduce populations of nuisance Fathead Minnows. Northern Pike were stocked as fry and Yellow Perch were stocked as adults either pre-spawn or post-spawn. Lake managers hypothesized adult Yellow Perch would spawn and the age-0 Perch would feed age-0 Northern Pike. After age-0, Northern Pike diets would switch to predominately Fathead Minnow and produce a trophic cascade. We used bioenergetics modeling to estimate relative consumption rates in three study lakes in Southern Minnesota to determine if Fathead Minnow was a primary diet item of the stocked fishes. Northern Pike diets based on mass consisted mainly of Yellow Perch (60-78%), some Fathead Minnow (8-39%), and some invertebrates (2- 25%). The age-1 Northern Pike were feeding on both Yellow Perch and Fathead Minnow, but the older Northern Pike were feeding almost exclusively on Yellow Perch, which did not support the hypothesis. Yellow Perch diets based on mass highly varied, ranging from 100% invertebrates in age-0 and juveniles to nearly 100% fish in adults. Although creating a tropic cascade failed, highly desirable Northern Pike and Yellow Perch fisheries were created for the public to enjoy

Labor Union Members\u27 Stance on Major Social Issues in the 2016 General Election
No full textIn 2016, Democratic Candidate for President Hillary Clinton faced off against Republican Candidate Donald Trump in what was expected to be a lopsided victory for the Democrats. As the campaigns and researchers did a post-mortem on the results, they saw that white voters in key states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan weren’t as motivated to get to the polls for Candidate Hillary Clinton versus her opponent Donald Trump. I took a deep dive into trying try to find the reason that why labor union members could have broken from their traditional ranks of Democrats to vote for Donald Trump by examining some of the biggest social issues in the 2016 general election. The data I am examining is the 2016 Cooperative Congressional Election Survey administered by YouGov. The CCES 2016 surveyed 64,400+ US citizens which was administered in two waves being the pre-election and post-election waves. I find that there is a small group of Democratic-identifying union members that break from the Democratic Party on major issues and I identify them as a part of those white voters who may have voted for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton. Their defection may have resulted in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania flipping from Democratic in 2012 to Republican in 2018
Walleye Sander vitreus Visceral Fat Accumulation
No full textFor ectothermic species, proper lipid retention is critical to surviving in regions with limited growing seasons. Visceral fat is the dominant form of this energy storage in fish. Build up and depletion of these lipids occur seasonally as activity levels change throughout winter and spring. Due to this annual pattern, the purpose of this study is to determine a trend in the amount of visceral fat Walleye Sander vitreus accumulate in a time of year when metabolic rates are low and transition into the spawning process has yet to occur. Angling was the method of capture conducted during the months of January and February between two northern Minnesota lakes. Percent visceral wet mass was significantly different among listed fish sex categories with mature females having the highest levels (P \u3c 0.01). Total visceral wet weight compared to percent visceral dry mass also had a significant positive relationship (P = 0.04). No evidence suggests correlation between relative weight (Wr) and percent visceral dry mass (P = 0.08)

No full textSince the referendum in 2016 that stated the United Kingdom was to leave the EU, many were wondering what caused them to leave. Many point to the theory that integration into the European Union was the cause, however we will look into other factors such as attitudes by analyzing the works of theorists, researchers, professors, and others to answer the question if the EUs encroachment on sovereignty, rise of nationalism, and the attitudes towards the EU are the possible factors to leaving the EU. I analyze political identities, occupation, and overall feelings on the EU and EU policies to see where the dissatisfaction is most prevalent
