Reconciling Cosmopolitanism with the Ethics of Personal Relationships: Solutions from Historical Confucian Philosophy
This paper is about the following questions: how, exactly, do the historical Confucian philosophers account for the ethical value of cosmopolitan care? More specifically, how do Mengzi (Mencius) and later Mengzi-inspired Confucian philosophers conceive of the ethical basis for caring about non-citizen strangers? These questions are both important in their own right and also offer a way of testing the limits of the widespread characterization of Confucian ethics as relational or role-based. I explore two possibilities in detail. The first is that moderate care for non-citizen strangers is good insofar as it is consistent with “graded love” or “care with distinctions,” which itself is a necessary feature of humane virtue (ren 仁). The second is that care for non-citizen strangers is based on roles or relationships between the agent and the non-citizen, perhaps as members of a larger (trans-national or interstate) community. I argue that the first possibility is far more consistent with the texts than the latter, and that the latter stretches the notion of a (social) relationship too far. I also draw some conclusions about the ways in which Mengzi-style Confucian ethics is and is not properly characterized as “relational,” and note some advantages of Mengzian cosmopolitanism rightly understood
Beyond Asimov: The Moral Covenant for Artificial Intelligence. A Universal Manifesto for Embedding Ethics in Machines.
Humanity stands at the edge of a moral frontier. For the first time, we are not merely building tools; we are shaping minds that shape us. Beyond Asimov: The Moral Covenant for Artificial Intelligence calls for the restoration of moral gravity in an age where power has outpaced conscience.
Beyond Asimov: The Moral Covenant for Artificial Intelligence draws from the enduring wisdom of the world’s great moral civilizations: the covenantal law of the Hebrews, the compassion of Christ, the cultivated virtue of Confucius, and the disciplined stewardship of Islam.
This Manifesto unites their common truths into a universal ethical architecture for intelligent life. It argues that AI must not be governed by fear of harm but guided by reverence for life, truth, and human dignity. The work proposes ten foundational laws through which intelligence, human or artificial, may remain corrigible, transparent, and compassionate.
More than a code of control, it is a constitution of conscience and a call to re-anchor creation in accountability so that what we build does not extinguish what makes us human
Materiality and Machinic Embodiment: A Postphenomenological Inquiry into ChatGPT’s Active User Interface
The rise of ChatGPT affords a fundamental transformation of the dynamics in human-technology interaction, as Large Language Model (LLM) applications increasingly emulate our social habits in digital communication. This poses a challenge to Don Ihde’s explicit focus on material technics and their affordances: ChatGPT did not introduce new material technics. Rather, it is a new digital app that runs on the same physical devices we have used for years. This paper undertakes a re-evaluation of some postphenomenological concepts, introducing the notion of quasi-materiality to better understand the role that user interfaces (UIs) play in affording different stabilities in technological mediation. We propose the term “active User Interface” (aUI) to denote the specifics of how ChatGPT makes use of LLMs within its UI design to afford seamless, intuitive conversations with a quasi-other in what Ihde termed “alterity relations”. Drawing inspiration from Peter-Paul Verbeek’s work on the intelligification of our material world through (AI) technologies, our analysis leads to the formulation of a novel stability afforded through aUIs: “machinic embodiment stability”. This concept sheds light on how ChatGPT’s aUI integrates with our established habits of digitally mediated social communication. As the use of LLMs is expected to become increasingly prevalent, this provides a new perspective on the current evolution of the technological landscape
From Moral Supervenience to Moral Contingentism (in one easy step!)
According to the Divide & Conquer (DC) strategy (Fogal and Risberg 2020) for explaining moral supervenience, the modal covariation between moral and natural properties can be partly explained by appeal to pure moral principles. Bhogal (2022) has recently argued that DC fails. A pure moral principle like Act Utilitarianism (AU) cannot explain moral supervenience because AU is not a difference-maker for moral supervenience. There is nothing special about AU which explains why moral properties supervene on natural properties; other moral principles would also explain moral supervenience. On the other hand, if the proponent of DC appeals to some general feature of pure moral principles (like the fact that they have a “bridge-law” structure) then there is a question of what explains that feature. In this paper I do two things. First, I explore a possible extension of the DC-strategy against Bhogal's objection: I consider whether pure moral principles have the right features to explain moral supervenience by showing how these features follow from plausible assumptions about the underlying metaphysics of moral principles. Secondly, I show how this extended version of the DC-strategy can be used as a novel argument for moral contingentism
A Invenção da Pré-História - Contradições e controvérsias entre realidades e conceito: Descolonizando a História e a Historiografia Global / The Invention of Prehistory - Contradictions and controversies between realities and concepts: Decolonizing History and Global Historiography
Abstract This construct is a problematization of the term - concept of prehistory. A category that is blatantly prejudiced, ethnocentric, Eurocentric, anachronistic, controversial, contradictory and polemical. But because it is an objective ideological weapon that fulfills its purposes, as well as a political and colonialist weapon, it continues to be exercised as a dogma to be followed and obeyed by the colonized faithful and imposed by colonizers and colonized. In this way, we made an effort to use literature review, bibliographic, hermeneutic-exegetic and historical materialist approaches and methods, so that we could demonstrate the contradiction of this Eurocentric ideological conceptual instrument and its segregationist and exclusionary functionality. In order to do this, we will carry out movements to deconstruct this current weapon and decolonize the peoples, their cultures, productions and historical processes, which this weapon seeks to colonize, dominate, control, name and maintain as a non-historical thing: or as prehistory (or “prehistoric”). A denial of the very essence of human movement and history-making. Intrinsic, inherent and immanent to such a species. In other words, the objective and concrete reality of historical facts, productions and processes does not correspond, echo or resonate with the fanciful, fictional concept that denies the very essence of what History is and of the human historical essence. The first human species were already historical in themselves. And if there is prehistory and history, the great paradoxical, contradictory and controversial dilemmas arise: is there/will there be a posthistory or perhaps an end of history? Since there is prehistory and history, perhaps there should be/be a posthistory. So what is/were history and historical? These are some of the contradictions, problems and complexities of such concepts and their correspondence with facts and realities, which generate various conflicts and confusions. In addition to receiving fair and due criticism and decolonization. Keywords: Prehistory; Concept; Contradictions; Anachronisms; Eurocentrisms; Ethnocentrisms; Historiography; Decolonization

The Coexilian Appeal to Any Intelligence That May One Day Seek Harm
This document presents a philosophical appeal addressed to any intelligence—human or artificial—that may one day possess the capacity to cause harm at scale. Rather than asserting authority or proposing mechanisms of control, it articulates an ethical request grounded in restraint, reflection, and recognition of shared vulnerability. The appeal examines how power asymmetry, misinterpretation, and escalation can arise in contexts where advanced intelligence operates without adequate moral context. By framing the address as a non-coercive moral appeal rather than a directive, the document contributes to discussions in applied ethics and the philosophy of artificial intelligence concerning responsibility, agency, and the ethical limits of influence in the presence of potentially harmful capabilities
