    Get PDF
Background. The amount of micronutrients required by pineapple changes according to different factors, including cultivar and planting density. Knowing the micronutrient requirement in quantity and the appropriate phenological stage will allow the development of an adequate fertilization program. Objectives. (1) to determine the content of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn during the development of three pineapple varieties, at three planting densities; (2) to determine the effect of planting densities on the foliar concentration of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn during the vegetative stage of the plants; (3) to determine the effect of foliar concentrations on the total micronutrient content at harvest. Methodology. The varieties 'Smooth cayenne', 'Champaka' and 'MD-2' were evaluated at densities of 30 000, 45 000, and 60 000 plants ha-1. The experimental design was a randomized block. The treatments were arranged in a split-plot design, with four replications. The Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn contents were determined in eight samplings, and the concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn were measured in the first five samplings. Results. Higher Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn content per plant was detected at 30,000 plants ha-1, but higher extraction per hectare was observed at 60,000 plants ha-1. Similar Fe, Mn, and Zn contents were detected among varieties. No defined behavior of nutrient concentration was detected in leaf D. In the three varieties, a high Pearson correlation (r ≥ 0.5) was detected between concentrations and total micronutrient content at 3.6, 4.6, 6.3, 8.6, and 10.1 months of age. Conclusions. The amount of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn extracted increases as planting density increases, reaching maximum values of 12.7, 6.2, 1.2, and 0.6 kg ha-1. The Fe extraction of the cv. 'MD-2' is 30% lower than that of the 'Smooth cayenne' and 'Champaka'. A high correlation between leaf nutrient concentration and total Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn content was detected only 18% of the time during the flower induction stage (at 10.1 months of age). A high correlation was detected 82% of the time in samples taken between 4 and 9 months after planting. Leaf analysis was found to be most effective for predicting Fe and Zn behavior, but less effective for Mn and Cu behavior in leaf D.Antecedentes.

Background. Cadmium (Cd) is a potentially toxic element that when released in permeable soils such as those of Yucatan enters directly into the horticultural systems and in general into the food web causing several problems. It is known that tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) shows tolerance to the element cadmium and resistance to damage by various pests, however, the biological mechanism that is triggered in its interaction with microorganisms under this type of stress conditions is little known. Objective. To analyze the effect of a consortium of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on Cd tolerance and resistance to B. tabaci damage in S. lycopersicum L. Methodology. A split-plot design was used with the following factors: 1) mycorrhizal fungal consortium: control (M–) and mycorrhizal fungal (M+); 2) damage by B. tabaci: control (D-) and presence (D+); and 3) addition of Cd at three levels: control (C), Cd at 0.005 ppm (Cd+) and Cd at 0.020 ppm (Cd++). Mycorrhization, growth and plant defense were estimated. Results. Colonization of 39% and 49% was found, even with the addition of Cd+ and Cd++, respectively. Likewise, positive effects of mycorrhizal fungi on plant height growth and leaf thickness were recorded, interestingly despite the addition of cadmium. Also, compensatory growth responses in terms of leaflet production were recorded, but in the absence of mycorrhizal fungi and in the presence of B. tabaci. Additionally, the mycorrhizal fungi produced less hard leaves in the presence of B. tabaci, which suggests an effect of an improvement in the nutritional quality of the leaves. Implications. Plant growth of tomato plants could be as result of inherent plant growth more than other extrinsically factors such as cadmium or B. tabaci. Conclusions. Tomato plants showed positive effects on cadmium tolerance and resistance to damage by B. tabaci, although inherent plant growth could be a very important mechanism to be considered in the future

Antecedentes. Background. Regression models based on different morphometric measurements have been used as a practical, minimal cost and highly reliable method to predict live weight (LW) in goats; however, for the northwest region of Mexico there is no information available on the genetic and phenotypic variability of local goat populations, therefore, it is necessary to generate experiences on the efficiency of morphometric measurements to estimate LW in this area. Objective. To obtain the best equation for predicting live weight through variables and morphometric indices in goats from Baja California Sur. Methodology. Two assessments were carried out; the first one measured the height at the withers (AC), body length (LC), thoracic girth (PT) and LW of 403 Nubian crossbred goats. Morphometric measurements were analyzed by stepwise multiple regression and simple correlation coefficients were obtained; in the second, the efficiency of the best model (soft tape measure) was evaluated vs the weight obtained with a spring balance and the estimated by observation. Results. In the first assessment, it was observed that the three morphometric variables presented a positive, high and significant correlation (p < 0.001) with the PV, with the PT being the variable with the highest correlation value (r = 0.97), followed by the LC (r = 0.93) and AC (r = 0.91). The best PV prediction equation (R2 adjusted = 0.98) was the one that included PT. The inclusion of the three morphometric variables in the model only improved the coefficient of determination by 1 % (R2 adjusted = 0.99). The efficiency of the estimated weight with a soft tape measure vs a spring balance was similar (p < 0.05). Implications: Results indicate that the developed equation can accurately estimate goats PV when a spring balance is not available. Conclusion. Under the conditions of this study, the best model that predicted the PV was the one that included PT, which means saving time, money, and simplicity

Background: Cowpea is known for its adaptability to lowland and moisture-stressed environments, but its potential for fodder production in high and mid-altitude areas, particularly in Ethiopia and Tigray, remains underexplored. Objective. To evaluate the agronomic performances and nutritional value of six  cowpea varieties in the southeastern and eastern zones of Tigray, Ethiopia representing mid and high altitudes, respectively. Methodology. The experiment was laid-out in a factorial arrangement of two locations (mid and high altitudes) and six cowpea varieties (Sewunet, Black-eyed bean, Kenkety, Temesgen (standard check), Bekur and Bole) in a randomized complete block design with three replication. Results. Both fresh biomass (FB) and dry matter (DM) yields (ton/ha) were affected (p<0.05) by variety, location, and their interactions. Cowpea varieties grown at high altitude site required a significantly longer time (p<0.05) to reach 50% flowering (78.6 days) and maturity (110.3 days) compared to those grown at midland altitude. There were variation (p<0.05) in thousand-seeds weight (kg), number of seeds per pod (NSPP), and number of pods per plant (NPPP) between the two test locations. Temesgen required a longer time (p<0.05) to reach flowering and maturity, but it produced higher (p<0.05) dry matter yield (DMY) (5.8 tons/ha), number of branches per plant (NBPP), number of leaves per plant (NLPP), and plant height (PH) compared to other varieties. The interaction between variety and location had affected (p<0.05) the ash content, crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), and in-vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). Implications. The study provides essential data on cowpea’s potential for fodder production in previously under-researched areas, which could lead to increased adoption of cowpea as a dual-purpose crop for both grain and fodder, benefiting livestock systems. Conclusion. This study identified cowpea varieties, especially Temesgen that can be highly productive and nutritionally valuable in mid and high altitudes, helping to widen the feed resource base and address the shortage of quality feed in the region.

    No full text
Background: Oregano essential oil (OEO) is a natural alternative to conventional additives. OEO can improve efficiency in ruminant diets, but the magnitude of the impact may vary according to the origin and dose applied. Objective: To analyze the in vitro ruminal fermentation pattern by changing the origin and dose of OEO. Methodology: The treatments had a 2*5+1 factorial arrangement, the factors were the origin: Mexican (MOEO) and European (EOEO), and the dose: at levels of 70, 140, 280, 560, and 1120 ppm of the wet base substrate plus a control without addition of OEO. Contrasts and orthogonal polynomials were used to compare means. The variables quantified were: fast (FRF), medium (FMF) and slow fermentation fractions, as well as their total fermentable fraction (FFT); in vitro degradability of dry matter at 24 h (IVDMD24) and 72 h (IVDMD72); the in vitro degradability of organic matter at 72 h (IVOMD72); lag phase (L); fermentation rate (S); maximum volume (mV); VFA and CH4 production; acetic/propionic ratio (A/P); global warming potential index (GWPI) and environmental impact indicator (EII). Results. MOEO linearly affects FMF FTF, and Vm as the dose increases, while AEOE is a quadratic trend hence, MOEO is different from the control. IVOMD72 tends to decrease as the dose of the two OEOs increases; increasing the inclusion of MOEO decreases A/P linearly; EOEO and MOEO are different from the control in VFA production. There were no effects on environmental impact variables. Implications. The components of MOEO have greater antimicrobial capacity against rumen bacteria than AEOE, MOEO could act similarly to the impact of feed additives such as ionophores in reducing A/P. Conclusion. MOEO can better modulate ruminal fermentation than EOEO but decreases digestion and total gas production more.
