Background. One of the main pests of sugarcane are spittlebugs Aeneolamia spp. The use of sticky trap yellow and green colored has been proposed as an alternate monitoring method without definitively determining which color is the most effective. Objective. Evaluate the capture efficiency of colored glue plastic traps on spittlebugs during the sampling period and the general capture of arthropods in sugarcane in Panama. Methodology. The efficiency of sticky traps of yellow, green, blue, white and red colors on spittlebugs populations over time and the general capture of arthropods present in sugarcane in Panama were evaluated. For the observation of spittlebugs in time in ten localities, five traps of the colors mentioned above were established, which were reviewed weekly for four weeks. For the general capture of arthropods, work was carried out in five different locations with an equal number of traps and weeks of observation. Results. In the case of catches in traps associated with the capture time, 2675 individuals of Aeneolamia spp. were captured, where 99% corresponded to Aneolamia lepidior (Fowler) and 1% to Aneolamia reducta (Lallemand). The highest captures were given in yellow traps (52%), followed by green traps (43%), without presenting differences between them but rather an effect of observation time in the capture, which increased from the first week to the fourth. With respect to the general capture of arthropods, 2331 species were found mainly in yellow traps (46.6%) and green traps (41.2%), where 88.4% corresponded to phytophagous insects and less than 10% to predators and parasitoids, with no differences between yellow and green traps in the capture of beneficial insects. Implications. This research implies the importance of integrating alternatives such as sticky plastic traps within the integrated management of the spittlebug in sugar cane. Conclusions. The yellow and green sticky plastic traps turned out to be equally efficient for the capture of spittlebugs species at sampling time, representing an alternative within integrated management programs of the spittlebugs in sugar cane.Antecedentes.

Background. In anestrous goats exposed to sexually active male goats ("male effect"), more than 90% display estrus and ovulate, but only 70% give birth. Objective. To determine the causes that reduce fertility at birth of goats exposed to the male effect. Methodology. Twenty-nine goats in seasonal anestrus that had a body condition of 1.3 ± 0.05 were used. Three adult male goats were exposed from November 1 to January 15 to artificial long days (16 h of light per day) followed by natural photoperiod. The three males were introduced into the group of goats on March 29, remaining with them for 15 days. Subsequently, from day 16 (April 13), only one male provided with a ventral harness to prevent copulation remained with the females until the end of the observations. Estrus, ovulations, pregnancies and their evolution over time were determined. Results. All goats were detected in estrus, and 28 of 29 ovulated. Most of the goats (23/29) were diagnosed pregnant 38 days after the introduction of males, and this proportion did not differ from that registered at 72 days (18/29; P = 0.09). Of the 23 females diagnosed pregnant at 38 days, 16 gave birth. Of the 13 goats that did not give birth, six returned to the anestrus after having presented estrus behavior associated or not with ovulations; four lost the embryo between days 45 and 58; one was diagnosed as pseudopregnant at 58 days and two aborted at 95 and 129 days of pregnancy. Implications. These results show that fertility at kidding is reduced in goats exposed to sexually active male goats, most likely due to the low body condition of the females. A nutritional supplementation could improve the fertility of females exposed to the male effect. Conclusion. The results obtained in this study allow us to conclude that returning to anestrus, embryo losses and abortions reduce the fertility of goats subjected to the male effect during the seasonal anestrus.Antecedentes.

CHARACTERIZATION OF AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS WITH COCOA (Theobroma cacao L) IN THREE MUNICIPALITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BOYACÁ, COLOMBIA

    Get PDF
Background: In Colombia, most traditional cocoa crops are developed under agroforestry systems (SAF), associating shrubs and trees that provide shade for cocoa. They generate additional economic income and various ecosystem services. Objective:  To characterize agroforestry systems with cocoa in three municipalities in eastern Boyacá (Miraflores, Berbeo, and Páez) belonging to the province of Lengupá. Methodology: A semi-structured interview was applied in 15 selected farms to learn about socioeconomic aspects, agronomic management of cocoa, and the use and management of trees. The botanical and structural composition and the Simpson (S), Shannon-Weaver (H´), and Jaccard (J) plant diversity indices were determined. Results: Cocoa producers in that region develop smallholder production under agroforestry systems with irregular tree species distribution, which are used for wood, firewood, shade, and food. At the regional level, 189 forest individuals accompanying cocoa were found, grouped into 18 families, 17 genera, and 28 species. The municipality of Berbeo presented the highest abundance (73 individuals), followed by Miraflores (67) and finally, Páez (49). In Berbeo, the species with a high importance value index (IVI) were Ceiba pentandra and Cedrela odorata (35 and 33, respectively), in Miraflores Trichanthera gigantea and Persea americana (44 and 42) and, in Páez Cedrela odorata (104). Implications: The selective felling of forests in SAF with cocoa, which intensifies the production of wood, has favored the loss of diversity; Therefore, the floristic composition studies serve as a basis to identify other potential forest species for the establishment of SAF to promote the diversification of the productive system and contribute to its resilience and sustainability. Conclusion: The agroforestry systems with cocoa in three municipalities in eastern Boyacá presented a differential composition and diversity, marked by a lower diversity in the municipality of Páez, where the species C. odorata had greater representation, related to the affinity of farmers for timber species of commercial interest

    No full text
Background: The sexual propagation of Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) has some limitations to preserve some desirable agronomic characteristics in successive generations. Objective: The present research evaluates the effect of a chitosan based-formulation (Quitomax®) on morpho-physiological, rooting attributes and benefit-cost ratio of two cocoa varieties during vegetative propagation. Methodology: The experimental design was completely randomized with a factorial arrangement (A × B), where A represented the two clones and B the three concentrations of chitosan based formulation used (0, 100, 500 and 1000 mg L-1), with three repetitions. per treatment. The survival (%), the stem diameter (mm), the number of leaves, the number and length (cm) of roots, the biomass (g), the gas exchange (A, gs, Ci, E), and an economic analysis of the two cocoa plant varieties were evaluated at 120 days after starting the trial. Results: The clone CCN-51 treated with 500 mg L-1 had significantly the highest results on survival (80%), stem diameter (6.83 mm), number of leaves per plant (8.2), number and length of roots (6.21 and 35.74 cm), aerial and root biomass (4.07 g and 1.64 g) parameters. In gas exchange, the highest values of Water use efficiency (WUE) were observed at 500 mg L-1 in CCN-51 (5.36 mmol mol-1) and 1000 mg L-1 in INIAP-EETP-801 (7.62 mmol µmol-1). In both clones, higher profitability was obtained when applying the chitosan dose of 500 mg L-1, reaching profitability of 40.65 and 50.00% for clones INIAP-EETP-801 and CCN-51, respectively. Implications: The cocoa clone CCN-51 showed plants that exhibited greater development of both the aerial part and the root part of the cocoa seedlings than INIP-EETP-801 coca clones. Conclusion: The chitosan based formulation at 500 mg L-1 is a promissory alternative to improve the evaluated parameters after 120 days of cocoa vegetative propagation.

    Get PDF
Background. The red temazate deer (Mazama temama, Artiodactyla: Cervidae) is a deer with ecological, cultural and economic importance, but its density and habitat characteristics in National Parks are unknown. Objective. To estimate the track index as an indirect measure of density and describe the vegetation characteristics of the habitat of M. temama in the town of Zapoapan, Parque Nacional Cañón del Río (PNCRB), Veracruz, Mexico. Methodology. During January to October 2021, eight transects were established to record tracks, phototraps were installed to determine their presence, and Canfield lines were used to describe the vegetation in areas with the presence of the species. Results. Twenty-three tracks of M. temama were recorded: nine tracks (39%), six excreta (26%), three foraging tracks (13%), three stalls (13%) and two photocaptures (8%), equivalent to an index tracks of 0.57 individuals/ha or 2.2 ha/individual, low density compared to other reports of the species. The habitat presented a richness of 19 species of plants, the shrubs being more abundant (36%) than the herbaceous and arboreal (represented by 32% each); the tree layer was dominant in terms of height and diameter. Implications. These results suggest that the habitat does not have sufficient diversity of resources to maintain a dense population of M. temama. Conclusion. The population density of M. temama in the PNCRB was low associated with a restricted carrying capacity in the study area, so actions must be taken towards the conservation and sustainable use of the population of this species.Antecedentes.
