Background. The mutualistic interaction with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) is one of the main strategies used by plants to improve their absorption of nutrients and cope with adverse environmental conditions. They are ubiquitous microorganisms that help maintain soil health and crop nutrition, which is why they are considered an essential component in agroecosystems. However, its presence is affected by multiple biotic and abiotic factors such as tree cover and management intensity. Objective. Evaluate and compare the AMF communities and tree cover of the main agroecosystems present in the Usumacinta Canyon Flora and Fauna Protection Area (APFFCU) in the humid tropics of southeastern México. Methodology. The abundance of spores and the number of AMF morphospecies and the density and diversity of trees were counted in 25 plots of the agroecosystems Potrero (P), Milpa (M), Huerto Familiar (HF), Acahual (A) and Plantación Forestal (PF). An Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was applied to the set of data obtained from each variable to detect the presence of significant differences between each of the agroecosystems evaluated. Likewise, to observe the effect between the variables, the Pearson correlation analysis was carried out. Finally, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was carried out to visualize the grouping of the study plots. Results. The ANOVA detected significant differences when comparing the variables of interest. The highest abundance of spores was found in P and PF, while A and PF presented the highest richness of AMF morphospecies. Acaulosporaceae and Glomeraceae were the most representative families and Acaulospora kentinensis was the only morphospecies that was observed in all the agroecosystems evaluated. The highest values of tree density and diversity were observed in A. The lowest tree density was present in P and the lowest tree diversity in PF. The PCA allowed us to group the plots with the highest tree density, spore abundance and morphospecies richness on average. Implications. The information derived from this study highlights the importance of the presence of trees in agricultural productivity and the design of long-term sustainable agroecosystems. Conclusion. It was concluded that the AMF communities of the agroecosystems evaluated in the APFFCU vary in spore abundance and morphospecies richness, which is correlated with the characteristics of their tree cover.Antecedentes. Background. CARACTERIZACIÓN DE SISTEMAS DE PRODUCCIÓN LECHERA Y SALUD DE LA UBRE EN EL NORTE DE ANTIOQUIA, COLOMBIA
Background: The sociodemographic characterization of milk producers allows knowing their particular conditions in terms of social, political and economic structure through indicators that describe them as social actors, interaction networks, conflict situations and events related to milk production. Objective: To characterize the diversity of dairy production systems in Northern Antioquia with a focus on the producer, the farms, access to services and their impact on the biological indicators of udder health. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was designed that including 216 milk producers within distributed in 9 dairy municipalities in northern Antioquia. Surveys to characterize the producer, the farm and access to services for health and milk production were carried out. As biological indicators of udder health, the annual averages of bulk tank somatic cell counts (BTSCC) and colony-forming units (CFU) of each farm were analyzed. Statistical analyzes were performed with SPSS version 25.0 and a p < 0.05. Results: The biological indicators of udder health in the studied farms presented poor sanitary quality according to the BTSCC for 67 % of the producers and poor hygienic quality with CFU in for 22 % of the participating farms. Briceño producers showed the lowest production in contrast to Santa Rosa de Osos milk producers, who have the highest production. In the linear regression models, 18.2 % of the BTSCC was explained by the location in relation to the municipality, the size of the production system and the type of milking. The CFU values were explained in 29.8 % by the municipality, the cooperative association or livestock association, the milk storage system, the offer of laboratory services for milk and cows, the area of the farm dedicated to grazing, the number of animals on the farm and the average daily production per cow. Implications: This study shows the importance of understanding udder health issues not only at the cow level from a biomedical approach. The understanding of udder health from the farm in the sociodemographic context shows that its location, access to services, technology, education and associativity establish opportunities to improve production and competitiveness of milk production. Conclusions: udder health can be positively or negatively affected by the location of the production system, the size of the production system, the type of milking, the association to a cooperative or livestock association, the milk storage system, the supply of laboratory services for milk and cows, the area of the farm dedicated to grazing, the number of animals on the farm and the average daily production per cow. To consider these variables is fundamental in decision-making in mastitis control and preventive care for udder health.
Background. Schaeffer's formula has been promoted as an alternative to animal weighting in recent years. However, no studies evaluating the Schaeffer formula in the Black Belly hair sheep breed have been developed. Objective. To evaluate Schaeffer's formula for predicting body weight in male and female Black Belly sheep reared under tropical conditions. Methodology. Body weight (BW, kg), thoracic circumference (TC, cm) and body length (BL, cm) were recorded in 120 Black Belly lambs (60 females and 60 males). The lambs were clinically healthy and aged between 6 and 8 months. Schaeffer's formula for calculating BW was BW (kg) = (BL × TC2)/10838. First, the distributions of the values were examined by means of a histogram showing both sets of values simultaneously. The medians of each set were then obtained and statistically compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to test the null hypothesis of no difference between the two sets of measurements considered. Results. In the present study it was observed that Shaeffer's formula underestimated BW in Black Belly sheep (P<0.05) at about 5.84 kg. This weight represents about 20.40% of the observed mean BW. The underestimation was also much greater than expected in males at approximately 6.88 kg, this weight represents approximately 22.40% of the observed mean BW in males. However, for females the difference was 4.09 kg. This weight represents approximately 15.40% of the observed mean BW for females. Implications. Caution should be exercised in using the Schaffer formula for estimating liveweight in black belly sheep, or some adjustment to this equation should be evaluated to increase its precision and accuracy for predicting liveweight in hair sheep breeds. Conclusion. Under the conditions in which the present study was carried out, it was concluded that Shaeffer's formula underestimated BW in Black Belly sheep. The estimated BW differed from the observed BW (P<0.05), and this parameter was underestimated much more than expected in males than in females, showing that this formula is not accurate in estimating BW in male and female Black Belly sheep. As a result, estimates should be treated with caution. There is a need to develop improved prediction equations for adequate estimation of BW of male and female Black Belly sheep.Antecedentes.

Background: Goats are increasingly being used as surgical models in animal experiments. Some ruminant parasitological studies require collecting adult nematodes directly from the abomasum of donor animals. A methodology to collect those adult worms in vivo could avoid the unnecessary sacrifice of donor animals. Objective: To describe an abomasotomy technique to obtain adult Haemonchus contortus from live goats and evaluate the immediate post-surgical recovery time. Methodology: Nine worm-free adult goats were infected with 6000 H. contortus L3. The monospecific infection was confirmed on day 28 post-infection. The anesthetic procedure included fentanyl (10 μg * kg BW-1 load dose (LD) and 10 μg * kg BW-1 hour in constant-rate-infusion (CRI), lidocaine (2 mg * kg LD-1 and 50 μg * kg BW-1 minute CRI), ketamine (1.5 mg * kg-1 and 50 μg * kg BW-1 min CRI) and propofol (4 mg * kg LD-1 and 0.4 mg * kg BW-1 min CRI). The surgical protocol consisted of eight “surgical time-points”. Purposeful animal movement in response to surgical stimulation, or any changes in the autonomic response (> 20% from baseline values of HR and arterial blood pressure (SAP, MAP, and DAP)) were used as criteria to identify trans-surgical nociception. Post-surgical pain was evaluated once daily with the wound healing evaluation. Results: The surgical protocol lasted 1 h, allowing the recovery of adult H. contortus from live goats. The anesthetic protocol successfully controlled trans-surgical pain, with only two animals crossing the HR threshold (>20%) from T2 to T6. Post-surgical recovery (“time to extubation” and “time to standing”) was achieved before 1 h, while animals consumed water after only 4 h post-surgery. Goats did not require rescue analgesia, and suture withdrawal was achieved 7 days post-surgery without complications. Impications: The abomasotomy technique here described can be used for parasitological studies in small ruminants when the collection of nematodes is required from live animals. Conclusions: The anesthetic and surgical protocol here described is a viable and rapid alternative for the collection of nematodes from the abomasum of live goats with minimal pain and rapid postsurgical recovery.
