A REVIEW OF LITERATURE ON URBAN SPRAWL USING BIBLIOMETRIC TECHNIQUE
Urban sprawl is the broad research topic in urban studies. Thus far, the debate on the causes and consequences of urban sprawl has not led to a widely accepted interpretative framework. This paper attempts to review publications on urban sprawl factors and causes extracted from two largest scientific databases namely Scopus and ScienceDirect. The time of publication was set from 1996 to 2015 with 20 years’ gap. The citation-based approach analysis was used to provide better vision regarding this topic where the journal articles are selected by using identified keywords from wide-ranging fields that cover built environment, geography, planning, architecture, engineering, economics, transportation, health, social and spatial technologies.
Subsequently, the factor and causes of urban sprawl were extracted from each publication and reviewed. The findings is presented in different categories including (i) socio-demographic, (ii) economic, (iii) political, (iv) physical, (v) environment, and (vi) transportation, pertinent to the formation of urban sprawl. The findings from this paper contribute in defining urban sprawl based on its factor and causes which cover broader context of built environment. The future improvement includes developing land use geospatial indices based on the outcome of this paper
ASSESSING THE MISUSE IN NEIGHBORHOOD OPEN SPACE ACCORDING TO PARK BYLAWS (MBPJ 2005)
Parks is an example of open spaces where people can enjoy active and passive activities during free times to escape from the hustle and bustle of city living. Policies and guidelines have been implemented by the local authorities so that the public parks and open spaces in their area of jurisdiction are convenient to be used as well as to ensure public safety. This study aimed to identify and understand; the misuse of neighbourhood open spaces in the area of Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) jurisdiction according to the Parks Bylaws (MBPJ 2005). Six (6) open spaces have been chosen namely; Taman Jaya in Section 10, several neighbourhood open spaces located at Section 13, Section 14, Section 17, Section 19 and last but not least, Taman Aman in Section 22.
The methodologies used are questionnaire survey that obtained a sample size of 90 respondents and in-depth interview session with the officers from the Landscape Department of MBPJ. This study found that; illegal dumping, vandalism, and illegal placement of posters and advertisements are the main offenses occurring in the neighbourhood open spaces while illegal parking, indecent behaviour and walking the dogs in the parks were found to be the example of minor offences. This study deduced that violation of Parks Bylaws occurred mainly due to the lack of awareness and public involvement. The study also outlines several suggestions to address the issues encountered in order to reduce problems regarding the misuse of open spaces which can lead to better usage of the open space
IDENTIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PTEROPLINTHITE MANGROVE FORESTS
Mangroves are highly beneficial as they have many environmental and social functions. This paper is aimed at identifying the unique characteristics of Pteroplinthite Mangrove Forest which is one of the mangrove types in Peninsular which has never been documented so far. This kind of mangrove can support numerous residents and non-residents species. It is important to find out the abiotic and biotic factors affecting how they perceive with their surroundings. The study is also expected to explore the most intrinsic value of Pteroplinthite Mangrove Forests that can be integrated as a landscape design element. These intrinsic values of this mangrove forest are being manipulated to be integrated into the urban landscape design setting.
The data collection involved the observation, site inventory, determination of physicochemical contents of seawater, and collected sample plants and soil that is conducted in two selected areas, namely Pasir Panjang, Port Dickson and Kuala Linggi, Melaka. The main finding shows the analysis of abiotic and biotic factors of pteroplinthite mangrove that have their own potential and there have eight of intrinsic characters that had been highlighted in the both selected areas of this mangrove forest. It is hoped that this paper may provide significant information on the characteristics of pteroplinthite mangrove forests towards understanding the ecological or functional values of Pteroplinthite mangrove forest habitat as potential approach to be integrated in landscape ecology to restore their habitats and plant species from becoming threatened or extinct
POTENTIAL OF SMALL GARDEN OF DOUBLE STOREY LINKED-HOUSES: THERMAL PERFORMANCE AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT
Linked-houses is a housing type that comes with its front yard and backyard. It provides the extra outdoor spaces for the occupants. Many would utilize these spaces following their house extension and renovation projects. Some may not be aware of its potential as green spaces that they may neglect the front yard and backyard by not making full use of them. This paper seeks to study the effect of front yard and backyard on the thermal performance of the outdoor and indoor spaces of linked-houses by comparing the air temperature readings of two units of double-storey linked-houses located in the urban area of Kuala Lumpur. Unit 1 represents a house with its front yard and back yard heavily planted. Unit 2 represents the typical renovation that takes place where its front yard is paved while its back yard is minimally extended and with simple kitchen garden. INDIVIDUALITY OF ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS AS A SELJUKID DESIGN PRINCIPLE
This paper aims to accentuate an interesting aspect within the Seljukid architecture: Individuality. In different regions, buildings and scales seem to give each architectural element an own identity and hence becoming an artistic principle. Due to the scarce scientific research about the Seljukid period, especially the lack of interdisciplinary analysis, and the Seljuk’s experience of a rapid development in political and cultural sense, it is difficult to clarify the reasons of the mentioned principle. In this essay some examples will be displayed of the mentioned phenomenon and possible explanations of some scholars. HEALTHY LIVING ENVIRONMENT IN KUALA LUMPUR PUBLIC PARKS
Providing a healthy living environment is one of the key issues for planners and designers. Various urban design and planning approaches have been debated worldwide to provide healthy living. Rapid urbanization and its impact on social, environmental and health quality. These issues are more acute in developing countries than in developed countries. Urban public parks offer many opportunities for urban dwellers to achieve a healthy living environment. Thus, this paper investigates people’s interaction with open space and the benefits of urban parks in Kuala Lumpur. Opinions of visitors from the nine urban parks in Kuala Lumpur were collected to address the aim of the research. Various levels of urban park such as the city parks, district and neighborhood parks were investigated. The parks represent all five districts in Kuala Lumpur. Altogether, 47 respondents were interviewed at seven parks. Information collected through the interview survey was analyzed using qualitative analysis techniques.
The research indicate that people are involved with active and passive activities in urban public parks. The result showed that 65.42% of respondents participated in active activities such as jogging and exercise. Meanwhile, 34.57% preferred passive activities such sightseeing, rest and relaxation. The results also indicated that, when people interact with nature, 39.08% agreed that social integration is the greatest benefit of their urban living environment. Secondly, 28.74% agreed on health benefit. Thirdly, 18.39% agreed that urban parks could provide environmental benefits and lastly was the benefits of parks management (11.49%). Finally, the study concluded that a healthy living environment can be promoted through frequent visits to urban parks by participating in activities and nature appreciation. Therefore, it is important to enhance the green strategies within urban planning and design strategy to improve healthy living
LANDSCAPE ETHNOBOTANICAL STUDY OF MALAY MIDWIFERY PLANT SPECIES: CASE STUDY OF KELANTAN
Traditional Malay midwifery practices in Kelantan exhibit a wide variation in plant materials selection. This study established that plant materials composition selection differs greatly with respect to stage of midwifery practices, locality, environmental factors and culture. A total of 6 types of Malay midwifery practices using plants were observed in 5 different localities in Kelantan. Lenggang perut practice was performed during prenatal treatment whereas another five practices (bertangas, bertungku, berparam, berpilis and mandi serom) were performed during postnatal treatment. In relation of creating Malay garden identity, the findings established that the most influential factor appeared to be stage of Malay midwifery practices. Each practice has specific purposes and functions which later determine the accumulation of plant materials selection.
Of all the Malay midwifery practices studied in this research we found that mandi serom is the most diverse plant species used which portray the habitat or type of environments in which these plant species origins or found. There may be similarities of some species due to similar knowledge, culture or environment; however, the magnitude of these effects is not as great as plant materials composition selection and usage. By identifying the key factors controlling plant materials selection and usage a greater understanding of how certain midwifery practices influence plant species selection and composition in response to interactions with environmental factors as well as culture, belief and taboos will emerge as potential softscape elements tools and indicator in creating identity of Malay landscape for specific culture and locality
APPLICATION OF BINDU AND MANDALA AS A MODEL FOR CULTURAL AND SACRED ARCHITECTURE
This paper examines the concept of Vastu Purusha through “bindu†and “mandala†which have been the primary form generators in the architecture of several Asian cultures and particularly in India. Through literary resources this paper examines the ability of Sri Yantra to unpack itself into various progressive spatial geometries that have inherent relationships which attain its final form as the “mandalaâ€, which is also known as the “mask of God through which eternity is to be achieved.†The “mandala†is the Hindu cosmic model through which the Buddhist cosmic thinking is evolved. The first part of this paper discusses about the mandala model and its systematic structure which inspires in constructing spatial systems that build architectural spaces.The pioneering practice for three decades in architecture forms the basis of practice based research methodology. This will examine the real time architectural projects that demonstrate how the various elements of nature that manifests within the mandala and the geometries help generate an ephemeral form as a symbol of spirituality and awakening of consciousness. The objective of this paper is to present the work on a “Peace Museum†project in Sri Lanka which bridges the spiritual philosophy of Hindu-Buddhist culture, where the mandala evolves a paradigm for a contemporary architectural thought associated with the sacredness of built spaces
