IMPACT OF THE ORGANIC NATURAL FORM ON THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE HIGH-RISE BUILDING
The nature is one of the most important sources of inspiration for those who study, analyse and imitated by meditating the architectural forms with substance of the colors, formations and mechanisms of their components and elements. Designers inspired symbols and elements of nature are mostly regulated their design by those elements in the light of what is owned by nature. The various forms features, diversity, balance, adaptation and analogy. The designers involve finding design solutions by mimicking nature through imitation of forms in nature, functions and environmental systems which are learning from the genius balanced and aesthetic.The nature of the systems, materials and processes, structures, are the best way to inspire solutions to reach sustainability desired and more effectively. Literature review mentions the role of nature form Biomimicry strategy in generating sustainable form, and its applications in the design of high-rise buildings to make it sustainable. In addition, these characteristic effects on the building efficiency, provide comfort to its users. therefore the research objective is how the natural form achieve to sustainability in high-rise building, the methodolgy is qulititive by using the stratagy of investigation through use the method of observation by selection of two organic form projects, the first one is (Al-Bahar tower) in Abu-Dhabi, and the second is (Cactus building) in Dhoha
HEALTHY LIVING ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC PARKS: A CASE STUDY OF KUALA LUMPUR
Providing a healthy living environment is one of the key issues for planners and designers. Various urban design and planning approaches have been debated worldwide to provide healthy living. Rapid urbanization impacts on social, environmental and health quality. These issues are more acute in developing countries than in developed countries. Urban public parks offer many opportunities for urban dwellers to achieve a healthy living environment. Thus, this paper investigates people’s interaction with open space and the benefits of urban parks in Kuala Lumpur. Opinions of visitors from the nine urban parks in Kuala Lumpur were collected to address the aim of the research. Various levels of urban park such as the city parks, district and neighbourhood parks were investigated. The parks represent all five districts in Kuala Lumpur. Altogether, 47 respondents were interviewed at seven parks. Information collected through the interview survey was analysed using qualitative analysis techniques. The research indicates that people are interacting with active and passive activities in urban public parks. The result showed that 65.42% of respondents participated in active activities such as jogging and exercise.Meanwhile, 34.57% preferred to have passive activities such sightseeing, rest and relaxation. The results also indicated that, when people interact with nature, 39.08% agreed that the benefit of social integration is the greatest benefit of their urban living environment. Secondly, 28.74% on health point of view. Thirdly, 18.39% agreed that urban parks could provide environmental benefits and lastly was the benefits of parks management (11.49%). Finally, the study concluded that a healthy living environment can be promoted through frequent visits to urban parks by participating in activities and nature appreciation. Therefore it is important to enhance the green strategies within urban planning and design strategy to improve healthy living.Â
THE DOCUMENTATION OF ALEPPINE`AJAMI ROOMS FROM THE OTTOMAN PERIOD
The objective of this paper is to document the polychrome wooden `ajami rooms. Aleppo is the second largest city in Syria (after the capital Damascus) and is the commercial capital of Syria. Aleppo has a long history, extending from the third millennium B.C to the Islamic era. Aleppo flourished and became a very important station on the Silk Road. Later, Aleppo became a part of the Ottoman Empire from 1516 to 1918, and the third largest city in the Ottoman Empire after Istanbul and Cairo.  As part of this empire, local Aleppine architects and craftsmen combined their techniques and cultural heritage with Ottoman culture. This research employs a historical, photographic and descriptive approach to document the ‘ajami rooms by using mostly the photographs, that were taken by the first author in 2006. Since 2012 much of Syria’s architectural heritage has been destroyed due to internal war.  In Aleppo, the losses in both the ancient and modern parts of the city have been tremendous including some traditional houses with ‘ajami. This paper will highlight some recommendations to protect the ajami rooms from the current conflict and restore it for future use
A REVIEW OF LITERATURE ON URBAN SPRAWL: ASSESSMENT OF FACTORS AND CAUSES
Urban sprawl is a broad research topic in urban studies. Thus far, the debate on the causes and consequences of urban sprawl has not led to a widely accepted interpretative framework. This paper attempt to review publications on urban sprawl factors and causes extracted from two largest scientific databases namely Scopus and ScienceDirect. The time of publication was set from 1996 to 2015 with 20 years’ gap. The citation-based approach analysis was use to provide better vision regarding this topic where the journal articles are selected by using identified keywords from wide-ranging fields that cover built environment, geography, planning, architecture, engineering, economics, transportation, health, social and spatial technologies.Subsequently, the factor and causes of urban sprawl were extracted from each publication and reviewed. The findings are presented in different categories including (i) socio-demographic, (ii) economic, (iii) political, (iv) physical, (v) environment, and (vi) transportation, pertinent to the formation of urban sprawl. The findings from this paper contribute in defining urban sprawl based on its factor and causes which cover broader context of built environment. The future improvement includes developing land use geospatial indices based on the outcome of this paper
CONCEPT OF KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY’S PERSPECTIVE
Sustainable development was introduced to generate a balanced national development from the economic growth, environmental protection, and social equality. However, the development demands implemented in Malaysia have been causing various damages and destructions to the environment, inviting social problems and economic imbalances. Rapid development in construction industries observed only for profiting and ignores the well-being of the environment. Hence, initiatives should be taken to overcome the growing crisis and arouse awareness in sustainable development.Therefore, knowledge of sustainable development is important to all relevant parties in the industries. Knowledge transfer is a medium and the best platform to convey the information and knowledge about the sustainable development of individual, department, organization and agencies. However, the knowledge transfer practices are still needed room for improvement and need more efforts to turn it out as a culture among the players. In relation to that, the objective of this study to observe the existing method of knowledge transfer practices, understanding the existing method, the application of the methods used in carrying out the tasks of every department and improvements can be made to strengthen the current practices for achieving the goal of sustainable development at the local authority level
DAY LIGHTING ANALYSIS IN VERNACULAR HOUSES OF RURAL KARNATAKA, INDIA
Day lighting is an important passive strategy for indoor architecture which helps in reducing the consumption of electrical energy or reliability on artificial lighting, thus enhancing the psychologically and physiologically effects on the health and wellbeing of building occupants. Â The paper analyses the day lighting in typical rural houses more specifically, three vernacular residential dwellings in Mala village situated in Karkala District, Karnataka, India. The survey includes enlisting or recording building materials used in construction, dimensioning individual rooms, doors and window openings and total number of lighting fixtures used in each room. Ratio of window to floor area (AW/AR) is calculated in each room of the dwellings. Monitoring the daylight and further, illuminance at various levels is measured with the help of Lux meter . Three houses are further simulated using ECOTECT2011- software. The ratios of areas of window to floor of each room in all the houses are less than 10% resulting into poor illuminance. The quality of the light inside the kitchen was still poor. Adopting few strategies like making wall surfaces more reflective and few modifications in the grill patterns will help to increase the indoor illumination
MITIGATING CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH GREEN ROOF IMPLEMENTATION: A REVIEW OF SIGNIFICANT LITERATURE
Climate change is a threat to the world. Problems resulting from climate change such as global warming, floods, environmental pollution, high carbon dioxide emissions, and loss of biodiversity may be solved by the implementation of green roofs. Green roof benefits the environment, economy, aesthetics, and recreation and are proven effective through studies conducted from around the world. This paper reviews the existing literature on green roof benefits and performance and specifically focuses on their potential to address climate change issues. A review of significant literature on green roof performance and benefits is the method of this study. From the review, it is proven that green roofs have the potential to reduce problems related to climate change. The depth of a green roof substrate is a key factor that can optimize potential benefits. Thus, intensive types of green roofs provide significant contribution towards reducing storm water runoff; mitigate the urban heat island effect and pollution; increased biodiversity; and carbon sequestration. Local research is highly encouraged in mitigating climate change because the optimal performance of green roofs is subject to local climate and conditions.Â
INTERIOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGEMENT: PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTIVITY IN MALAYSIAN BUILDING INDUSTRY
The practice of Interior Design (ID), Architecture, Mechanical & Electrical and Facilities component drawings such as conceptual design and construction drawings would need to be integrated and coordinated between the consultants and the contractor drawings. All related drawings are required to be resolved and agreed upon, so as not to cause obstacles at the actual construction site and to improve the business performance in terms of time and cost of the project. A further review of the performance measured in the interior design construction industry also indicates that productivity is an inadequate measure for identifying improvement targets and control activities.The use of a more holistic set of measures is recommended in order to ensure more relevant and timely information. The purpose of this study is to explore the integration and coordination of the respective consultants’ involvement in the project construction management that will help clients on timing and costing of the projects. The lack of coordination between multidisciplinary scope of work within project construction managements in interior, architecture, and other related fields will increase time and cost of the ID Construction projects (IIDA Report, 1998)
