Los predicadores reales de Carlos II

    Get PDF
This article pursues the study of court preachers appointed during the reign of Charles II of Spain. The sacred oratory played an important role in the political evolution of that time. The preachers had entered the dangerous game of taking sides and gained an important presence in the events that were being lived out in the Real Alcázar. An analysis, therefore, of its sociological profile and evolution during the last years of the seventeenth century is proposed, with special emphasis on theprofound relationship of the pulpit of the Royal Chapel and the throne.

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the conception of the medical doctor that was developed by Fray Juan de Santa Gertrudis’ Medicina Lulliana in the context of the Hispanic controversies on medicine in the 18th century.  The purpose of this analyses is to show that this author, marked by specific biography studies in Mallorca and mission work in America, tried to define a new category of the ‘Lullist doctor’ which opposes d both dogmatic and skeptical categories. This study is divided in five parts: an introduction to the question; the study of the author's biography and the influence of his work in the Kingdom of New Granada on his writing; the situation of medicine in the 18th century; the foundations of Luis de Flandes’ El antiguo academico, the closest antecedent of Lullism applied to medicine; and the position and ideas articulated by the Medicina Lulliana together with three examples of Fray Juan's work in this field of knowledge. The hypothesis of this study is that the Medicina Lulliana breaks with the Lullist medical schemas of the 18th century and the scholarly approach to this science by opposing the practical model and, instead, proposes a particular definition of the figure of the doctor.

    Get PDF
This article investigates the patronage of the Lullian cult that the Franciscan friars of Palma of Majorca promoted. Through the centuries they were the defenders of religious and doctrinal Lullism. They organized ceremonies in the Church of Saint Francis and taught the doctrines of Llull in their convent. Focusing on the 18th century, this study analyzes the evolution of this patronage and the problems that the Franciscans encountered in protecting this devotion that came under persecution due to the reforms of Charles III and his bishops.

    Get PDF
The aim of this article is to provide a historiographical review of the presence of Ramon Llull’s thought in the Americas, which starts at the time of the discovery and conquest and spreads during the colonial period. Religious orders, in particular the Franciscans, played an important role in the diffusion of Llullist doctrines in the New World. We concentrate on the period from the discovery of America until the end of the 17th century. Focusing on the data known so far, we reconstruct a panorama that serves as a map indicating the location of the heirs to the thought of the Majorcan Blessed in the Americas. This study serves as the basis for a critical examination of this theme and establishes new approaches for future proposals and perspectives.

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the contributions of Fathers Rafel Ginard Bauçà, Miquel Colom Mateu, and Miquel Tous Gayà to Lullism during the post-war period. These three Franciscans were trained in the regionalist environment that existed in the years preceding the Spanish Civil War, and they experienced the Lullian exaltation that took place around the centennials of Ramon Llull’s death (1915) and his birth (1932). Ginard’s strong background in folklore and popular culture, Colom’s education in linguistics and lexicology, and Tous’ education in paleography were utilized to study and popularize Ramon Llull’s works. Some of their most important moments were the 1950 publication of the 21st volume of the Works of Ramon Lull and the creation of the Glossari General Lul·lià (in English: General Lullian Glossary; 1982-85) by Miquel Colom.

    Get PDF
The manuscript Aguiló 110 is a volume from the end of the 16th century or the beginning of the 17th that contains an extensive compilation of the works of Ramon Llull in verse. This article offers a detailed study of the manuscript and its content and proposes a thesis for the contextualization of its production. Both the philological and historical studies of the textual antecedents of this text and the study of other well documented manuscripts with a similar composition evince that the setting for the production of this manuscript might be the circle of Lullists in Mallorca. This circle was devoted to the study of the moral and devotional works of Ramon Llull and related to the defense of the Lullian Cause from the end of the 16th century to the first third of the 17th century

Barroco en Cuzco. Fiestas celebradas en 1603 y 1788

    Get PDF
The present article introduces two celebrations held in the imperial city of Cusco (Peru). The first one is a religious festival, organized in celebration of the enthronement of the picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Extremadura (Spain) and the foundation of a confraternity devoted to her. The second is a civil festival arranged on the establishment of the Royal Court of Justice by King Carlos III of Spain. Almost two centuries passed between both celebrations. This can demonstrate that Baroque celebrations and festivals always had the same structure, development, and constitutive elements, notwithstanding the reasons for celebrating, the institutions that organize them, and the programmed performances. All these festivals consist of a series of church services, cultural events, festive activities, and other performances. The memory of these celebrations is often preserved by chronicles, which have been used as the primary sources for this article. In addition, there is included a historical bibliography that shows festivals as human and social phenomena. All of them follow a similar model of complex structure, which later was referred to as the “Baroque festival”.Presentamos dos fiestas organizadas en la ciudad imperial del Cuzco, una religiosa y otra civil.

    Get PDF
This work intends to show how various reformers of a Franciscan leaning and some Beguines, men and women, exerted their influence in the Kingdom of Majorca (1276-1343). Among them stands out the Blessed Ramon Llull (1232-1316). We explain his relationship with these reformers, among whom we find those of the Order of the Apostles and the brother and sister, Felipe of Mallorca and Sancha of Naples, who were the children of Jaume II of Mallorca and Esclaramunda de Foix. Both of these children clearly ascribed to a radical form of Franciscanism. The Franciscan Spiritual, Angelo Clareno, had a special influence on Prince Felipe. We compare the main lines of reform of these Franciscans and briefly allude to the Beguines and the Order of the Apostles. Llull emphasized the importance of poverty; however, his missionary approach ad extra or ad gentes, stands out from all the other people and groups mentioned. Llull represents a major contrast to the radical Franciscans, or fraticelli, given his indisputable adhesion to the verdicts of the Roman See.En este trabajo pretendemos mostrar como en el reino de Mallorca (1276-1343), surgieron o se cruzaron diversos reformadores, de inspiración franciscana y de los beguinos/as.
