Statistical inspection and analysis techniques for traffic data arising from the internet
The statistical characterization of measurements arising from Internet traffic requires specific analysis and estimation techniques since the underlying traffic characteristics are often distributed with heavy tails. Here we provide a survey of fast and simple methods to detect the heaviness of tails and dependence in traffic data. We consider the dependence of both univariate and bivariate data. Important practical problems regarding the dependence between the transmission rate and file size or the time of transmission are dis-cussed as well. Finally, the recommended tools are illustrated by applications to real Web, TCP and video data
Perceived eco-friendliness and perceived quality of consumer products : A theoretical and empirical investigation
Dissertation, Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, 2026This thesis aimed to address two central questions: 1) How are perceived eco-friendly products defined and conceptualized?, 2) What are the relationships between perceived eco-friendliness and perceived quality? To this aim, working definitions have been established first, followed by a systematic review of the existing literature. The author conducted an interview-based qualitative study using grounded theory and quantitatively evaluated the resulting model using structural equation modelling. Among its key contributions, the thesis introduces a novel multidimensional conceptualization of perceived eco-friendliness, provides a synthesis of the relationships between perceived eco-friendliness and perceived quality, and proposes additional influencing constructs. Finally, the limitations of this work are discussed, avenues for future research are outlined, and the theoretical and managerial implications are presented
This contribution is a report on an intermediate linguistic seminar entitled Using Corpora for Writing Skills. Its overarching goal is to enable students to use corpora, (i. e. large computer-searchable text databases) independently, routinely, and confidently for a variety of purposes. Besides acquiring the basics of corpus research, they practise applications to different central topics of foreign language learning, such as prepositional choices, collocations, confusable homonyms and synonyms, register differences, grammar issues and varieties of English. Emphasis is placed on an appropriate evaluation of the results. Overall, the course received very positive feedback and the willingness of participants to use corpora was significantly higher at the end of each semester than at its beginning. However, what could be established as a major challenge is the fact that students tend to hold on to their binary judgements of right and wrong. Teacher education should thus foster a corpus skillset as a handy tool in everyday school life, along with an open mindset that involves acceptance of heterogeneous corpus data as fully legitimate variation
Associations between online child sexual solicitation and abuse and offline child maltreatment : A latent class analysis
The increasing integration of digital technologies into daily life has led to a rise in online child sexual solicitation and abuse (OCSSA), posing significant risks to young people. Understanding how OCSSA is associated with other forms of offline child maltreatment is essential for improving diagnosis, treatment, and support in child and adolescent psychiatry. This study aims to identify the co-occurrence of OCSSA with other forms of offline child maltreatment experienced before the age of 18 in Germany. To most accurately assess the current reality among children and adolescents, the study surveyed a nationally representative sample of 1,006 participants in Germany, following indicator 16.2.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals, and assessed experiences of OCSSA and other forms of offline child maltreatment. Participants completed the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire and screening questions measuring OCSSA. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify exposure profiles. The resulting subgroups were compared using Chi-Square-Tests and Mann-Whitney-U-Tests. The LCA revealed two classes: 85.39% of participants were classified as ‘predominantly OCSSA’ victims, while 14.61% experienced ‘poly-victimization’, primarily associated with OCSSA and emotional maltreatment. The two classes significantly differed regarding relationship status, education, and equivalence income. The findings highlight increased vulnerability to online victimisation in the digital age and emphasize the interplay between online and offline maltreatment, particularly for those who have experienced multiple forms of victimisation. They emphasize the need for early identification and improved risk assessment, early preventive strategies, and specific therapeutic interventions in child and adolescent psychiatric care
September 2025 in Bamberg
Vom 22. - 25.09.2025 hat die Universitätsbibliothek Bamberg die 9. European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL) ausgerichtet.
Challenges for Federated Crowd Management in Smart Cities
This paper addresses the issue of crowd management in smart cities, where effectively handling large groups is essential for ensuring safety and a positive experience for all. Although smart cities strive to use data for better decision-making, simply measuring crowds is not enough; cities must analyze and utilize this data intelligently. In this paper, we leverage the various experiences of two research groups in this area and present a vision that allows cities to easily establish crowd management platforms by transferring knowledge and insights from similar use cases in other cities
Data-Based Craft : How Data Scientists Craft Their Data, Models, and Products
In this study, we examine the work of data scientists, members of an emerging technical occupation, through the lens of craft. Drawing on 65 in-depth interviews with data scientists, we show that their work cannot be adequately explained by the human-machine configurations characterized in the existing literature on craft in technical occupations, which primarily focuses on crafting products using ready-to-use tools and ready-to-be-processed materials. Instead, we find that data scientists craft not only their products, but also their tools and materials, often in an iterative and non-linear fashion. This distinct approach entails a unique human-machine-data configuration that we refer to as data-based craft, which stems from the unique nature of digital data and learning algorithms that data scientists simultaneously craft and use. This study advances our understanding of craft in the digital age by highlighting the need to reconceptualize human-machine relationships in data-intensive occupations
