Action Research: organising a virtual conference on science education justice and inclusion
Action Research is usually concerned with formal teaching and teachers, in schools and universities. In this case, the practitioner is a science education researcher engaged in Science Education for Social Justice. It is an account of organising and implementing a virtual conference on Inclusion within this theme. It is also about broadening our understanding of Action Research to include the work of science education researchers. Naturally, very little has already been written about the role of science education conference organisers, or about conferences on science education for social justice. Nevertheless, in the spirit of opening up a distinctly new avenue for research, and one that is directly relevant to teachers of the sciences and teacher educators in the sciences, this paper is offered for consideration.
The research question was: what are the characteristics and challenges of organising a conference on Science for Global Justice: Inclusion?
The experiment was designed to include both the theme for papers and the process of running the conference.
Data in the form of the first paper for the conference (available at iosteflipped.wikispaces.com) contained the literature research on the benefits and challenges of organising a virtual conference on Inclusion and to be Inclusive, in Science Education Research. The first paper also contained a convenor\u27s commentary on the process
Teacher roles during inquiry-based teaching in the early-years
Many teachers are at a loss when required to use inquiry-based teaching / learning in their classrooms. Yet, most teachers would agree that investigative science via inquiry based teaching and learning is a highly effective way to teach science. Students build their scientific understanding and investigative skills through scientific inquiry where they make connections between prior knowledge and new ideas – but what role does the teacher play in this? There is a long list of authors who describe inquiry-based lessons in classrooms. However much of this is in relation to the student during the inquiry teaching / learning process (e.g. the Learning Cycle; 5E’s and 4E x 2), with scant research available providing a description of the role of the teacher. The descriptions that are available are quite broad and possibly of little use to a teacher who is seeking a detailed or step by step guide for open inquiry pedagogies. This paper will therefore use classroom studies to describe, the role of the teacher in the initial stages of an inquiry based teaching / learning project
Teaching tools and the quality of science education: some reflections
During the years 2014 and 2015 developed a survey in order to collect data and reflect on the relationship between the quality of teaching and learning science and the tools and teaching resources used, with the participation of five students from the Biological Sciences, belonging to a public University of São Paulo, Brazil; five teachers and about 120 students, divided into four different classes of middle school. The methodology involved document analysis, records of teaching episodes, identification and analysis of teaching tools. Activities that aroused most interest were: games, videos and hands-on activities like watching slides in microscopes and magnifying glasses in structures, organization of a garden, strawberry DNA extraction and assembly models of the solar system. The students showed great interest during the explanation of the contents, mainly while the materials were demonstrated. Despite research in science teaching area present analyzes, discussions and productions of different resources and teaching materials, which can diversify, streamline and better prepare the lessons, the results just are applied in real situations in class, seeking to improve the quality of teaching and learning. Hence the importance of making enforcement activities and analysis of different resources, instruments and teaching activities. It is vital to establish partnerships between universities and schools as institutions that produce, test, analyze and evaluate the tools, resources, and activities used in teaching to seek improvements in built learning
The influence of scientific discourse on student´s understanding of biodiversity complexity
Biodiversity is a main concept to biology understanding. The biodiversity includes three hierarchical levels, comprising from genes to ecosystem. Additionally, biodiversity has a major role to Science education, because it supports citizens to understand environmental questions from local until global levels. Our research group produces investigative didactic sequences (IDS) based on the references of Biological Sciences and Science Education (scientific literacy and the teaching by research). The activities of the IDS in this research had the intention of introduce students to the scientific ways of knowing the world, bringing them closer to the practices of scientific community. So this IDS present a scientific discourse marked throughout all its activities. Accordingly, the aim of this work is to understand which influence the scientific discourse of the investigative didactic sequence plays to the student\u27s comprehension of the complex biodiversity concept. The didactic was applied to 31 students of the second year of high school. It totalized 16 classes of 50 minutes each. Data from this research are the written records of students along the activities proposed by the IDS. We use the concept of classification proposed by Bernstein to analyze the influence of scientific discourse on the student´s answers. In addition, we build another instrument to investigate the biodiversity complexity comprehension. Our data suggest that the predominant scientific discourse in IDS provided students to solve the problems proposed by using the scientific language rather than common sense. They extended their comprehension of biodiversity complexity by producing a higher number of associations of this concept with other concepts of biology (intradisciplinarity). Thus, this is one way of appropriating citizens with scientific knowledge so that they can act more critically, and then help to build a more sustainable society
