Multiculturalism and harmony: Unpacking the challenges and critical needs with special reference to United Arab Emirates
People from various cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds peacefully coexist in the United Arab Emirates. Even though there are cultural and religious differences among different nationalities, there is no difference between them in terms of education or work. UAE is in general widely known as a multicultural country due to its diverse population which includes nationalities from two hundred different countries. Foreign nationalities are accommodated in different sectors like construction, health care, education and so on. Government policies contribute to tolerance and peaceful coexistence of Emiratis and foreign nationals. UAE recruit workers from different countries for the country’s development. This article aims (1) to analyse the nature and existence of multiculturalism in UAE, (2) to understand the challenges and needs of multiculturalism through secondary reviews, and (3) to explore the initiatives and activities for national integration in UAE
The musico-cultural integration process of David Fosberg on Death Metal Epic novels
David Fosberg – a young American bookseller based in Miami USA and an avid metal head – has a dream: to become a successful metal musician. After having “signed” a blood contract, he has a unique opportunity to go on a short European tour with the experimental death metal band Valhalla. Once in Europe, he experiences a lot of challenges and misfortunes while trying to accomplish the Eurometal dream. Hence, this article analyzes David’s new life in Gent, Belgium during the early 1990s, which involves both learning a new language -Dutch- and adapting himself to a different musical style: black metal. The novels used for such analyzes are the three Death Metal Epic novels: The Inverted Katabasis, Goat Song Sacrifice, and Sinister Synthesizer written by American novelist and metal music researcher Dean Swinford. This article emphasizes that such musico-cultural integration is both challenging and rewarding in terms of understanding different musico-cultural settings
Assessing the effect of trade and FDI on growth-unemployment nexus
Research background: Unemployment is a huge topic for policymakers, scholars, and, in general, society. Historically, there have always been a lot of discussions about this phenomenon. It is already acknowledged that unemployment is closely related to economic activity: when the economy is growing, more people are employed, and when economic activity is low, employment decreases, and unemployment rises. This relation is well-researched in the framework of Okun’s law. However, it is far less known how this relationship holds if international economic relations are introduced. Thus, the motivation for the research was to examine the role of international trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) on the growth-unemployment nexus.
Purpose of the article: To assess how trade and FDI affect growth and gender-, age-, and educational attainment level-specific unemployment relationship and on what scale this effect varies over different business cycle phases.
Methods: Scientific literature review, comparative analysis, and panel regression.
Findings & value added: Given the lack of research examining what effect FDI and trade have on the growth-unemployment nexus, this paper estimates modified Okun’s equation on the European Union (EU) countries (EU–28, by the composition of the EU until 31/01/2020) for the period from 2000 to 2019 while incorporating international aspects that can have an impact on this nexus. Also, this study develops a specification that can be useful to monitor the potentially different effects of FDI and trade on the growth-unemployment nexus during different business cycle phases. The estimations of the panel regression for unemployment disaggregated by age, gender and education level has showed that import, export, inward FDI, and outward FDI have a negative effect on the growth-unemployment nexus. It means that with an increase in the intensity of international economic relations, the influence of gross domestic product (GDP) growth on unemployment becomes less significant. Thus, the effectiveness of expansionary fiscal policy to reduce unemployment becomes less effective in more open economies, which in the case of the EU are the smallest member states with relatively small domestic markets
Would it have been cheaper to let them become unemployed? Costs and benefits of First Aid intervention for companies in Slovakia during the COVID-19 pandemic
Research background: The global COVID-19 pandemic, which started in the first quarter of 2020, triggered unprecedented economic challenges, prompting governments worldwide to implement intervention measures to mitigate its impacts on business and employment. Without the state’s financial help, many companies were forced to lay off their employees. Among these measures was the First Aid intervention program introduced in Slovakia in April 2020, aimed at providing financial support to companies facing operational disruptions and potential layoffs of their employees.
Purpose of the article: This study assesses the impact of the First Aid intervention program during the COVID-19 pandemic on unemployment in selected sectors, with an emphasis on the financial aspect, emphasising the international relevance and long-term implications of the state intervention in the crisis period. By analysing its effectiveness in preserving jobs and mitigating unemployment in selected sectors, the research seeks to offer valuable insights that can inform crisis response strategies and labour market policies in the country and beyond national borders.
Methods: Employing a counterfactual approach, we quantify the financial consequence of the First Aid+ intervention program on the state budget, comparing unemployment costs against the benefits of maintaining employment in targeted sectors. Through this methodological framework, we aim to provide a replicable model for evaluating the efficacy of intervention programs in different socio-economic contexts.
Findings & value added: Our analysis reveals not only the immediate impacts of the First Aid+ program on mitigating unemployment during the pandemic, but also its broader implications for policy and crisis management strategies. By elucidating the cost-benefit analysis of intervention measures, the research contributes to the effective labour market policies in times of crisis

Winning the innovation race: Insights from game theory and microeconomics
This study examines the impact of first-mover advantage on firms\u27 innovation processes from a microeconomic perspective, with a particular focus on game theory and the game of chicken. The primary research question is to ascertain how the timing of innovation affects a firm\u27s competitive advantage. The objective of the study is to gain insight into the factors that contribute to a successful first-mover strategy and to elucidate the manner in which these factors interact within the framework of game theory. Methodologically, the study employs game theory to analyse strategic decision-making in innovation, with a particular focus on the game of chicken to illustrate conflict scenarios in which firms compete for market advantage. The research examines the characteristics of firms, markets and products through a review of the literature in order to identify the key variables that contribute to first-mover advantage. The findings demonstrate that a number of internal factors (such as managerial capacity for innovation and the firm\u27s overall innovation capability), external factors (including participation in innovation networks and market orientation) and product characteristics (such as product class and environmental awareness) are significantly associated with an increased likelihood of a firm achieving first-mover advantage. In conclusion, the study confirms that firms that effectively manage these factors gain a competitive advantage by being the first to market
