A preliminary investigation of Salmonella populations in indigenous portuguese layer hen breeds

    Get PDF
The sustainability of agroecological systems, biodiversity protection, animal welfare, and consumer demand for higher quality products from alternative and extensive farming methods have reinforced interest in local breeds that are well adapted to low-input environments. However, food safety needs to be safeguarded to reinforce consumer confidence. The aim of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation on the occurrence of Salmonella spp. in eggshells, hen’s cloaca, and litter materials from autochthonous Portuguese laying hens raised in a semi-extensive system for small-scale production. A total of 279 samples from 31 flocks belonging to 12 farms were obtained, with 63 samples from the “Preta Lusitânica” breed, and 72 samples each from the remaining autochthonous breeds, namely, “Branca”, “Amarela”, and “Pedrês Portuguesa”. None (0%) of the samples analyzed were positive for Salmonella spp. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results of Salmonella evaluation from hen’s cloaca, eggshells, and litter materials in autochthonous Portuguese chickens, suggesting that a semi-extensive production system can contribute to better food security and a lower risk to public health and the environment.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/

The objective of the present study was to analyze and compare the setter's decision-making (DM) in the offensive construction of the side-out (attack from the reception) in high-level men's volleyball. The sample consisted of the analysis of 132 games of the Brazilian men's volleyball Super-League 2021/2022, with 22 games for each team. The results showed that the eigenvector values were higher for setting to position 3, central attacker next to the setter, simple block, and obtaining the attack point. In addition, the setter's DM was similar between teams, suggesting that the game strategies aim to provide subsidies for the setter to make the decisions according to the game context in a flexible way and generate benefits for the attackers about the number of blockers, being that under ideal conditions and due to the lifter's correct choices in distribution, central blockers avoid anticipating the setting, and this fact allows the conditions of a single block or double-broken blocks in most cases. As a practical application, setting for the central attacker in position 3 becomes an interesting option for point acquisition and is capable of influencing the number of blockers, as well as the optimal blocking condition. Another application would be for the central attacker to position themselves close to the setter, a strategy that would enable the use of the "pipe" attack in other areas of the court with lower defensive blocking power.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

Multidirectional jumping and repeated sprint ability are crucial performance factors in bas ketball. The main aim of this investigation was to examine the neuromuscular performance and bodybalance adaptations following basketball-specific combined training programs based on drop jump and multidirectional repeated sprint versus multidirectional plyometric training. Forty-two professional basketball male players participated in the current investigation and were randomly assigned to three groups: a combined group (COMB; n = 14), amul tidirectional jump group (MJG; n = 14) and an active control group (CON; n = 14). The COMBandtheMJGgroupscompletedthe8-weektraining programs with twoweekly sessions while the CON continued their usual training. The static and dynamic balance tests, the repeated sprint ability test (IRSA5COD), the T–change of direction (CoD) test, the vertical jump tests, the five time-jump test (FJT) were performed by participants before and after the intervention period. The results showed a significant main effect of time with remarkable improvements at the end of the intervention (P < 0.001, effect size small/moderate) except the physiological parameters for IRSA5COD. Only, significant group × time interactions for body balance, T-CoD test, IRSA5COD (total time and best time), and jump tests were found (P <0.001, effect size from trivial to moderate). Bonferroni corrected post-hoc tests revealed significantly greater improvement in favor of COMB compared to MJG for body balance, CoDandIRSA 5COD (P <0.005, effect size small/moderate). Otherwise, no significant differences between COMB and MJG concerning jump performances were found. Combined drop jump and multidirectional repeated sprint training program lead to significantly better neuromuscular performance, body balance and CoD in professional basketball players when compared with an usual training.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

    No full text
ABSTRACT In a school that promotes to be inclusive, the problem of pedagogical differentiation is a crucial matter on ensuring equal opportunities of success for all. Teaching everyone the same way, giving the same time does not matches with today’s educational contexts. The diversity of students and the heterogeneity of the classes (with regarding to the pace and learning styles, interests and motivations, different social and cultural contexts) require from teachers a special care to the individual necessities to create conditions so every student learns. The differentiated pedagogy is focused on the student, being the teacher an organizer of the learning situations. Therefore, this pedagogy must allow everyone to learn, independently of their social ethnic or cultural resources (Perrenoud, 1997). Differentiation involves providing a diversity of learning itineraries, adapting teachers’ teaching strategies to students' learning strategies (Pinharanda, 2009; Torre Ferreira, 2016). This communication expresses a study developed on behalf of postgraduate studies on “Administração Escolar e Inovação Educacional da ESE-IPVC” with the intention to contribute for the improvement project of the “Agrupamento de Escolas de Viana do Castelo”, due to an external evaluation programme. The study involved questionnaires written for the occasion, made of opened and closed questions, with the purpose to identify primary school teachers’ conceptions for those who are involved on this school team about this thematic currently being studied, as well as differentiation pedagogy practices carried out and conditioner and facilitators factors of this execution. The results achieved allowed to understand that, in general, teachers i) have a right perception about the differentiation pedagogy, even though some of the concepts have to be clarified; ii) teachers use some differentiation pedagogy strategies, although these may not always be intentional and regular; iii) identify constraints underlying the implementation of a differentiated pedagogy, situated, predominantly, at the organizational level. These results also fed the development of a proposal intervention project made towards the improvement organizational and pedagogical, laid on the creation of internal conditions to deepen the strategies of pedagogical differentiation incorporated on the teaching practices, and that can be reflected on the learning improvements.A11D-C969-8086 | Maria de Fátima de Sousa Pereirainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    a systematic review

Several studies have been conducted to find at least an association between physical activity (PA)/ physical exercise (PE) and the possibility to modulate the gut microbiome (GM). However, the specific effects produced on the human GM by different types of PA/PE, different training modalities, and their age-related effects are not yet fully understood. Therefore, this systematic review aims to evaluate and summarize the current scientific evidence investigating the bi-directional relationship between PA/PE and the human GM, with a specific focus on the different types/variables of PA/PE and age-related effects, in healthy and unhealthy people. A systematic search was conducted across four databases (Web of Science, Medline (PubMed), Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library). Information was extracted using the populations, exposure, intervention, comparison, outcomes (PICOS) format. The Oxford Quality Scoring System Scale, the Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool, and the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies were used as a qualitative measure of the review. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (code: CRD42022302725). The following data items were extracted: author, year of publication, study design, number and age of participants, type of PA/PE carried out, protocol/workload and diet assessment, duration of intervention, measurement tools used, and main outcomes. Two team authors reviewed 694 abstracts for inclusion and at the end of the screening process, only 76 full texts were analyzed. Lastly, only 25 research articles met the eligibility criteria. The synthesis of these findings suggests that GM diversity is associated with aerobic exercise contrary to resistance training; abundance of Prevotella genus seems to be correlated with training duration; no significant change in GM richness and diversity are detected when exercising according to the minimum dose recommended by the World Health Organizations; intense and prolonged PE can induce a higher abundance of pro-inflammatory bacteria; PA does not lead to significant GM α/β-diversity in elderly people (60+ years). The heterogeneity of the training parameters used in the studies, diet control, and different sequencing methods are the main confounders. Thus, this systematic review can provide an in-depth overview of the relationship between PA/PE and the human intestinal microbiota and, at the same time, provide indications from the athletic and health perspective.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

    Get PDF
The provision of tourism experiences depends on cooperative relationships of businesses operating not only in the same, but also in complementary industries, as it is the case of wine production industry. This paper then focuses on the occurrence, or not, of inter-sectoral and/or diagonal cooperation between businesses operating in wine and tourism industries. The aim is to understand and discuss the current situation of cooperation in the region and its (potential) adoption to the provision of tourism experiences. Data here presented was collected through interviewbased face-to-face questionnaire applied to businesses' decision makers, owners/managers. Results indicate cooperation is already being adopted by many of the owners/ managers of wine and tourism businesses in the region and that although visitor experiences were not clearly indicated by respondents as one of the reasons to cooperate, offering complementary and diversified products/services and activities is one of the main reasons for businesses, particularly for tourism businesses, to cooperate with wine businesses. It was acknowledged by respondents an increasing demand for wine-related activities (as participating in harvests and wine tasting) and the need to offer adequate products/services to meet wine-related demand expectations of tourists when vising the region. The results of this paper indicate that respondents, particularly tourism businesses, recognise that this offer is the result of cooperative relationships with wine businesses. Therefore, one can say that there is a great potential for cooperation between wine and tourism in the provision of tourism experiences in this region.8014-1B5A-933A | Goretti SilvaN/

Currently, facing the end of life and suffering seems to continue to be something difficult. Health professionals, namely nurses, should also provide holistic care at the end-of-life stage, thus avoiding suffering. Caring for an end-of-life person and family requires the active participation and competence of nurses, in order to meet their needs, emphasising the right to die with dignity and the right to receive good care, based on the imperative respect for life. This report arises within the scope of the Professional Internship of the Master's Degree in Palliative Care Nursing and seeks to describe the entire learning process and development of specialised skills critically and reflectively in this area of Nursing intervention. In order to develop competencies, we seek to gather as many experiences as possible and base clinical practice on scientific evidence, regarding the extents of providing care to the person and family in a palliative situation, training, management, and research. On that note, the Internship of Professional Nature took place in a Palliative Care Unit, in which emerged the research issue concerning the planning of the family conference in palliative care in the perception of health professionals. The relevance of this research study was due to the fact that family conferences in palliative care are extremely important to all participants in the disease process, since family conference planning is essentially aimed at providing care and support to the family. To this effect, considering the research objective, we opted for a scoping review, upon which the results showed that planning is essential for the implementation of Family Conferences, so as to allow the systematisation and process of information. Health professionals consider it essential to hold the family conference. From the internship experience, the development of competencies and specialized skills fundamental to the palliative patient and family’s care is highlighted. It has also allowed us to ascertain the preponderant role of the specialist nurse in professional training for the deepening of skills, in a lifelong learning constant, to reflect on the practices and on the importance of interaction with the multidisciplinary team and the family. We became aware that the need to offer the highest quality to the person at the end of life and the family emerges, for which palliative care is a more appropriate response

    Get PDF
The Kiwi, a fruit produced by Actinidia deliciosa, is a species that quickly became a success story in Portugal, both in terms of consumer interest and in terms of its production. Despite being a well adapted crop, kiwi plants are very sensitive to damage caused by hail and wind and, in recent years, have been very affected by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), bacteria responsible for the disease that most concerns producers. In Portugal, Psa was first identified in 2010, causing losses that can reach more than 80% of production, making research and the development of disease prevention essential. In terms of terms, the use of photo-selective nets in kiwi culture allows combining physical protection with the selection of bands in the spectrum of solar radiation to promote desired physiological responses that are regulated by light. Nets were used to protect plants against hail, wind, excessive solar radiation, pests and diseases, improving plant health and fruit quality. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the influence of photo-selective nets on the increase in Psa, on the productivity and quality of kiwi fruits. The test was carried out in a kiwi orchard of cv. Hayward, installed in 1988 in the farm “Quinta das Picas”, by the company KIWI GREENSUN, in Guimarães. The photo selective nets (Iridium ®, Agrintech) of pearl, yellow and gray color, had a shading effect of 7%, 4% and 19%, respectively, and were installed horizontally above the plants, in May 2019. A Psa severity was assessed on the leaves by a severity scale (Vanneste et al., 2013). The main effects of the networks were the decrease in active photosynthetic radiation (between 7.9% and 11.3%), decrease in wind speed, increase in the proportion of blue / red radiation, greater light diffusion effect, increase in temperature average air (between 0.3 ° C and 0.7 ° C) and decrease in the average daily relative humidity of the air (between 1.4% and 2.6%). The severity of Psa was lower in plants under nets compared to the control, due to climatic conditions that hindered the development and dispersion of bacteria. The plants under the pearl net compared to the control, have lower Psa severity, 33% increase in productivity and greater firmness and dry matter content of the fruits after 14 weeks of cold storage. Covering the kiwi orchard with the photo selective pearl net seems to have a beneficial impact on the progression of Psa disease, on production, on post-harvest quality of the fruits and storage capacity

This report was developed within the scope of the curricular unit of Supervised Teaching Practice of the Master in Pre-School and Primary School Education of the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. The report is divided into three parts. Biodiversity is essential for sustaining life on Earth, providing various ecosystem services. Pollinator animals are key living beings, responsible for the reproduction of angiosperm plants and have a fundamental role in food production. It is important that children, from an early age, have direct contact with animals from the local fauna, in order to establish positive relationships that promote pro-environmental behavior to protect the species. In this sense, a study was carried out with nineteen children in the 3rd year of schooling, which sought to provide answers to the following research questions: What are the knowledge and feelings of 3rd year students about animals that they can find at their school?; What ideas do 3rd year students have to make their school more “animal friendly”?; How is the participation of students in activities and constructions characterized? A didactic proposal consisting of six activities was elaborated that allowed students to collect, observe and identify animals outside the school, investigate ways to improve the life of pollinators, create insect-friendly constructions and observe interactions between insects and the materials produced. The methodology as a qualitative nature, using observation, interviews, student records, audio recordings and photography as data collection methods and techniques. After carrying out the activities, the students increased their knowledge about insects and pollination, showed greater empathy and interest in their preservation. They built an insect hotel, a pollinator garden and observed some animals in these spaces. The didactic proposal proved to motivate students at all learning moments
