Active learning strategies for an effective mathematics teaching and learning

    Get PDF
Learning is an active enterprise, where three dimensions stand out, cognitive, social, and physical, and, in addition, not all students learn in the same way. Grounded on these ideas, this article reports a study that aims to understand and characterize the performance of pre-service teachers when experiencing active learning strategies during their mathematics classes. The participants were 48 future teachers of primary education (3-12 years old) that experienced paper folding, a gallery walk, and a math trail as active learning strategies. We followed a qualitative methodology, collecting data though observations, written productions, and photographic records. The analysis involved a qualitative and inductive approach resorting to content analysis. The results of the study show that the participants valued these experiences, due to their potential in the development of a diversity of mathematical concepts and abilities, and throughout them showed traits of cognitive, social, and physical engagement. Active learning provided collaborative work and mathematical communication enabling the emergence of different strategies to solve the proposed tasks. The participants were able to reflect and be aware of their ideas, mistakes, and difficulties, as well as of others, in a non-threatening environment, where movement was highlighted for not being a popular dimension in mathematics classes. Although more research is needed, the results encourage the use of active learning strategies as a valuable approach to teaching and learning.0D1E-4824-1244 | Ana Cristina Coelho BarbosaN/

An overview of HTTPS and DNSSEC services adoption in higher education institutions in Brazil

    Get PDF
Cyberattacks are performed against all organizations including Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). When these attacks are successful, they can affect the regular operation of these institutions and may cause the leak of essential or sensitive data that can be misused or become inaccessible. Therefore, the adoption of current security services is important for devices and services exposed to the Internet that should run the latest and secure versions of web-related protocols and comply with the latest security-related guidelines and recommendations. This article surveys and analyzes the status of web-related security services, namely the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) and the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) services, in Brazilian HEIs. The results of this survey show that regarding HTTPS around 15% do not use any SSL / TLS certificate and of those supporting it, about 14% do not demand its usage. Regarding DNSSEC, the analysis shows that only around 2% of the HEIs are implementing this protocol. These results show that it is important to design an effective and continuous action plan for HEIs regarding the support or discontinuity of versions of these protocols, in order to improve their protection against cyberattacks.A41D-7428-BA6C | Jackson Barreto Costa Júniorinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Ramadan fasting period (RFP) means abstaining from consuming food and/or bever ages during certain hours of the day—from sunrise to sunset. Engaging in exercise and sports during the RFP leads to the lipolysis of adipose tissue and an increase in the breakdown of peripheral fat, leading to an increase in fat consumption. The effects of the RFP on functional, hematological, and metabolic parameters needs further study as existing studies have reported contradictory results. The differences in the results of various studies are due to the geographical characteristics of Muslim athletes, their specific diets, and their genetics, which explain these variations. In recent years, the attention of medical and sports researchers on the effects of the RFP and energy restrictions on bodily functions and athletic performance has increased significantly. Therefore, this brief article examines the effects of the RFP on the immune system, body composition, hematology, and the functionality of athletes during and after the RFP. We found that most sporting activities were performed during any time of the day without being affected by Ramadan fasting. Athletes were able to participate in their physical activities during fasting periods and saw few effects on their performance. Sleep and nutritional factors should be adjusted so that athletic performance is not impaired.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

The present document materializes, in a critical and reflective synthesis, the formative process carried out during the Professional Nature Internship, developed within the context of a Community Care Unit. With the aim of consolidating knowledge and acquiring skills to obtain a Master's degree in Nursing, with a specialization in Community Nursing, it integrates, using research-based practice, a study on the assessment of Pressure Ulcer risk in a community setting. One of the main risk factors contributing to the appearance of these lesions is related to limited mobility, which, in turn, is associated with the aging process of the individual. Considering the progressive aging of the global and national population, it is expected that the number of people with these types of lesions or at risk of developing them will continue to increase. To counter this scenario, the response to the problem involves the adoption of effective prevention measures. The intervention of Integrated Continuous Care Teams aims to promote the autonomy and functionality of the users. This study aimed to evaluate the evolution of pressure ulcer risk in users who were discharged from an Integrated Continuous Care Team of a Health Center Group in the Northern Coast of Portugal in the year 2021. The Braden Scale (Portugal, 2011), a scale recommended for healthcare in Portugal, was used to assess the risk. This was a quasi-experimental, quantitative approach study, with a non-random convenience sample of 45 users. The results showed a predominantly female and very aged population, with the age group above 80 years representing the majority of the study population. The Wilcoxon test for paired samples allowed us to conclude that the risk of developing pressure ulcers in users discharged from an Integrated Continuous Care Team of a Health Center Group in the Northern Coast of Portugal in the year 2021 decreased compared to the time of their admission

a cross-sectional study in youth soccer players

This study aimed to determine the relationships of locomotor profile (combination of a player’s maximal oxygen uptake and running economy)—measured by the final velocity attained at 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test (VIFT) and the anaerobic speed reserve (ASR)—with the body composition, countermovement jump (CMJ), sprinting performances, and change-of-direction (COD) ability of youth soccer players. A cross-sectional study design was implemented. A total of 124 youth soccer players from different age groups (15, 16, 17, 18, and 19 years old) were voluntarily recruited. ASR was determined based on the difference between maximal sprint speed (MSS) and VIFT. Players were tested for the following measures: (i) body composition (body mass and body fat percentage); (ii) CMJ (height of jump); (iii) sprinting time measured at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 m; (iv) MSS measured in the best split time (5 m) over the 30 m test; (v) COD ability (time, asymmetry index); and (vi) final velocity at 30-15 IFT (VIFT). A Pearson product-moment correlation test was used to examine the relationships. Height and body mass exhibited large correlations with VIFT (r = 0.835 and r = 0.699, respectively) and small correlations with ASR (r = 0.177 and r = 0.256, respectively). The CMJ was largely correlated with VIFT (r = 0.631 to r = 0.650) while presenting small correlations with ASR (r = 0.227 to r = 0.232). Both VIFT and ASR had moderate (r = 0.3 to r = 0.5) correlations with sprinting time at different distances and very large correlations with MSS (r = 0.797 to r = 0.866). The COD time was largely correlated with VIFT (r = 0.765 and r = 0.775) while exhibiting small-to-moderate correlations with ASR (r = −0.279 and r = −0.301). In conclusion, it was found that locomotor performance at 30-15 VIFT presents high levels of correlation with anthropometry and physical fitness; ASR also presents correlations with these variables, but they are smaller. This suggest that ASR is an independent variable that should be considered for inclusion in information for characterizing players’ capacities.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

Stroke is a condition of medical emergency, and in this sense the Stroke Code protocol was created, in order to ensure that people with signs and symptoms of stroke are given priority in their care. With this study, we intend to analyze the intervention of health professionals in the implementation of the stroke VV protocol in the Medical-Surgical Emergency Service (MSES). In order to respond to this objective, a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study was carried out in a MSES from a hospital in the north of Portugal. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with health professionals involved in the direct provision of care to people with VV of stroke and their observation was carried out. Data were analyzed using content analysis according to Laurence Bardin (2010) and descriptive statistical analysis. After analyzing the data obtained, the results emerged that demonstrate that health professionals know the interventions they have to perform and difficulties and suggestions for improvement in the implementation of the Stroke Code protocol were identified. Both in the hindering factors and in the suggestions for improvement, the Manchester Triage, the Radiology Service and the human and material resources stand out, intersecting in this way. We can also verify that in the observations made, these mostly comply with the times defined by the Guidelines of American Heart Association (AHA). Participants unanimously responded that the priority is to perform a neuroimaging exam. The Nursing Team experiences some difficulties in implementing the stroke VV protocol, reporting to the Manchester Triage. Suggestions for improvement included Team Training and Training, improved communication, optimization of human and material resources and a faster initial medical assessment. The results obtained in this study provide information for the development of critical thinking, with the aim of improving and perfecting health professionals in caring for people with Stroke Code protocol

The importance of STEAM education in pre- paring students to deal with societal challenges is nowa- days an international recommendation. We may find different perspectives concerning STEAM education and the integration of its disciplines. A possible pathway to achieve a balanced integration is through Engineering Design (ED), starting from problems of reality that enable the articulated mobilization of concepts from various dis- ciplinary areas, promoting interdisciplinary where team- work and context play a fundamental role. This article reports a study with primary preservice teachers (6–12 years old) that aims to analyze the learning displayed and the difficulties underlying the usage of ED in solving STEAM problems. The participants were 45 preservice teachers. We adopted a qualitative methodology, and data were collected through observation, documents, artifacts, and photos. The preliminary results show a very positive reaction of the participants to the experi- ence of solving real context problems collaboratively and mobilizing mathematical and physical science concepts in an integrated way. We identified active engagement, persistence, and motivation in the creation of a model that fulfilled the requested conditions. Difficulties were evidenced in the identification of some concepts and the mobilization of adequate scientific language in the argumentation of decisions.0D1E-4824-1244 | Ana Cristina Coelho Barbosainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Mathematical communication: the articulation between seeing, hearing and speaking

The impact of written feedback in geometry problem solving through a Gallery Walk

Traditionally, students experience difficulties solving problems involving geometric shapes and their properties. In line with the current curricular guidelines, it’s important to reflect about the use of active learning strategies, which directly engage students in meaningful mathematical activity, that contribute to reverse this situation. This paper refers to a study that aims to understand the influence of peer written feedback on students' performance in a Gallery Walk context, in the scope of problem solving involving areas of plane figures. We followed a qualitative, interpretative approach and collected data in a 5th grade class, with 19 students, through participant observation, a questionnaire, interviews, written productions and photographic records. Results show that, when the sender of feedback is a student, different types of feedback are used, however not all of them promote the improvement of the receiver’s performance. It was noticed that the most effective feedback is focused mainly on the emerging mathematical content, commenting on the student's performance in terms of task solution, process and results. It was also found that the feedback must be clear and simple so that the receiver clearly understands what the sender wants to convey.0D1E-4824-1244 | Ana Cristina Coelho Barbosainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
