    Algebraic thinking in visual contexts

    Esta comunicação pretende descrever um estudo centrado no desenvolvimento do pensamento algébrico em contextos visuais realizado com alunos do 6.º ano de escolaridade. Procurou-se compreender os aspetos do pensamento algébrico evidenciados em contextos visuais, as estratégias de generalização utilizadas pelos alunos e as suas dificuldades. Recorreu-se a um design de estudo de caso, sendo acompanhados dois alunos cujo trabalho foi enquadrado no contexto turma. Assim, foi elaborada uma proposta didática, organizada em contagens visuais, sequências de repetição e de crescimento, e problemas que envolvem a exploração de padrões. Apresentam-se alguns resultados, decorrentes da aplicação de três tarefas. De uma forma geral, os resultados evidenciaram que tarefas de exploração de padrões em contextos figurativos revelaram-se potenciadoras do desenvolvimento do pensamento algébrico nos três aspetos que o compõem: padrões e relações; generalização; e simbolização. Constatou-se, ainda, que tarefas desta natureza proporcionam a utilização de variadas estratégias de generalização.     Mobile math trails: an experience in teacher training with Mathcitymap

    Background: Studies show that the outdoors can be a privileged context to promote positive attitudes towards mathematics. Objectives: We aim to address the following questions: 1) Which pros and cons are pointed out by pre-service teachers of elementary education to the use of MathCityMap (MCM)? 2) How can we characterise the participants’ engagement in a math trail performed with MCM? Design: We followed a qualitative, interpretative methodology. The paradigm choice was because the main goal was to understand the perspective and reactions of the participants to a particular situation. Setting and Participants: The participants were 48 pre-service teachers of elementary education attending the first semester of the 3rd year of an undergraduate course at a public higher education institution in Portugal. Data collection and analysis: Data were collected during the classes of a unit course on Didactics of Mathematics. The pre-service teachers answered a questionnaire, followed by the implementation of a mobile math trail. At the end of this experience, the participants filled out another questionnaire. Participant observation and audio-visual records were also applied. Thus, the analysis involved a qualitative and inductive approach, resorting to content analysis. Results: The pre-service teachers were actively engaged during the math trail, showing interest in solving the tasks, using MCM, and focused on finishing the activity, evidencing persistence and will to be involved in the discussions. We also identified anxiety and frustration related to the outcome of a particular task. Strategies of different nature were used, mainly associated to the level of cognitive demand of the tasks. As pros, they considered the app intuitive, promoting autonomy, spatial orientation and collaborative work and highlighted as cons the inaccessibility to Wi-Fi, younger students’ not having smartphones/tablets, and the limitation of answer formats in task design.     The importance of seeing in mathematics communication

    This paper discusses the difficulties, reactions and conceptions of future teachers in relation to tasks that privilege different forms of communication in visual contexts. The tasks proposed focus on seeing the information directly or listening to the information without seeing. This research is of qualitative nature and was developed with forty-five future teachers of basic education. Data emerged from classroom observations, a questionnaire, written productions and photographic registers of students solving the tasks. The results show that students reacted positively to the proposed tasks, manifesting interest and motivation despite of some difficulties revealed in communication.     A 3D-printed continuously variable transmission for an electric vehicle prototype

    This paper aims to present the design of a new 3D-printed continuously variable transmission (CVT) developed for an electric vehicle prototype competing in Shell Eco-marathon electric battery category, a world-wide energy efficiency competition sponsored by Shell. The proposed system is composed of a polymeric conic geared friction wheel assembled in the motor axle and directly coupled to the rear tire of the vehicle. The conical shape allows to implement a continuous variation of the geared friction wheel diameter in contact with the tire. The motor with the geared friction wheel was mounted over a board with linear bearings, allowing the speed ratio to change by moving the board laterally. A computational simulation model of a prototype electric vehicle with the proposed 3D-printed CVT was created in Matlab/Simulink environment to obtain the traction force in the geared friction wheel and also to analyze the vehicle performance. The simulation results demonstrated possibilities of increasing vehicle speed range output and available torque in the rear traction wheel. Also, it is shown with the simulated model that the designed CVT consumes 10.46% less energy than a fixed transmission ratio, demonstrating the CVT concept’s potential for battery consumption reduction. Lastly, a 3D-printing slicing software with an optimization algorithm plug-in was used to determine the best printing parameters for the conic geared friction wheel based on the tangential force, maximum displacement and safety factor. When compared to the original part with a 100% infill density, the optimized solution reduced the component mass by about 12% while maintaining safe mechanical resistance and stiffness.2314-4B69-C2B9 | César Miguel de Almeida VasquesN/

    A criação musical no 2º ciclo com alunos do 5º ano

    Dissertação de Mestrado em Educação Artística apresentada na Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Viana do CasteloEste trabalho tem por base a criação musical desenvolvida em contexto de sala de aula da disciplina de Educação Musical no segundo ciclo, tendo o seu foco numa turma de 5º ano. A ideia surge enquadrada no conhecimento prévio da realidade, por parte da investigadora, enquanto docente de Educação Musical no Ensino Básico. Assim, tendo verificado ao longo dos anos uma predisposição mais ténue por parte dos alunos para a criação musical, comparativamente com aquela que demonstram para a interpretação musical, foi posto em prática um conjunto de atividades que permitiram ampliar o trabalho criativo. A nível metodológico seguiu-se o paradigma qualitativo levando a cabo um trabalho de investigação-ação cujas técnicas e instrumentos de recolha de dados estiveram assentes na observação, no diário de investigação, na captação de som e imagem e análise de conteúdo, desencadeando um processo de triangulação. As atividades desenvolvidas com o grupo participante foram diversificadas e tiveram como objetivo inicial verificar até que ponto os intervenientes estavam familiarizados com tarefas que envolvam criação musical. Posteriormente, foram concretizadas outras, destinadas especificamente à criação musical, trabalhando primordialmente elementos como timbre, ritmo e altura, por vezes com recursos tecnológicos. A diversidade de estratégias adotadas veio a demonstrar que a capacidade criativa dos participantes quando estimulada, pode potenciar a uma vivência musical mais produtiva. Da análise dos dados verificou-se também que, este grupo de alunos, consegue e gosta de desenvolver trabalho colaborativo e que tem especial apreço por atividades que apresentem algum fator surpresa, independentemente de incluírem ou não tecnologia.This work is based on the musical cration developed in the classroom context of the Music Education discipline in the second cycle, focusing on a 5th grade class. The idea arises from the researcher's previous knowledge of reality as a Music Education teacher in Basic Education. Thus, having verified over the years a weaker predisposition by students towards musical creation compared to that demonstrated for musical interpretation, a set of activities were put into practice that allowed for an expansion of creative work. Methodologically, a qualitative paradigm was followed through an action research project whose data collection techniques and instruments were based on observation, research diary, sound and image capture and content analysis, triggering a triangulation process. The activities developed with the participating group were diverse and initially aimed at verifying to what extent participants were familiar with tasks involving musical creation. Subsequently, other activities specifically designed for musical creation were carried out primarily working on elements such as timbre, rhythm and pitch sometimes using technological resources. The diversity of strategies adopted showed that when stimulated their creative capacity can lead to more productive music experiences. From data analysis it was also found that this group of students are capable of collaborative work and have special appreciation for activities presenting some surprise factor regardless of if they include technology or not

    According to the Quality Education and Gender Equality ambitions established at the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, we aimed to test the feasibility of a flexible planning and assessment process, using ongoing, bidirectional feedback between planning and assessment. Eighteen players (11.5 0.5 years of age) from a U13 female volleyball team were randomized into an experimental group (in which the plan could be changed daily) or a contrast group (pre-defined planning, adjusted monthly). The pedagogical intervention lasted three months. Besides ongoing daily assessments from the training practices, the Game Performance Assessment Instrument was adopted as a starting point for the weekly assessments in 4 vs. 4 game-forms (i.e., the instrument was modified monthly based on feedback from the training process). Information from daily and weekly formal assessment was used in the planning of the experimental group, and monthly in the contrast group. Data suggested that pre-established and strict planning (even updated monthly) failed to fit current learner needs. Over 12 weeks, the pre-established planning suffered regular modifications in the experimental group, and the assessment tool changed monthly.     Influence of cluster sets on mechanical and perceptual variables in adolescent athletes

    Cluster sets (CS) are effective in maintaining performance and reducing perceived effort compared to traditional sets (TRD). However, little is known about these effects on adolescent athletes. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of CS on the performance of mechanical and perceptual variables in young athletes. Eleven subjects [4 boys (age = 15.5 0.8 years; body mass = 54.3 7.0 kg; body height = 1.67 0.04 m; Back Squat 1RM/body mass: 1.62 0.19 kg; years from peak height velocity [PHV]: 0.94 0.50) and 7 girls (age = 17.2 1.4 years; body mass = 54.7 6.3kg; body height = 1.63 0.08 m; Back Squat 1RM/body mass: 1.22 0.16 kg; years from PHV: 3.33 1.00)] participated in a randomized crossover design with one traditional (TRD: 3 8, nointra-set and 225 s interest rest) and two clusters (CS1: 3 2 4, one 30 s intra-set and 180 sinter-set rest; and CS2: 3 4 2, three 30 s intra-set and 90 s inter-set rest) protocols. The subjects were assessed for a Back Squat 1RM for the first meet, then performed the three protocols on three different days, with at least 48 h between them. During experimental sessions, a back squat exercise was performed, and mean propulsive velocity (MPV), power (MPP), and force (MPF) were collected to analyze performance between protocols, together with measures of countermovement jump (CMJ) and perceptual responses through Rating of Perceived Exertion for each set (RPE-Set) and the overall session (S-RPE), and Muscle Soreness (DOMS). The results showed that velocity and power decline (MVDandMPD)werefavorablefor CS2(MVD: 5.61 14.84%;MPD: 5.63 14.91%) againstTRD (MVD: 21.10 11.88%;MPD: 20.98 11.85%)(p<0.01)andCS1(MVD: 21.44 12.13%;MPD:21.50 12.20%) (p < 0.05). For RPE-Set, the scores were smaller for CS2 (RPE8: 3.23 0.61; RPE16:4.32 1.42; RPE24: 4.46 1.51) compared to TRD (RPE8: 4.73 1.33; RPE16: 5.46 1.62; RPE24:6.23 1.97) (p = 0.008), as well as for Session RPE (CS2: 4.32 1.59; TRD: 5.68 1.75) (p = 0.015). There were no changes for jump height (CMJ: p = 0.985), and the difference between time points in CMJ ( CMJ: p = 0.213) and muscle soreness (DOMS: p = 0.437) were identified. Our findings suggest that using CS with a greater number of intra-set rests is more efficient even with the total rest interval equalized, presenting lower decreases in mechanical performance and lower perceptual effort responses.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

    How do companies communicate sustainability? a systematic literature review

    Sustainability is a topic that is increasingly discussed in society and organizations, leading many companies to adopt communication strategies focused on this theme. The objective of this article was to identify in the literature the ways, means, or tools that companies use to communicate sustainability. This article was based on a systematic review of the literature on the topic, resulting in a final sample of 18 articles from 14 different journals. Seven potential topics were identified in the systematic review: (i) communication strategies, (ii) the relationship between communication and consumer behavior, (iii) communication and health benefits, (iv) sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR), (v) sustainable business models, (vi) sustainability and process optimization, and (vii) sustainability and environmental impact. The results obtained allowed us to conclude that the strategies that companies can use to communicate sustainability are as follows: use new technologies (internet, social networks, websites, etc.), make value propositions based on consumer behaviors, disseminate clear and consistent information, and ensure broader work teams, among others. These results contribute to the advancement of scientific literature and to the definition and implementation of more efficient and effective public policies that facilitate communication between companies and consumers.
