Evaluation of ibuprofen use on the immune system indicators and force in disabled paralympic powerlifters of different sport levels

    Get PDF
Background: Paralympic powerlifting (PP) training is typically intense and causes fatigue and alterations in the immune system. Objective: To analyze whether IBU would affect performance and the immune system after training in PP. Methodology: 10 athletes at the national level (NL) and 10 at the regional level (RL) participated in the study, where force and blood indicators were evaluated after training. The study took place over three weeks: (1) familiarization and (2 and 3) comparison between recovery methods, with ibuprofen or placebo (IBU vs. PLA), 800 mg. In the evaluation of the force, the peak torque (PT), fatigue index (FI), and blood immune system biomarkers were analyzed. The training consisted of five sets of five repetitions with 80% of one maximum repetition (5 × 5, 80% 1RM) on the bench press. Results: The PT at the national level using IBU was higher than with PLA (p = 0.007, η2p = 0.347), and the FI in the NL was lower with IBU than with PLA (p = 0.002, η2p = 0.635), and when comparing the use of IBU, the NL showed less fatigue than the regional level (p = 0.004, η2p = 0.414). Leukocytes, with the use of IBU in the NL group, were greater than in the RL (p = 0.001, η2p = 0.329). Neutrophils, in the NL with IBU, were greater than in the RL with IBU and PLA (p = 0.025, η2p = 0.444). Lymphocytes, in NL with IBU were lower than in RL with IBU and PLA (p = 0.001, η2p = 0.491). Monocytes, in the NL with IBU and PLA, were lower than in the RL with IBU (p = 0.049, η2p = 0.344). For hemoglobin, hematocrit, and erythrocyte, the NL with IBU and PLA were higher than the RL with IBU and PLA (p < 0.05). Ammonia, with the use of IBU in the NL, obtained values higher than in the RL (p = 0.007), and with the use of PLA, the NL was higher than the RL (p = 0.038, η2p = 0.570). Conclusion: The training level tends to influence the immune system and, combined with the use of the IBU, it tends to improve recovery and the immune system.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

An analysis on the implementation of secure web-related protocols in portuguese city councils

The services supporting the websites, both public and private entities, may support security protocols such as HTTPS or DNSSEC. Public and private entities have a responsibility to ensure the security of their online platforms. Entities in the public domain such as city councils provide their services through their websites. However, each city council has its systems, configurations, and IT teams, and this means they have different standings regarding the security protocols supported. This paper analyzes the status of security protocols on Portuguese city council websites, specifically HTTPS and DNSSEC. The study evaluated 308 city council websites using a script developed for the research, and data was collected from the website of Direção Geral das Autarquias Locais (DGAL) on December 14, 2022, and the websites were scanned on December 22, 2022. The results of this assessment reveal that around 97% of city council websites use RSA as their encryption algorithm and around 84% use 2048-bit length keys for digital certificate signing. Furthermore, about 53% of the city council websites are still supporting outdated and potentially insecure SSL/TLS versions, and around 95% of the councils are not implementing DNSSEC in their domains. These results highlight potential areas for improvement in cybersecurity measures and can serve as a baseline to track progress toward improving cybersecurity maturity in Portuguese city councils.A41D-7428-BA6C | Jackson Barreto Costa JúniorN/

Attitudinal and behavioural differences towards farm animal welfare among consumers in the BRIC countries and the USA

This study explores cross-cultural differences in consumers’ attitudes toward farm animal welfare (FAW) in BRIC countries. Questionnaires administered in each country contained the following questions: (i) “It is important to me that animals used for food are well cared for”, (ii) “The typical nationality thinks it is important that animals used for food are well cared for”, (iii) “Low meat prices are more important than the well-being of animals used for food”, and (iv) “The typical nationality thinks that low meat prices are more important than the well-being of animals used for food”. Answers were given on a Likert scale (from total disagreement to total agreement). Data fit multinomial logistic models using “Country” and “Gender” as factors and “Age” as a covariate. The results showed that women had stronger pro-animal attitudes. Statements on the perception of FAW importance had an agreement tendency that increased with age, while the opposite was true for meat prices. Brazil showed the highest levels of individual pro-FAW attitudes, and the same trend in relation to meat prices. Russia showed a slightly lower pro-FAW attitude, but the perception of the compatriots’ attitudes towards FAW showed the opposite. Russians in general disagree with low meat prices in exchange for the detriment of FAW. Indians were the least supportive of FAW and, together with the Chinese, were the least supportive of an increase in meat prices to improve FAW. The Chinese showed prominent levels of neutrality towards FAW. These results may contribute to the definition of food and trade policies and help to adjust the supply chain to consumers’ socio-cultural and economic differences.0F1A-358B-43B5 | Fernando Jorge Ribeiro da MataN/

Profiling european consumers that engage in boycotting

    No full text
Boycott involves abstention from buying specific products or brands for political, ethical, or ecological reasons. Boycott is usually framed as an expression of political consumerism and has been on the rise. Companies that suffer a boycott may endure severe consequences including long-term damaged brand image and harmed reputation. However, there is still an incomplete picture of the socio-political and demographic profile of boycotters. Most characterizations of political consumers are based on research that combines boycotters and buycotters under a single construct of political consumers, and yet these consumers are driven by different motivations. The objective of this exploratory study is to provide a general characterization of European political consumers that engage in boycotting. The data used was collected between the 25th of May, 2022 and the18th of September, 2022, and was retrieved from the 10th edition (2022) of the European Social Survey. The study employs binary logistic regression to assess the association between boycotting and various potential factors listed in extant literature. Results indicate that boycotting behaviour is affected by age and other life-cycle variables, gender, education, institutional trust, the degree of satisfaction with the political system and the government, the level of trust in information and communication technology, reported self-happiness and self-general health perceptions. In general, the parameters of the models suggest that European consumers that engage in boycotting behaviour tend to be female, young, well-educated, trust on national political institutions and make intensive use of digital media. The conclusions of the empirical study are discussed and interpreted in light of current theories of consumer behaviour that highlight the post-modern, fragmented and globalized characteristics of current western societies. The results of this study enrich the literature on consumer boycotts and confirm the predicting power of various socio-demographic, psychological and attitudinal variables. Avenues for future research are identified together with consideration of the study limitations.0F1A-358B-43B5 | Fernando Jorge Ribeiro da Matainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The efficacy of neutraceuticals to alleviate dog osteoarthritis symptoms, a meta-analysis of case-control trials

    Get PDF
Osteoarthritis is a common condition in dogs. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are currently the most widely used treatment option; however, their chronic use is associated with numerous malefic side effects, including death. There has been increased interest in alternative treatments and nutraceuticals have assumed fundamental importance. A number of individual studies and systematic reviews have been done, but no meta-analysis has been produced to date. By conducting a meta-analysis, we aimed to fill this research gap. We combined the results of 13 case placebo controlled trials in a single major study, to determine the efficacy of nutraceuticals in alleviating symptoms of osteoarthritis. A population of 638 dogs was used, from which 327 were treated with nutraceuticals and 321 were used as controls. A successful random effects model was adjusted (P<0.001), with a risk ratio of 0.62 within a 95% CI of [0.47; 0.81], favouring the use of nutraceuticals. The nutraceuticals used in the trials were green-lipped mussel, chondroitin sulphate, an extract of India and Java turmeric (P54FP), a homeopathic combination preparation known as Zeel®, Ω-3 fatty acids, deep sea fish oil, a mix of glucosamine with chondroitin sulphate and hyaluronic acid, and cannabidiol.0F1A-358B-43B5 | Fernando Jorge Ribeiro da MataN/

Asas de fumo, Asas de poesia: para uma leitura da imagem em Maria Teresa Horta

    Get PDF

Vulnerabilities in baseboard management controllers: risks and mitigation strategies in the IIoT environment

    No full text
Vulnerabilities in Baseboard Management Controllers (BMCs) have a high impact on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environment. Recently, a set of vulnerabilities in BMCs disclosed by Nozomi Networks expose Operational Technology (OT) and IIoT networks to remote attacks. This paper reviews a set of vulnerabilities in BMC affecting IIoT devices and discusses the risks and implications of the vulnerabilities found, and how they can be mitigated. The discovery of vulnerabilities in BMC highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive and multifaceted approach to securing the IIoT environment. It is concluded that a general improvement in the security of BMC could be achieved by adopting the open-source philosophy and standardizing the hardware interface.A41D-7428-BA6C | Jackson Barreto Costa Júniorinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Prickly connections: sociodemographic factors shaping attitudes, perception and biological knowledge about the european hedgehog

    Get PDF
The modern lifestyle of humans is leading to a limited exposure to nature. While several wild species are adapting and thriving in anthropic environments, natural history knowledge is declining, and positive attitudes and behaviours towards nature are facing challenges. Because anticipating attitudes and engendering broad-based support for nature-related measures requires a good grasp of social contexts, we set out to evaluate the sociodemographic factors driving the perception, attitudes towards, and natural history knowledge of a keystone species—the European hedgehog. In 2022, we conducted a questionnaire answered by 324 Portuguese adults. We found generally positive feelings and attitudes towards this species. A higher degree of academic qualifications and previous personal experience with the species seem to play a role in (i) people’s perception about human impacts on hedgehogs and (ii) positive attitudes, especially during encounters where the animals were in difficulty. Despite this, the extent of natural history knowledge was low overall, and the study population was self-aware of this. Our insights underline the need to tailor educational programmes if we are to encourage people to re-establish meaningful connections with nature, to foster social support for biodiversity stewardship, and to implement the One Health approach in a way that resonates with distinct social groups.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/
