High levels of heavy metal(loid)s related to biliary hyperplasia in hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus)

    Get PDF
Heavy metal(loid) pollution of ecosystems is a current One Health problem. The liver is one of the most affected organs in cases of acute or chronic exposure to abnormal amounts of these substances, inducing histopathologic lesions. In order to assess the influence of heavy metal(loids), forty-five European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) were submitted to necropsy, and liver samples were collected for a routine histopathology exam and metal(loid)s determination (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu and Pb) by ICP-MS. Age was estimated during the necropsy exam. Biliary hyperplasia was the most frequent lesion observed (16/45; 35.56%). No statistically significant associations were found between biliary hyperplasia and age or sex. Metal(loid)s’ concentrations were higher in animals with biliary hyperplasia (except for As). There was a statistically significant difference for both Cd and Co. For As, Cd and Co, cubs and juveniles animals showed significantly lower concentrations than elder individuals. Only for Pb were significant differences found between females and males. As described in the literature, exposure to metal(loid)s may be a cause of biliary hyperplasia, although further research (including the use of biochemical methods) is needed to support these results. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of this association in hedgehogs.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/

Aging process is accompanied by a gradual and sustained loss of physical abilities which leads to a progressive muscle weakness with important consequences for daily living especially in women. This study aimed was to analyze the differences by ages in dynamic balance and lower limb strength in community-dwelling women, and secondly to assess the differences in dynamic balance scores and lower limb strength between fallers and non-fallers in community-dwelling women. A total of 1025 community dwelling women were recruited for the study. The sample were divided into six groups based on age: G1, from 60-65 yrs. (n=282); G2, from 66-70 yrs. (n=178); G3, from 71-75 yrs. (n=108); G4 from 76-80 yrs. (n=397); G5 from 81-85 yrs. (n=51) and G6, from 86-90 yrs. (n=9). The number of falls during the last year were also recorded. Significant differences were found in Sit to stand test (STS) and Timed up and go test (TUG) scores among age groups (p≤0.05). Additionally, poorer scores were found between fallers than non-fallers group (p≤0.05) both in STS and TUG test. Physical fitness performance decline as age group increase, and this decline is more striking after 70 years in community dwelling elderly women. In addition, faller elderly women show poorer scores in TUG and STS than non-fallers, reinforcing the idea that lower limb muscle strength and dynamic balance play an important role in falls in elderly women.4811-99FE-2ECD | Luis Paulo RodriguesN/

Life-cycle cost optimisation on a set of bridges

    No full text
This manuscript presents a life-cycle cost optimisation methodology for a set of roadway bridges, during a medium or a long period of time. The methodology analyses multiple scenarios and evaluates the performance and cost consequences of implementing different types of interventions, in different periods of time, for each bridge. The methodology takes into consideration the direct and indirect costs associated with different types of interventions, in addition with a degradation model to predict the deterioration along time. The optimisation is performed with a genetic algorithm to find the optimised intervention plan, over the desired analysis period. That process takes into consideration the life cycle cost minimization and the boundary constraints which could be fixed by the decision maker, either in terms of performance or cost. The methodology was tested on set of concrete Portuguese roadway bridges and the results of its application is presented. Attending to the nature of the problem, data’s uncertainty is considered and Monte Carlo simulation Method is used to present the results in a probabilistic manner. To better support the decision, a multi-objective optimisation is also presented. The gathered results are useful to minimize the associated high life-cycle costs of bridges and also to prepare an eventual extra-budget request argumentation. The methodology is then an approach to support decisions related to the scheduling of the necessary interventions on a set of bridges over time, ensuring the required performance level and taking the available budget into consideration.5A1D-90C1-54FE | Joana Maria Martins Rosa Maia de Oliveira AlmeidaN/

Several factors such as globalization and market saturation lead many companies to choose to internationalize in other countries. Additionally, entering foreign markets has become essential for large companies, not only due to the opportunities they present but also for improving internal and domestic strategies. Therefore, due to the growing demand for the international market, especially in emerging countries, combined with the lack of studies in the field, the importance of conducting a master's dissertation in the area of internationalization for the Chinese market emerged. Furthermore, the increasing demand for the Portuguese textile industry, due to its quality, led to the specification of the present topic to the Portuguese textile sector. As a result, the following research question arose: "What are the factors that determine the success of a Portuguese company in the textile sector in the Chinese market?" To address this problem, a literature review was conducted on internationalization, the specificities of the Chinese market, and the Portuguese textile sector in China. To analyze the topic and make its objectives more accurately, a qualitative method was used through exploratory semi-structured interviews with experienced individuals in the field in two separate studies. The first study involved Portuguese companies already present in the Chinese market, while the second study was focused on Portuguese companies planning to enter the market in the future. From the conclusions obtained after analyzing Study 1, it is highlighted that Portuguese companies present in the Chinese market are oriented towards the luxury market, already have extensive international experience prior to entering China, and have internationalized into the country through an agent. As for Study 2, the conclusions obtained after its analysis underline that these companies intend to enter the Chinese market through an agent and an innovative strategy that distinguishes them from others through quality, targeting a luxury niche marke

can a rapid local cooling intervention help young soccer players?

    Get PDF
The effects of a cooling strategy following repeated high-intensity running (RHIR) on soccer kicking performance in a hot environment (>30ºC) were investigated in youth soccer players. Fifteen academy under-17 players participated. In Experiment 1, players completed an all-out RHIR protocol (10×30 m, with 30s intervals). In Experiment 2 (cross-over design), participants performed this running protocol under two conditions: (1) following RHIR 5 minutes of cooling where ice packs were applied to the quadriceps/hamstrings, (2) a control condition involving passive resting. Perceptual measures [ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), pain and recovery], thigh temperature and kick-derived video three-dimensional kinematics (lower limb) and performance (ball speed and two-dimensional placement indices) were collected at baseline, post-exercise and intervention. In Experiment 1, RHIR led to small- to-large impairments (p < 0.03;d = −0.42–-1.83) across perceptual, kinematic and performance measures. In experiment 2, RPE (p < 0.01; Kendall’s W = 0.30) and mean radial error (p = 0.057; η2 = 0.234) increased only post-control. Significant small declines in ball speed were also observed post-control (p < 0.05; d = 0.35). Post-intervention foot centre-of-mass velocity was moderately faster in the cooling compared to control condition (p = 0.04; d = 0.60). In youth soccer players, a short cooling period was beneficial in counteracting declines in kicking performance, in particular ball placement, following intense running activity in the heat.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

This report is part of the Master's Degree in Sports Training, at the Higher School of Sports and Leisure, and concerns the annual internship to be carried out in the 2nd academic year. The curricular internship was carried out in the Gil Vicente Futebol Clube team, where I exercised the functions of trainee coach of the under-19 team, which competes in the First Division of the Junior National Championship in the north zone. This document aims to report the numerous experiences, lessons learned, difficulties and reflections in the area of monitoring training and physical preparation of young athletes, as well as knowing how to interpret the game of the head coach, why the training intensities are different on each day, how to prepare athletes in the best physical and tactical shape for the day of the match including their recovery, which came to my mind throughout the 2022/2023 sports season, as a trainee coach at the level sub-19 team of Gil Vicente Futebol Clube. The completion of this internship allowed me to consolidate the knowledge acquired throughout the academic course, as well as to experience its application and obtain new knowledge related to the modality of football. As a trainee coach during a sporting season, several tasks were carried out as an element of the technical team in order to help the team. Some of these tasks included helping with planning microcycles, preparing and setting up training and pre-competition exercises, monitoring daily gym training, preparing ice baths for better pre-game physical recovery and recording the game on competition day, in order to maximize the athletes' potential, that is, improve their current and future performance on and off the field. To do this, we carry out several tests repeatedly throughout the season in order to monitor the condition of each athlete and their evolution. Every week, countermovement jump tests (CMJ) were carried out on two different days, usually Monday and Friday, for each athlete with the help of the chronojump platform and the corresponding values were compared with previous tests. In addition to these physical tests, we also use a well-being report filled out by athletes every day before training, as well as a post-training assessment on the Borg scale regarding the level of demand of the training in question. During the internship there were several doubts and uncertainties, such as which tactical models to use and how to work with them weekly, how to approach and analyze each opponent, the best ways to approach athletes given their ages, how to do a weekly microcycle for training periodization on each specific day, tactical game analysis, how to accelerate recovery from pre-game fatigue

This systematic review analyzed the effects of recreational soccer programs on physical fitness and health-related outcomes in youth populations. Studies were sought in the following databases: (i) PubMed, (ii) Scopus, (iii) SPORTDiscus, and (iv) Web of Science. The eligibility criteria included (1) population: youth (<18 years old) populations with no restrictions on sex or health condition; (2) intervention: exposure to a recreational soccer training program of at least four weeks duration; (3) comparator: a passive or active control group not exposed to a recreational soccer training program; (4) outcomes: physical fitness (e.g., aerobic, strength, speed, and change-of direction) or health-related measures (e.g., body composition, blood pressure, heart rate variability, and biomarkers); (5) study design: a randomized parallel group design. The search was conducted on 6 September 2022 with no restrictions as to date or language. The risk of bias was assessed using the PEDro scale for randomized controlled studies. From a pool of 37,235 potentially relevant articles, 17 were eligible for inclusion in this review. Most of the experimental studies revealed the beneficial effects of recreational soccer for improving aerobic fitness and its benefits in terms of blood pressure and heart-rate markers. However, body composition was not significantly improved by recreational soccer. The main results revealed that recreational soccer training programs that are implemented twice a week could improve the generality of physical fitness parameters and beneficially impact cardiovascular health and biomarkers. Thus, recreational soccer meets the conditions for being included in the physical education curriculum as a good strategy for the benefit of the general health of children and young people.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/
