    Get PDF
In the face of global concerns regarding unhealthy lifestyles among youths, understanding dietary habits, physical activity, and weight management strategies among third-cycle students in Portugal becomes essential. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which middle school students adhere to the Mediterranean diet and assess their physical activity habits and overall weight perceptions. (2) Methods: This study is a cross-sectional observational study. Using self-reported data from a sample of 232 students aged between 12 and 18, this study delved into their dietary patterns, engagement in physical activities, perceptions of weight, and weight management approaches, measured by the KIDMED and YRB questionnaires. (3) The results demonstrated that adolescents engaged in a varied diet, and 65.5% had recently engaged in physical activity. However, 25% reported exercise-related injuries, suggesting potential safety gaps. Extreme weight management practices were minimal, but a disparity in weight perception and weight loss desire emerged, hinting at underlying societal and media influences. Gender differences in certain habits were minimal. (4) Conclusions: While students were generally inclined towards healthy habits, there are evident areas of concern, particularly regarding safety in physical activities and weight perceptions. In the future, interventions should be implemented to increase students’ literacy and raise awareness of the Mediterranean diet and physical well-being.C51A-9E8C-BFC2 | Andreia Limainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The nurturing of young players in youth academies is seen as an important step on the way to becoming a full professional in the sport of soccer. This longitudinal multi-study investigation, spanning 2009 to 2021, analysed the career paths of Spanish academy soccer players. It consisted of three studies investigating players’ transition from academy to professional status and the identification of technical skills and psychological traits which could distinguish future professionals from amateurs. The sample involved 198 male academy soccer players (aged 13.5–17.9) from two Madrid-based professional clubs. Study 1 assessed the outcomes of these players a decade after their academy-level evaluations. Studies 2 and 3 focused on the subgroup of 85 players whose playing status could be verified a decade later. Results showed that 12 players (6.1%) progressed to full-time professional soccer. Of these 12, just 7 reached Spain’s highest professional league within 10 years of their final academy tests. Significant differences favouring professional players were observed in the trait of ‘self-confidence’, ‘ball reception’, ‘dribbling forward with the ball’ and coaches’ global technical assessments. In conclusion, the chances of academy soccer players achieving professional status are low. Accordingly, providing more developmental opportunities before deselection is crucial to maximise player potential. Coaches could prioritise players’ self confidence and ball control to increase the conversion rate of academy players to professional status. Furthermore, recruitment of players who are already strong in these attributes could also improve the productivity of talent development pipelines.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

Women undergoing breast surgery with axillary lymph node dissection continue to experience complications in the ipsilateral upper limb, impacting their daily lives and quality of life. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between quality of life (overall and specific) and the functional capacity of patients undergoing breast surgery with lymph node clearance before and after implementing a rehabilitation program. This short-term quasi-experimental study included 48 women, and the design did not include control groups. Data collection involved a sociodemographic and clinical characterization questionnaire, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire, and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30 and Breast Cancer questionnaires. The study revealed a significant negative association between all general functional subscales and the functionality of the ipsilateral upper limb, except for emotional (p 0.941) and cognitive (p 0.927) functional scales. The functional capacity of the ipsilateral upper limb following surgery influences the quality of life of women undergoing breast surgery. The study concluded that monitoring the quality of life is essential to underscore the importance of providing access to rehabilitation to minimize or eliminate these changes, thus contributing to a better quality of life for these women.C51A-9E8C-BFC2 | Andreia Limainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The most recent history of surfing in Portugal has an association - Surf Clube de Viana - that has been a driving force behind this sport in several dimensions nationally and internationally. There’s a need to understand the structure behind success and to know the main Nature Sport - surfing - which is developed in this institution. Therefore, his work had its focus on the characterization of the club, through participation in various activities and reflecting on them. On the other hand, there was also a need to explore the inherent risk dimension of any nature sport through a study on the perception of risk associated with surfing. Regarding the investigation, it was used a survey in which participants were asked to answer the question: “As a surfer, indicate 10 risk factors that you consider relevant in the practice of this sport”. The sample brought together 23 surfers of different ages, levels and surfing experiences and even nationalities (Portuguese, Czech and Spanish). This way, it was possible to identify a risk perception balanced amongst the gattered propositions 50,40% of human risk factors and 49,60% od environmental risk factors. Th the most indicated risk factor was the “Environmental - Meteorological and Climatic”, due to the "current" proposition which was the most referred to in the whole study (13.60% of the total propositions). Thus, this work allowed to carry out learning that will be useful for professional life in this area of nature sports, on one hand, and exploring the perception of risk that exists in the surfing environment, on the other hand

Product design education often needs to update its pedagogical practice to include new strategies that facilitate the acquisition of scientific and technical skills valued by the job market. Polytechnic higher education, which is oriented towards practice and guided by the application and development of knowledge, is constantly challenged to create or optimize learning contexts that allow students to experience the demands of professional practice in a guided way. In order to verify the current state of academic practice in product design education, compared to professional practice, the authors aim to gather evidence that will help guide the optimization or implementation of new methodologies. In a first phase, a survey was conducted with product/ equipment/industrial designers working in the Portuguese job market. The data obtained through this instrument is complemented with interviews and non-participant observations of their professional practices. In the last phase, the results of this research will be academically tested, converted into one or more academic design project. In this article, the first results of the research will be presented. These results point to the multiplicity of approaches. The conclusion justifies that a review of the teaching and learning process in product design and the experimentation with new pedagogical strategies

Pine bark extracts are a rich source of natural polyphenols that besides their known antioxidant activity may also exhibit significant antimicrobial properties. In the current study, the antimicrobial activity of Pinus pinaster Aiton subsp. atlantica extracts was screened against gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Clostridium perfringens, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus), gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis) and the fungus Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC 16404, using the disk diffusion assay. The hydroethanolic extracts obtained by Microwave assisted extraction (MAE) at 1600 W and 110°C for 30 minutes, were compared to the Soxhlet extracts. The pine bark was dried to reach equilibrium humidity at 40 °C for 72 hours and milled to a particle's size of 200-850 μm. The extraction yield was determined by the amount of extract recovered in mass compared to the initial amount of dry bark and the total phenolic content was determined by the Folin Ciocalteu colorimetric method at 725 nm. Hydroethanolic pine bark extracts were prepared at 0.25, 0.50 and 80.00 mg/mL concentrations. MAE attained higher extraction yield and higher total phenolic content (20.4±0.7% w/w and 71.1±3.4 mg of gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per g of sample, respectively) than Soxhlet extracts (17.6±0.2% w/w and 54.9±2.6 mg GAE/g sample, respectively). The pine bark extracts presented inhibition halos ranging from 7 to 17 mm against the gram-positive bacteria, namely C. perfringens ATCC 13124 and B. cereus NCTC 11143. The MAE extracts presented higher inhibition halos than the Soxhlet ones. Regarding the tested concentrations, only C. perfringens ATCC 13124 and B. cereus NCTC 11143 were sensitive to the 0.25 and 0.50 mg/mL concentrations. At 80 mg/mL all the gram-positive bacteria were sensitive to the pine bark extracts obtained by both extraction methods. On the other hand, the extracts did not show inhibitory effect against the tested gram-negative bacteria and A. brasiliensis. This study reveals that MAE is a fast and efficient method for obtaining Pinus pinaster Aiton subsp. atlantica extracts with antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria.9619-4C7A-7614 | Diana Brito de BarrosN/
