    Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of our study was to examine the effect of 16 weeks of strength training on anthropometric characteristics and jump height in semi-professional male players after a pre-season period. Methods: A parallel two-group, longitudinal (pre, post) design was used with physical tests performed before (preintervention) and after (postintervention) the 16-week intervention period. The soccer players were assigned and matched into two groups, an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG), based on the team of which they were a part. Results: A two-way ANOVA was performed with group and time as factors. The results of a two-way ANOVA revealed no time×group interaction for body composition or jump height. Nevertheless, a paired measures t-test of weight, fat mass, lean mass, and countermovement jump (CMJ) test metrics (pre-post) and group (CG and EG) showed an improvement in all measures (p<0.01). Discussion: The 16-week intervention program resulted in an improvement in the EG both at the level of body composition and in CMJ performance. Conclusions: Despite the benefits of the 16-week intervention program, a combination of training methods that includes power, agility-coordination, speed, and strength can enhance such improvements. It is important to take this strength-specific capacity into account in training, due to the importance outlined in the sport of soccer both for its transfer to both linear and COD sprints and specific strength skills and mainly to vertical jump.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/

Seroprevalence study of brucellosis in wild boar hunted for private consumption in northeast Portugal

    Get PDF
Brucellosis is an important infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella. In the northeast region of Portugal, infection with Brucella melitensis is endemic in small ruminants, and there are also humans’ cases. However, the epidemiological role of the wild boar in the dynamics of this disease in this region is unknown. In this study, a total of 332 blood samples were collected from wild boar hunted in thirty-six hunting areas during the 2022/2023 hunting season. All were taken by the hunters for private consumption, with no evisceration or examination in the feld. Serum samples were tested by indirect ELISA (i-ELISA). It was observed that 88 wild boars were exposed to Brucella spp., pointing to a seroprevalence of 26.5% (95% CI: 21.8 – 31.3%). This high prevalence underlines the importance that wild boar may have in the dynamics of this disease in the region and its potential transmission to other animals, and to humans (for example, during the handling of carcasses). Increased awareness and knowledge of brucellosis in wild boar is essential for the implementation of efective practices and habits and, consequently, for the control and prevention of this important zoonosis.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra Mateusinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Smells like anthelmintic resistance—gastrointestinal prevalence, burden and diversity in dogs from Portugal

    Get PDF
Anthelmintic resistance has been documented worldwide, but few cases have been reported in dogs. Shelter dogs are a great opportunity to study intestinal helminths and assess their potential resistance to anthelmintic compounds. With these two goals in mind, 361 faecal samples were collected from dogs in 18 municipalities in Portugal, from 19 shelters and 11 private tutors. These samples were analysed using the Mini-FLOTAC before and 13 days after deworming. The percentage of faecal egg count reduction was calculated. Parasitic forms were identified in 22.4% of the samples collected: Trichuris vulpis (10.5%), Toxocara canis (8.0%), members of the family Ancylostomatidae (6.4%), Toxascaris leonina (0.8%), Dipylidium caninum (0.6%) and members of the family Taeniidae (0.3%). The first three nematode parasites showed the highest intensity of infection (2900, 1325, and 1265 eggs per gram, respectively). In the second faecal collection, parasites were present in 20.8% of the samples. The anthelmintics febendazole + pyrantel embonate + praziquantel and praziquantel + fenbendazole were ineffective for T. vulpis and members of the family Ancylostomatidae in 16.2% and 6.9% of the samples, respectively. The parasites identified are all potentially zoonotic. This study is the first to suggest a potential resistance of T. vulpis to anthelmintics.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/

    No full text
The technological revolution has contributed to the modernisation of work processes in general, and the public administration has progressed not only in its interaction processes with users but also in information sharing between institutions. Innovation in work processes aims to enhance data use efficiency and improve the effectiveness of connections between Public Administration and all users, whether they are Public Administration members or end users. This study examined tools capable of providing the resources necessary for decision-making, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using Information Technology, specifically increased efficiency and speed in information processing, reduced time to complete processes, improved communication between various public organisations departments, better coordination of diverse procedures, increased productivity, and improved effectiveness in achieving expected outcomes/goals. This research aimed to underscore the importance of digitalisation in inter-municipal entities, which we believe has been achieved through surveys conducted among administrative and financial area technicians of national inter-municipal entities regarding the use of Information Technology in a workplace context. The investigation followed procedures inherent to the research process, yielding relevant findings for this study on the significance of digitalisation in inter-municipal entities. These results were obtained by analysing questionnaires completed by 32 technicians working in the administrative and financial areas within mainland Portugal’s 23 inter-municipal entities. The results of this study reveal that information technologies are essential tools in the daily work of the respondents. However, regarding inter-municipal entities, there was an identified need for developing proficiency in using Information and Communication Technologies. Quality information sharing also depends on user proficiency within municipal services and on ensuring software interoperability

    No full text
Mountains matter. Rural subsistence communities living in areas with high biodiversity, such as mountains, are hotspots of ecological knowledge. However, modern lifestyles may threaten this unique cultural heritage. Our study aimed to document and analyze information on plants used to fulfill the everyday needs of the people in three rural communities in NW Portugal. Fieldwork was carried out for a period of one year and information was collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. A total of 98 species, belonging to 46 families, were identified, and 142 vernacular names were recorded. Ethnobotanical richness was similar among the studied communities. The five most frequently cited species were: Pterospartum tridentatum, Erica arborea, Ruta graveolens, Zea mays and Chamaemelum nobile. Phanerophytes and hemicryptophytes comprise nearly 81% of the list. The top three uses categories (total 14) were: medicine, fuel and ritual. Digestive, skin and respiratory symptoms were the most often conditions treated with plants. Medicinal plants were used fresh and dried, mostly as infusions. The insights gathered here are important for the preservation of the cultural heritage of the local communities. Moreover, the data are of considerable scientific interest because it provides the fundaments for future studies that aim to validate/invalidate specific uses.A91F-E8B8-FA62 | Teresa Susana Letra MateusN/
