This Internship Project, called “Geração Mais Saúde”, was carried out in partnership with Spot Health Club, with the main objective being to compare results between people who use a Health Club, twice a week, with all types of equipment and individualized Training Plans compared to a group of people, from a community in the District of Braga, Parish of Gondizalves, which does not benefit from any type of Gym or Health Club or other type of facility suitable for the practice of physical activity, nor exercise machines. physical exercise, only guided by a Teacher who provides them with Group Fitness classes, twice a week. As means of transport are scarce in the Gondizalves area, a project was designed to provide the population with a range of weekly activities that allow them to improve their physical condition, without having to travel from their parish. We then started by identifying people interested in participating in this 8-month project, both from the Parish of Gondizalves and the Spot Health Club. Ages ranged from 20 to 80 years old and the target audience were people interested in increasing their levels of Physical Activity and Exercise and improving their levels of psychological well-being. During this project, there were three moments of evaluation so that we could compare and understand the real impacts of its implementation. A first evaluation moment before the start of the project and the rest every 4 months. Initially, an anamnesis was carried out to stratify risk factors and adjust planning, in addition to physical fitness factors (Step Test; Shoulder Mobility Test; Push Up Test; Sit Up Test; Squat Test) and quality of life (Quality Questionnaire of Life of the World Health Organization – short version (WHOQOL-BREF). During the anamnesis, a Nutritional and Postural screening was also carried out with the support of the Spot Health Club technical team, following the guidelines of these professionals. Next, the implementation of questionnaires dedicated to the initial practice of Physical Activity, and Surveys on Mental Health. After the initial assessment, participants underwent a physical exercise and guided meditation program developed both at the Gondizalves Parish Council and at the Spot Health Club. The program developed at the Gondizalves Parish Council was based on group classes accompanied by a specialized professional, with the responsibility of programming, monitoring and evaluating the activities, while the other group developed its activity according to the practice of physical exercise in a context Gym according to your individualized training plan. Comparing the results, we finally know that, although both Groups under analysis obtained excellent results and made progress in terms of the development of Physical Activity, the Gondizalves Group, with guided Group Classes, was the one that stood out the most

Investigating associations between horse hoof conformation and presence of lameness

    Get PDF
Hoof trimming and shoeing determine the horse’s hoof shape and balance. Hoof conformation plays a crucial role in limb biomechanics and can consequently prevent or predispose to injury. This study investigated the relationship between the morphometric characteristics of the horse’s hoof, specifically, the dorsal hoof wall angle (DHWA), the coronet band circumference (CBC), and lameness in 73 horses categorised as undertaking either show jumping, dressage, or riding school activities. Results from logistic regression indicated that horses with either a combination of acute DHWA with large CBC, or more upright feet with larger DHWA and smaller CBC have higher probabilities of lameness. Show jumping and dressage horses showed a higher prevalence of lameness. Hoof morphometry should be monitored, and podiatric interventions should be regularly scheduled for the maintenance of correct hoof conformation to prevent injury. This study suggests that an aligned hoof–pastern axis managed by a DHWA of around 50 degrees may prevent lameness, with special emphasis on horses in dressage and show jumping activities. On the other hand, we can also speculate that the disturbed axis alignment of DHWA may be a cause of lameness.0F1A-358B-43B5 | Fernando Jorge Ribeiro da Matainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Hybrid building occupancy estimation using thermal imaging and environmental sensing

    Get PDF
Estimating building occupancy is a fundamental aspect of effective building management. By predicting building occupancy over time, we may reduce energy consumption, and contribute to energy efficiency in buildings. Building Occupancy Estimation (BOE) can be useful to compute building management metrics, such as the number of users in each room during work hours or in the entire building overnight. This paper presents a Hybrid Building Occupancy Estimation (HBOE) method that uses thermal imaging and environmental sensing to deliver a qualitative occupancy metric. Results show that the chosen approach represents a cost-effective solution, delivering an indicative BOE value based on thermal imaging and environmental sensing.EC18-399D-CF16 | ANTÓNIO MIGUEL RIBEIRO DOS SANTOS ROSADO DA CRUZN/

Introduction: Deglutition is a dynamic and complex process that plays a fundamental role in nutrition and airway protection, and when compromised, it has a biopsychosocial impact. In deglutition disorders, also known as dysphagia, there is impairment in the normal passage of food bolus at any phase and/or between phases of deglutition dynamics, which can be congenital or acquired, following neurological, mechanical, or psychogenic impairment. It has a high prevalence in institutionalized adults/elderly and is associated with neurological pathologies as well as pathologies localized in the head and neck. The rehabilitation specialist nurses possess the knowledge and skills necessary to intervene in this issue, as they are present throughout the hospitalization period, playing a crucial role in the early planning of discharge to return home. Objectives: Mapping the most current scientific evidence on the intervention of rehabilitation specialist nurses in adult patients with deglutition disorders, in a hospital setting. Specific objectives: Identify rehabilitation nursing interventions in adult patients with deglutition disorders, in a hospital setting; Describe the identified rehabilitation nursing interventions in adult patients with deglutition disorders, in a hospital setting. Method: A scoping review was conducted following the JBI methodology. As a review study, it adheres to eligibility criteria based on Population, Concept, and Context. A boolean phrase was formulated, and the search was conducted in the following databases: EBSCOhost, Cochrane Database, Scopus, Scielo, PubMed, RCAAP, and RENATES. Ten studies were included: four case studies, three quantitative studies, two systematic literature reviews, and one randomized controlled trial. Results: The analysis of the ten selected studies according to the criteria allowed us to identify a set of interventions by the rehabilitation specialist nurses in adult patients with deglutition disorders, in a hospital setting. The results highlighted that the evaluation of deglutition prior to oral food administration, diet modification, oral hygiene, psychological intervention, health education, as well as motor functional rehabilitation and respiratory functional rehabilitation, are fundamental for promoting functionality, independence, and quality of life in patients with deglutition disorders. On the other hand, it allowed us to verify that the intervention by the rehabilitation specialist nurses contributes to the reduction of associated complications, namely, reducing the risk of pneumonia and improved cost-effectiveness resulting from the reduction of hospitalization days. Conclusion: The role of the rehabilitation specialist nurses is fundamental in achieving health gains to the patient with deglutition disorders. However, there is a gap in exploring rehabilitation specialist nurses interventions in deglutition disorders, and it is essential to develop new research with larger samples to guide a more systematic practice

Enhancing storage stability of smoke-flavored horse mackerel filets using natural extracts as preservatives

    Get PDF
The Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) is a globally favored fish due to its abundance, nutritional value, and aordability, but it faces quality preservation challenges. To address this, this study aimed to enhance its value by creating low-salt smoked products with natural bioactive compounds from seafood and forest sources. The fish filets were divided into four groups: one as a control, and the others were treated with various bioactive extract solutions, specifically pine bark, mussels, and microalgae. After 15 days of storage at 4◦C, significant dierences in properties were observed. Moisture and salt had an inverse relationship, with decreasing moisture and pH over time. Oxidation levels remained acceptable, although sensory quality was aected by storage. Microbiological analysis uncovered high contamination levels in certain samples at specific points in time, although no pathogens such as Salmonella spp. or Listeria monocytogenes were detected. While microalgae extract was the most powerful antioxidant, its performance was hampered by the poor sensory scores. On the other hand, pine bark extract was the most acceptable from a sensory point of view and revealed some antimicrobial inhibition. Using natural antioxidants provides an appealing solution for consumers seeking products with clean labels.9814-6B05-9C03 | Ricardo Miguel Pereira Pintoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Higher education institutions’ students’ literacy in sustainable use of potable water

    Get PDF
Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a key role in fostering sustainability, since students will be future active society members. By providing them with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to address environmental challenges, they can contribute to increasing sustainability in a long-term approach. With the effects of climate change strongly affecting water availability across the planet, it is increasingly relevant to understand whether higher education students are aware of this situation, in order to develop adequate measures to promote sustainable behaviors regarding water use. This study aimed to assess students’ perceptions regarding water efficiency through a questionnaire submitted in seven HEIs in Portugal. Students acknowledged the importance of water, with older students, women and science students demonstrating a greater awareness. Despite this, 27% of students do not know what the average water consumption in Portugal is, and only 18% accurately reported the consumption range in Portugal. There is also a lack of knowledge (>50% students) regarding whether common water efficiency measures are applied in their HEI. The main information sources identified by the students were “social communication” and “internet/social media”, revealing that water efficiency knowledge transfer in high education can be improved.7211-5AB5-5A23 | Ivo AraujoN/

Integrating renewable energy produced by a library building on a university campus in a scenario of collective self-consumption

    Get PDF
Rising fossil fuel costs and environmental concerns are driving the search for new energy sources, particularly renewable energy. Among these sources, solar photovoltaic (PV) is the most promising in southern European countries, mainly through the use of decentralised PV systems designed to produce electricity close to the point of demand and primarily to meet local energy needs. In an urban scenario, a decentralised energy system usually operates in parallel with the grid, allowing excess power generated to be injected into the grid. Solar carports and rooftop systems are excellent examples of distributed photovoltaic systems, which are far more sustainable than large centralised systems because they do not compete for land use. Despite their operational advantages, these decentralised photovoltaic production plants, which are in most cases financed by specific energy efficiency programs, present challenges in a regulated market where the injection of energy into the electricity grid is restricted by law and support programs. The aim of this work is to integrate two different photovoltaic systems within an academic campus where the only PV source currently available is a solar car park, a solution designed both to provide shaded space for vehicles and to produce energy to be consumed within the facilities. Due to legal restrictions, surplus electricity cannot be sold to the national grid, and solar batteries to store the generated energy are expensive and have a short lifespan. Therefore, since the campus has two different grid connections and a 102.37 kWp PV system, the newly designed system to be installed on the library roof must be calculated to support the installed electricity system during the most critical working hours, determining the specific angle and orientation of the solar panels. On this basis, the energy management of a school campus is fundamental to creating a collective self-consumption system, the basis of a local energy community that can meet energy, environmental, and social objectives.7211-5AB5-5A23 | Ivo AraujoN/

    Get PDF
Background and objectives. In the literature, among the aspects that make up healthy ageing, mental health has been given special attention, as its alteration can contribute to a loss of independence and autonomy. Thus, mental health problems such as depression have been associated with years of life with greater disability. In this context, the older people are a vulnerable group due to their greater exposure to a number of factors (death of peers, limitations, among others). According to the literature, depressive symptoms are more prevalent in women, older adults with low levels of education, low incomes, who live alone and have weak social networks. At the same time, a negative association has been identified between greater functional capacity and depressive symptoms. In the European context, research (Conde-Sala et al., 2019) has concluded that older adults living in southern Europe are more likely to experience depressive symptoms than those living in northern Europe. This study therefore aims to analyze the relationship between functional capacity and depressive symptoms in older adults living in Portugal and Denmark. Method. This is a correlational, cross-sectional study of a quantitative nature. The sample consisted of elderly people aged 65+ living in Portugal (N=843) and Denmark (N=1764) who answered the SHARE survey (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) in wave 6. SPSS software, version 27, was used for quantitative analysis. Results. The results of this study show that there is a higher percentage of adults aged 65+ with significant depressive symptoms in Portugal (48.8%) than in Denmark (15.6%). In both countries, adults aged 65+ with significant depressive symptoms differ from their peers without significant depressive symptoms in terms of sociodemographic, economic and health characteristics. More specifically, significant depressive symptoms are more common among older people, females, those with low levels of education and those with greater difficulties in making ends meet. People with depressive symptoms, compared to their peers without depressive symptoms, live alone more often and also have a higher average number of chronic illnesses and a poorer selfperception of health. The main result of this research is that in both countries, limitations in instrumental activities of daily living and basic activities of daily living are related to depressive symptoms in Portugal and Denmark. Conclusion. The conclusions of this study, from a social gerontology perspective, point to the importance of the environment and maintaining functional capacity for healthy ageing
