Mestrado em Cibersegurança na Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão do Instituto Politécnico de Viana do CasteloAs the technological world continues to evolve, so does the type of infrastructures management a nation has, since they are more connected via computer systems. In doing so, if one wants to wage war against a nation, instead of starting by destroying its essential structures by deploying several resources, this can be done by a “simple” cyberattack of its infrastructures’ systems – which can be done remotely. These types of attacks can cause significant damage to a nation’s vital systems and be compared directly with the ones sustained by an actual kinetic attack. This dissertation will focus on the evolution of Cyberwarfare and its impact on society. Considering those are very modern and recent concerns, it is important to understand which laws and regulations on cyberwarfare and cybercrime exist in the international context.

According to the United Nations, around 74% of the European population lives in urban areas, a figure that is expected to reach 80% by 2050. This trend implies an ever-increasing population and environmental pressure in urban areas, intensified even more by the effects of climate change. However, the current context of reviewing the Municipal Urban Plans, and subsequently the remaining territorial management instruments, as well as the preparation of the climate action plan and other strategic documents of the municipality, present an opportunity to design more habitable, healthy, and resilient territories. This opportunity cannot be missed, the review processes for territorial management instruments are complex and long, much longer than would be desired. Climate change is a challenge that requires intensive responses at a global level and appropriate actions at a local one. To limit the impacts of climate change, it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, decarbonize society and adapt municipalities to predictable changes, to reduce the negative effects of climate change on ecosystems and the quality of life of their populations. It is within the scope of spatial planning that many of the decisions that impact the capacity of the territory and society to adapt to the effects of climate change can be taken, which has been identified as a fundamental means to adapt to climate change. The existence of different levels of exposure and territorial sensitivity to climate change means that, both in terms of vulnerability to the effects of climate change and the conditions to deal with these effects, it is necessary to consider appropriate adaptation measures for each territory. The spatial planning approach makes it possible to highlight the specific conditions of each territory and take them into due consideration when analysing the effects of climate change. Therefore, compatibility between the Municipal Plans for Spatial Planning and a high level of improvement and preservation of the environment and coping climate change is essential. The aim of this dissertation is to define measures to include climate action in territorial management instruments, making the territory more resilient to climate change issues, using Viana do Castelo as a case study. The methodology for carrying out this work underwent a bibliographical review relating to the topics in question: 1. What is territorial and spatial planning; 2. What are climate change and its impacts; 3. What is the legal framework for territorial planning and management instruments; 4. What is the legal framework regarding climate change; 5. Analyze which 3rd generation PDMs have incorporated measures in the context of climate change; 6. How these PDM’s did it; 7. Types of measures that the Municipal Climate Action Plans recommend for the different territorial planning and management instruments. The study concludes that it is important to develop an integrated action plan that incorporates the following into territorial planning: a) measures to mitigate the causes of climate change, focusing on reducing GHG emissions and increasing carbon sequestration capacity. b) measures to adapt to the effects and impacts of climate change on the territory, through the regulation of land use, influencing changes in activities and lifestyles. Municipal plans should begin to integrate policies and measures aimed at increasing environmental efficiency, by optimizing the use of primary natural resources - energy, water, soil and materials, whether from the point of view of adaptation, promoting the efficient use of limited resources and the minimization of risks associated with the impacts of climate change, or from the perspective of mitigation, as they contribute to the reduction of energy consumption and inherent decrease of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as to the maintenance and increase of sink capacity. This contribution will also comprise the establishment of rules and parameters for the licensing of urban procedures that encourage the adoption of water, energy, and material efficiency solutions, among others, in areas of territorial development or in the rehabilitation and restructuring of pre-existing buildings, ensuring the reuse, recovery and renewal of resources, in a cohesive process, considering the perspectives of both mitigation and adaptation to climate change

Experiências de surf diferenciadas : perceção de técnicos e atletas experientes

    Get PDF
In recent decades, surfing has become a global phenomenon at a sporting and tourist level, as the global popularity of surfing experiences has increased, surf tourism has sparked greater interest, both academic and economic, in the growth of the phenomenon, establishing itself as a market segment in exponential expansion. Surf tourism, through exposure to blue spaces, is related to active, coastal tourism and recreational activities that offer significant social, economic and environmental benefits and mental and physical well-being. Commercial surf tourism has led to the development of specialized companies and operators, put territories on the global map due to their geographic location and created employment opportunities, synergies and networking. Despite the benefits, conflicts and negative impacts are also recognized, such as increased local prices, precarious employment, inequalities in the distribution of wealth, or the production of garbage and solid waste, impacts on local flora and fauna due to trampling on dunes or invasion of bird nesting areas, among others. Thus, in response to the exponential growth of surf tourism and consequent social, economic and ecological impacts associated with the conventional model, several challenges and concerns arise, with the field of sustainable surf tourism emerging, with the aim of promoting it with a strategy sustainable development in surf destinations. Aligning the development of surf tourism with the preservation and sustainability of natural resources and local economies requires careful consideration of territorial management, social and economic impacts, protection of cultural heritage and environmental consequences. Structure destinations in relation to safety, environmental conservation and local communities, integrate the tourist phenomenon in accordance with the sporting culture of surfing, ancestral and proactive in nature in environmental and cultural conservation. In this context, experienced surfers and coaches who frequently travel to world-class surf destinations can contribute valuable information and identify best practices for surf tourism, allowing destinations to accommodate surfers' needs effectively. In competitive surfing, the roles of athletes and coaches are seamlessly intertwined, but remain distinct. Athletes face the immediate physical and mental challenges of the waves, while coaches offer strategic guidance and support from the shore. Meanwhile, organizers meticulously orchestrate travel logistics; Technical directors meticulously evaluate competition venues, infrastructure, associated services, security measures and information dissemination. Thus, based on the importance of gathering differentiated and specialized knowledge of skills and resources for sustainable alternatives in surf tourism, this study argues that the perceptions of these experienced athletes and coaches can go beyond the immediate sporting scope to the community and reach the broader domain of tourism, leveraging its specialized knowledge and experience to envision ways to minimize negative impacts while at the same time promoting more positive and sustainable surfing experiences for tourists, communities, operators and governments

Root-knot-nemátodes (RKN), Meloidogyne spp., are obligate parasites with high economic impact throughout the world and cause quantitative and qualitative damage to agricultural production, especially horticultural crops. As the tomato crop, Solanum lycopersicum, is one of the most important horticultural crops worldwide, where it is considered a universal host, susceptible to attack by this disease, with high potential yield losses, it is essential to develop measures to crop protection. RKN control is carried out using nematocides, which have been progressively restricted due to their high toxicity, in addition to being prohibited in organic agriculture. Thus, techniques and applications supported by scientific research have been developed, with an emphasis on the use of cultural practices and biocontrol agents. The success of the fungus Pochonia chlamydosporia in controlling RKN populations depends on a good establishment of the fungus in the soil and, above all, on the ability to colonize the rhizosphere of the crop to be protected. On the other hand, grafting is a practice used for many decades in various crops, and has generated promising and sustainable results in vegetable crops, through the use of tolerant/resistant rootstocks. This study aims to study the combination of biological control with nematophagous fungus and sustainable agricultural practices by grafting. The trial was carried out in a greenhouse contaminated with RKN on the NW Coast of Portugal, to test the combined application of both strategies. Tomato plants of cv. 'Coração de Boi', not grafted or grafted on the Embajador rootstock, were planted in non-inoculated soil or in plots inoculated with P. chlamydosporia chlamydospores (150 x 105/plant), in an experimental design with 4 treatments and 3 randomized blocks. The effects on fruit production and quality were evaluated. Yield increased significantly and fruit dry matter decreased in grafted plants (16.4 kg m-2, 5.0%) compared to non-grafted plants (13.4 kg m-2, 5.4%), but inoculation with the fungus did not influence any of these parameters. Fruit size was similar for all treatments, although the weight percentage of larger fruits (≥ 102 mm) seemed to be higher in grafted plants (31.3%) compared to nongrafted plants (19.7%). There were no significant differences between treatments for fruit firmness, acidity and pH. However, where fungus inoculation was not carried out, nongrafted plants produced sweeter fruits (4.9⁰ Brix) compared to all treatments, and, in the inoculated soil, non-grafted plants produced fruits with higher soluble solids contents, compared to grafted plants

    Get PDF
Recent research suggests that living nursing home may place restrictions on the expression and experience of sexuality and intimacy (Aguilar, 2017). Older people living in this context maintain sexual needs that remain unsatisfied, and the stereotypical view of older people as asexual beings predominates (Bauer et al., 2013). At the same time, professionals who work in nursing home recognize that issues related to sexuality and intimacy frequently emerge (Lester, et al., 2016), and most employees report situations related to the sexuality and intimacy of older people who care about them cause discomfort, recognizing a lack of skills in this domain. In this context, senior technicians who work at nursing home increasingly assume a fundamental role in the daily interaction they establish with elderly people, and, therefore, the way they perceive sexuality and intimacy in old age and the gerontological practice developed are fundamental to the validation or inhibition of the different ways of experiencing and expressing intimacy and sexuality among older people (Villar, et al., 2014). Assuming a developmental reading of intimacy and sexuality, the present study, of a qualitative nature, aims to understand the perspective of senior technicians who work at nursing home on the sexuality and intimacy of older people with whom they work. Twelve senior technicians were interviewed through a semi-structured interview, the content of which was analyzed using the content analysis procedure defined by Creswell (2013). Four domains emerged from the content analysis: (1) Background of sexuality and intimacy in old age, (2) Conceptions of sexuality and intimacy, (3) Experience of sexuality in nursing home, and (4) Gerontological practice in sexuality and intimacy in nursing home, which integrate several categories and subcategories. From the participants perspective, the experience and expression of sexuality and intimacy are part of the lives of older people who live in nursing home. These people express their sexuality through physical manifestations that do not necessarily imply sexual activity, and expressions of affection and emotional closeness towards other residents and employees. The lack of single rooms or double beds is identified as the main environmental barrier to the experience and expression of sexuality and intimacy. But the predominance of religious values and an asexual view of old age also contribute to limiting this experience. Furthermore, the participants recognize the imperative need to train nursing home human resources in this field, as well as the introduction of profound changes in nursing home management and organization policies. The results of this study reinforce the relevance of research on this topic, but also highlight the need to adapt the training of gerontologists to this level and the relevance of gerontological practice including a comprehensive view of the elderly, regardless of their life context

    Get PDF
A longevidade humana e o envelhecimento populacional representam a maior conquista do século XXI. Abstract Context and Objective. Longevity and population aging are widely regarded as the most significant accomplishments of the XXI century. Over the course of the past century, life expectancy at birth has increased by more than 30 years. As a result, it is crucial to ensure that these additional years gained are effectively utilized. The ongoing demographic transition presents a series of challenges and opportunities that demand innovative responses and the reconfiguration of traditional roles, such as that of the informal caregiver. Numerous OECD countries have implemented policy measures to support informal caregivers, recognizing the vital role they play in society, and Portugal is no exception. The Informal Caregiver Statute, released in 2019, governs the rights and obligations of both caregivers and care recipients, while establishing the necessary support measures. The Gerontologist, as a professional dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and wellbeing of aging individuals within family, community, and societal contexts, is a key resource in driving a paradigm shift surrounding the aging process. Accordingly, this study aims to explore the perspectives of gerontology students on the Informal Caregiver Statute. Method. This study adopts a qualitative and cross-sectional design, involving the participation of 37 students enrolled in the Gerontological Social Education undergraduate program and the Social Gerontology master's program at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews conducted within five focus groups. Three focus groups comprised undergraduate students, one representing each academic year, while the remaining two groups consisted of master's degree students, again, with one group representing each year. The collected data was subjected to content analysis. Results. The content analysis of the focus group discussions facilitated the identification of three overarching domains: (1) Policy measures in the Portuguese context of aging; (2) The status of informal caregivers; and (3) The status of informal caregivers within the framework of gerontology students' training. Each domain encompassed various categories and subcategories. Overall, the findings illuminated a multitude of perspectives and concerns pertaining to policies addressing aging, particularly as they relate to informal caregiving. Participants emphasized the significance of social recognition for caregivers, the need to optimize mechanisms for disseminating existing policies, and the importance of developing more comprehensive and effective measures to support both informal caregivers and those under their care. Conclusion. The results underline a pronounced commitment to the holistic support of individuals in order to foster humanized care for older adults and to drive a paradigm shift regarding the aging process. Consequently, the participants highlighted a keen awareness of the limitations associated with the Informal Caregiver Statute, as well as its role in safeguarding the wellbeing and dignity of informal caregivers and older individuals

The use of mobile technology in outdoor tourism : a systematic review

    No full text
Mobile technologies are evident in all sectors, and this is also a reality in tourism. Tourists are increasingly using their smartphones for different functions and purposes, from planning trips to browsing destinations. Mobile technology is also an ally in outdoor activities. Thus, this study sought to understand, through a systematic review, how mobile technologies are being approached in outdoor tourism literature. The analysis was conducted with twenty-four articles indexed in the Web of Science and published in the last five years (2018–2022). The first finding is the small number of specific articles on outdoor tourism, even when adding the terms nature-based or adventure tourism. The main reasons why outdoor tourists use mobile technology during their activities are communication, navigation, feeling safe, boredom relief, and taking photos Thus, there is a need for more research to better understand the benefits and risks of the use of mobile technology in outdoor activities and most of the analysed articles presented a quantitative approach.B913-0565-0908 | Elvira Vieirainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abstract: This study delves into how motivational sessions and brief interventions impact students’ alcohol consumption, highlighting the vital role of nurses in fostering positive behavioural changes. The study aims to discern the effects of these interventions, starting with a pre-and post-intervention setup involving 62 students from a private school in northern Portugal. The intervention comprised a session delivered by school and mental health nurses, utilizing the motivational intervention and FRAMES method and a poster offering feedback on alcohol consumption scores. The results indicated that females tended to drink for fewer days and engage in less binge drinking than males. Furthermore, the intervention hinted at a reduction in the number of heavy drinking days. This study underscores the importance of including healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, in delivering brief interventions within school settings. The findings carry weight for crafting evidence-based interventions to cultivate healthier adolescent behaviours and enhance overall well-being.C51A-9E8C-BFC2 | Andreia Limainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Is it possible to identify physical-motor profiles of preschool children on their association with selected biosocial factors?

Biosocial factors play a crucial role in the physical-motor development (PMD) of children during the preschool age. The present study aims to identify physical-motor profiles throughout preschool age (3–6 years) and explore associations between profiles and selected biosocial factors such as age, sex, prematurity, weight, height, BMI, and participation in extracurricular physical activities. Data from 412 typically developing children (46.6% girls and 53.4% boys), aged 35–71 months (M = 51.21, SD = 10.47) was collected using the Psychomotor Activities Checklist and specifically the scale of Psycho-Motor Aspects. Cluster analysis made it possible to define four different childhood PMD profiles. High PMD; High PMD except left laterality; medium-low PMD; and low PMD. High PMD profile includes older children, with anthropometric measurements closer to the WHO recommendations, fewer preterm children, and greater participation in extracurricular physical activities. Low PMD profile includes younger children, with weight slightly above and height slightly below the WHO recommendations and low participation in extracurricular physical activities. This study allows us to identify specific trends that may be decisive for the motor development of children throughout preschool age, highlighting selected biological variables and participation in extracurricular physical activities.1915-67BC-2519 | Linda Maria Saraivainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
